Although this is only my third book of Mr King I have read (after "Rose Madder" and "Dark Tower IV: Wizzard and Glass"), I am really impressed. First thing which made me addicted to King was movie "The Stand". If ever in my life I will go on American Highway 50 in Nevada around the Austin, I will be really afraid. I like the way the King reveals his characters. If in the beginning Collie Entragian seemed to be a cop who really cares about law, then after killing Mary's husband and after cop's meeting with Johny Marinville, I changed my mind. King knows how to build level of being scared step by step. From now on I will by every book written by Stephen King I see ! I really recommend everybody to READ IT !!! Thank u for attention.

Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot Mystery) - book cover picture

I feel this is one of Christie's very best, with both Hercule Poirot and Christie's mystery writer Ariadne Oliver adrift in a bizarre, unearthly setting. A perfect book to read as Halloween approaches, it has a truly bewitching feel to it, with a mysterious hanging garden constructed in a quarry as backdrop to the strange goings on. The characters, ranging from slightly odd children to menacing adults, add to the haunted feel of the book. In the midst of it all, Poirot's offended and suspicious air, and Oliver's battiness are quite amusing. Well worth the read. Come September, get yourself a copy of this, and of Tom Tryon's Harvest Home, and have a truly spooky, atmospheric autumn!

I have just recently begun to read Dean Koontz books, and was told that this book was the best. I borrowed it from my friend, and I was hooked on Dean Koontz books. What was most surprising to me was how Dean Koontz could get the reader so attached to the characters in the book, and how he was able to build up your suspense, while keeping you hooked on the book for such a long time. He will keep you guessing what will happen, but I found out that I was always wrong. The ability to come up with such surprising turns in the book is the real reason why Dean Koontz is such a great writer. This was an outstanding book and I would recommend it to anyone, even if you don't enjoy reading now, you will when you get through with this book.

Nothing "little" about Little Women

Little Women (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

While this book is often relegated to "girl's fiction", Little Women should be read by anyone interested in American literature and history. Little Women is based on Alcott's life at home with her sisters, mother and father, but is in no way a biography. She transforms personal disappointment and loss into a story of close family love, personal growth, moral duty and fulfillment. The writing is humorous, sentimental, a bit moralistic (which was the style at the time--the height of the religious revival in America.) The characters are true--because they were taken from Louisa's own sisters and parents. "Laurie" may be David Thoreau, a neighbor for whom Alcott may have had an unrequited love. This is one of my favorite novels. I loved it as a child and I love it still.

Bridget Jones's Diary - book cover picture

I enjoyed it because it is so funny and so true and could very well have been written 30 years ago when I struggled with issues of parental values and pressures, marriage as a status symbol, troubled relationships between the sexes, and constant, albeit unsuccessful, efforts at self-improvement. The only differences are technological. What a great comic portrayal of a single woman fighting the same universal struggles!

Where's the book? All this title had was incessant plugging for the home repair and other personal services of a canine quartet and their annelid friend. They tow, they mow, they fly, they tie. Yeah, right. And I've got some pet Seamonkeys to sell you. I try very hard to keep my precocious youngster from being exposed to advertising, only to have my efforts thwarted by books like these. The self-promoting shenanigans of these dogs make Hollywood's product placement efforts look tame. Also, whatever happened to self-reliance, and the notion that we should fix our own problems?

Flags of Our Fathers - book cover picture

This is probably one of the best books on WWII I have ever read. Bradley does an amazing job of discussing the tactical facts of the battle as well as bringing you close to the young men who fought and died on Iwo. One of the best parts of this book is the way Bradley covers the lives of the men who raised the flag flag from birth to death. Impossible to put down, and even harder not to break into tears when reading about the tragic end of the men who paid the ultimate price for our country.

Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero - book cover picture

Leigh Montville digs deep into the life of Ted Williams to discover what it takes to become the best. As we find out Williams' case, it was at the expense of his family and Montville gives an honest portrayal of a true baseball icon. Ted Williams was larger than life -- but he was still human and Monville isn't afraid to show the flaws. Williams was a complicated man for people to understand and mostly because he wasn't going to conform to what he was 'supposed to do'. This book is a must if you're a sports fan and even if you're not its good story of success against the odds.

Arco New York City Specialized Science High Schools Admissions Test (Serial) - book cover picture

ARCO's Specialized Science High Schools Admissions Test guide was a staple when I was preparing for the big test. It explained the exam format, gave test-taking strategies, and provided ten short sample quizzes. It gives a wide variety of sample questions, and explains why the right answer is correct. Using this resource, I made the Bronx Highschool of Science! If you are serious about the science high schools, the ARCO SSHSAT book is a must.
