The Wolf and the Dove - book cover picture

This is one of my all time favorite books. Kathleen Woodiwiss brought me back in time to this wonderful dark time. Oh all the hero's and fictional men I have read about. Wulfgar fit my minds image better than any other. I enjoyed the dialog between the two characters. I enjoyed Aislinn's courageous spirit. I always wanted to see this book made into a movie. Perhaps one day. I have the hardback version in my collection and I read it every other year just to reminisce. I won't give the story away though. You need to read it for yourself. I am proud to say, I met and married my own Wulfgar 12 years ago!

An excellent source of reference

Book title: The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition

The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition - book cover picture

This seventh edition of a Culinary Institute of America classic is an excellent reference guide and source of recipes for the serious chef/cook. Note I said "serious" because it is most definitely not intended for the beginning chef or cook. The recipes are written with the intent of providing large quantities of prepared foods and can be quite complex.
Ingredients may not be available in all areas and the "average" home kitchen will not have all the equipment necessary to produce some of the recipes. That said, the basics of the book including sections on nutrition and ingredients were a more interesting read than I had expected and I learned a great deal. The companion study guide helps to reinforce the information learned. Covering all facets of cooking from sauces to desserts The Professional Chef provides an amazing amount of information in one text.

Reads Like a Movie

Book title: Elixir

Elixir - book cover picture

After enjoying 'Gray Matter' by Gary Braver, I bought Elixir from before Christmas and started reading it only getting to the first chapter. After the dust settled from Christmas, New Years and Valentines Day, I finally opened Elixir yesterday (Feb 16) and read 300+ pages. And I finished it the next day. I should say that I am not a fast reader, nor have I ever read 300+ pages in a single sitting (with a few time outs to eat and take care of nature) - I just could not put it down. I wept at the climactic showdown at the end. Very moving. Outstanding! This book read like a movie. I hope it gets made, but can't imagine it will be as good as the book. Thrilling!

The Outsiders - book cover picture

Hey everyone. I first chose out this book because we had to read a "coming of age" novel and write a report on it. So I decided to read this one. I really like to read but I can't read unless I'm really interested in the book, and let me tell you, I was really interested! This book gave me outrageous mood swings of happiness, sadness, enjoyment, sympathy. I swear, there wasn't a second when I wasn't feeling something! If I am only 12, and in grade 7 and I can read it, I'm sure that everyone else can! S.E. Hinton has written a masterpiece and it should be all of our duties to read it! So please, get out there and read this amazing book! If you haven't read it already you don't know what you're missing.

The Maximum Impact with the Minimal Prose

Book title: The Stories of John Cheever
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Stories of John Cheever - book cover picture

The late John Cheever could not only tell a story well. He also could make each word count to ultimately paint a complex portrait of a certain type of person and his life, (less often her life). This was the upperclass, or marginal thereto, person who when in a city was in New York and when in the suburbs went by train to CT. Even more telling though was that Cheever's eye could see in a person's smallest gesture, or his passingest moment, everything you would ever need to know about him. Cheever exposed the underside of what was going on in life for this person. The world might seem sunny and simple when a Cheever story begins but by its end the world is rendered in all its complexity in the sparest of prose. I read Cheever's novels too but it was in his short stories that his genius as a writer shone forth best. Each story in this collection is stunning and well worth owning forever.

One of Roald Dahl's Most Enjoyable Books

The Witches (Puffin Novels) - book cover picture

"The Witches" is another "typical" Dahl book, though no two are ever alike. Filled with chase scenes, surprises and magical spells, children will be delighted with this suspenseful, wonderful story. What Dahl understands is that children like to be scared, and he does plenty of scaring in this little book. A great idea for grandparents to read to their grandchildren; the movie is also scary and fun.

I loved it!

Book title: The Wild Hunt

The Wild Hunt - book cover picture

This is a beautifully written, haunting book. The kind that you can't stop reading it when you start, and at the end, you start reading it again because you want to notice all the details you might have missed the first time through. Very original, perhaps a little short. Full of quiet wisdom and harsh conflict. It keeps you in suspense from the first chapter to the very end. And the ending is one of those that keeps you wondering about what happens after that, and leaves lots of room for imagination.

Till We Have Faces.

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold - book cover picture

For all C.S.Lewis fans this book is a 'must-read'. The story really draws you in and you feel you are really living in the harsh olden-times in which this book is set. The book finishes in typical C.S.Lewis fashion with a 'happy-ever-after' Christian theme. There is a strong Christian thread in the 2nd-half of the book, but it is more like an historical myth in the first half. There is a magic and a wonder about the story which shows Lewis at his best. The heroine of the book is made to see her motives for what they really were and herself as she really is, but everything works out well at the very end!

The Mermaid Chair: A Novel - book cover picture

Sue Monk Kidd has done it again. This is a beautifully crafted story about love, how it can inspire us, give us wings, and when it becomes muddled, actually suffocate us. SMK had given us more than one protagonist is this novel, and together they help us to realize we need each other, along with our spirituality to grow and survive.

Thank you Sue, for this wonderful gift, and sharing your talent with us once again!

Book title: Danger Along the Ohio

Danger Along the Ohio - book cover picture

Danger Along The Ohio by Patricia Wills'. This book takes place on the Ohio River in 1793. The main characters are Amos Clara and Jonathan. Their mother died after giving birth to Jonathan. Now all they have is a father. Amos, Clara, and Jonathan have a very playful pet cow.

In Danger Along The Ohio Amos Clara and Jonathan get separated from their dad during a heart stopping Indian attack! The problem is they can't find him. My favorite part is when they escape the Indian attack.

I recommend this book to a friend because it is packed with excitement and interest. I give it 5 stars because it is really exciting but it is a little slow at the beginning of the book. Patricia Wills' books are very interesting.
