Statistics for the Utterly Confused (Utterly Confused Series) - book cover picture

This is a terrific book for newbies or as a quick reference for those of us who occasionally dip into the world of statistics. Although it just covers the basics, nothing fancy, the concepts are clearly described along with instructions on how to set up the tests in Minitab and Excel. Especially helpful are the concepts boxes - one or two sentences that put the particular test or concept into context.

Excellent general text for those interested in youth crime

Book title: The Abandonment of Delinquent Behavior : Promoting the Turnaround
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Abandonment of Delinquent Behavior : Promoting the Turnaround - book cover picture

This text provides a great range of literature on issues surrounding youth justice, policy, resettlement and intervention. Students, practitioners and academics alike would all benefit from these chapters as would anyone with a general interest in this area, who would not find the book too 'dry' since the style of writing is excellent - clear, insightful and moving.
The book draws on personal accounts of young people's involvement in crime, their attitudes towards intervention efforts and reflections on why and how the abandonment of delinquent behaviour takes place. Concluding chapters are reflective and devoted to recommendations for policy and interventions based on the personal accounts presented earlier in the book. Each chapter is referenced well and the book benefits from a total of 22 contributors to the book, who all bring with them their own expertise to the area.

Go get it! Read it! Friday is the precursor of Aeon Flux!

Book title: Friday

Friday - book cover picture

I get *really* sick of women who say, "Gee, science fiction doesn't have enough strong women!" and when a book like Friday comes along, with a strong, strutting, active woman in it, they all retire to their Sunday punch and chew on Heinlein for "skewed sexuality." Friday is in the grand tradition of powerful female fictional characters dating from (at least) the middle ages--Nicolette, who defends a french city from the Saracens; Spenser's Britomart, the female knight; Howard's Red Sonja. Et cetera. Heinlein says more about human prejudice and incapability to see beyond social codes in this novel than he had since writing _Stranger in a Strange Land_

Talking to Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Paperback)) - book cover picture

This book was very good. You have to have read all of the other books in the series, but I would say that it is the best of all of them. It is about how Cimorene's son, Daystar had to discover how to save his father. The only thing is that nobody told him what he was supposed to do, so he and this girl he saves discover it on their own. I won't tell the end because you have got to read it yourself.

Starts slow, but then captivates

Book title: Empire Falls

Empire Falls - book cover picture

At first, I found Empire Falls a bit plodding, and not as laugh-out-loud funny as prior Russo reads like Straight Man. But about 75 pages in, I began to profoundly care about the Robys and to completely buy the story. It's basically a small-town, mid-life crisis tale, but Russo tells it so masterfully that this doens't feel like the same-old, same-old. That there is a Dickensian villian and a rather tidy ending seems appropriate, since this has been such a saga. It begins and ends on the river, at the Empire Falls, and this recovering English major bought it.

Fast Food Nation by Schlosser

Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (Harper Perennial P.S. Edition) - book cover picture

The author warns of the potential dangers in eating large
quantities of fast food preparations. He decries the numerous
ads that seek to capture children as life-long clients of the
junk food diet. The author is seeking to establish accountability
from food manufacturers and suppliers. He seeks to control
fast food consumption from fries to almost every imaginable
preparation by a wide constituency of food chains. He critiques
the dangers in eating red meat and the move toward irradiation
by the USDA. This book is an important work for consumers
of fast food and junk food. It provides a very ambitious
public agenda of awareness of junk foods and consumer strategies
to limit large quantities of these foods in the daily diet.
The author provides readers with the badly needed disclosure
of food preparation protocols and areas where improvement is
needed in order to protect children.

An absolute page-turner!

Book title: Billy Dead: A Novel

Billy Dead: A Novel - book cover picture

When Billy is found murdered in his small Michigan town, Ray Johnson, the victim's brother, goes on a search to find the killer. However, in order to do this, he must delve into the darkness of his long repressed past.

This book is a little dark, and may not be for everybody. It's full of abusive and dysfunctional relationships. Despite that, I really hope people give this book a chance. Lisa Reardon's writing style is effortless to read. Ray Johnson's narration is simple, yet evokes the feeling of that moment. The author also expertly weaves flashbacks and present time to create riveting suspense and an added depth to her characters. It's a whodunnit with a love story that defies all social boundaries. I guarantee that by thirty pages into the book, you won't be able to put it down.

You Know You Love Me: A Gossip Girl Novel - book cover picture

"You know you love me" a Gossip Girl novel in my opinion is one of the best young adult books I have read. When I read this book, everything seems so real. I can always put myself in the characters shoes. That's why I love to read this series. My life style is nothing like the ones im reading about so it is also fun to see what its like to have enormous amounts of money tied to your last name. At no point in time while I was reading this book did it ever get boring. I never had the urge to skip pages until something exciting happened. The intensity of the realistic situations in this book can keep you reading for hours and hours and no know it. This is one of those books that you can finish in a day if you really wanted to.

The C++ Standard Library : A Tutorial and Reference - book cover picture

Just one thing: Buy it! OK, OK, just two things: Buy it and read it! This is an excellent tutorial for any C++ programmer moving into the STL library. For more experienced programmers, it is a very handy reference and idea book for exploring the lesser used parts of the STL. If I could keep only two books I've purchased this year, this would be one of them (the other would be ATL Internals by Rector and Sells).
