Ranting Again - book cover picture

To call this book hilarious is equivalent to telling Alanis Morrisette that she needs to be just a bit more filled with rage. Few comedians can use intelligent banter with their monologues, without reverting back to f*** jokes. Even fewer can include those jokes and make it funny. For the latter, Miller is the Einstien of the art. I look forward to reading his rants with continual enthusiasm. I even find his adept use of metaphor rubbing off on me (to the point of claiming that '...to call the justice department a circus is to insult bearded ladies & trapeze artists everywhere') Both the first and second editions of his rants are brilliant commentaries on where we are and how we got here. If there is a complaint, it's that the books aren't long enough and there are only two of them.

Great Book! So glad I read it!

To Kill a Mockingbird - book cover picture

I was required to read this book over the summer for an Honors English class for next year. I finished it the week after school was out. It was so full of plot, and so intruiging, that I couldn't put it down. It was so incredible. I never imangined I would enjoy it so much. Harper Lee does a wonderful job setting the scene, especially with the dialect and character development. You see Scout Finch's world just as she would as the events unfold. This is one of the few times I am glad I was required to read a book. If not, I would have never known what lies beneath the cover.

A Day in the Life : The Music and Artistry of the Beatles - book cover picture

The best book ever written about the fab four. No sex, no drugs (well almost),only pure rock. Mark Hertsgaard is perhaps the first writer who has done justice to the lads' remarkable talent. From the initial Hamburg days to the London days of Please Please Me to the acid trip of Pepper to the grim reality of Let It Be, Hertsgaard gives a true analysis of the most imoportant aspect of the Beatles -- the music. If you have atleast one Beatle album (otherwise you would not be listening to music anyways, would you?) this is the book you must have for a better understanding of the works of the greatest musicians on this planet. What are you waiting for?

Burnham's Celestial Handbook: An Observer's Guide to the Universe Beyond the Solar System (Volume 1) - book cover picture

I was impressed with these books (set of 3 volumes) the very first time I saw them. The introduction in the first book brings a beginner up to speed on what is really happening 'out there'. For beginners and seasoned amateurs alike, it helps you to appreciate the objects in the universe, their sizes, the scale of the universe, and our place in it. They help a person to answer the question, "What do I look for?". The long introduction is both a fine tutorial, and a great review, to help one get and keep 'the big picture' in mind. The books inculde a massive amount of detailed information on objects in every constellation. They earn their own way to a place in my library.

Midnight Bayou - book cover picture

This book was great. I didn't think I was going to like it after reading the prologue. Once you begin this book clear your day and be ready to get sucked in. This book takes place in the bayou outside of New Orleans in a haunted mansion. The leading man, Declan, has given up a successful law practice in Boston and has re-located to the bayou to re-construct a mansion that he felt a pull from during his early college years. Then he is met by the sexy Angelina. You feel their fire for eachother as soon as the pages introduce their two characters. He is living in a haunted mansion and refuses to leave. This novel had romance, suspense, and drama. I really enjoyed this book, if your'e a Nora Roberts fan, you will not be let down. After reading this I know that it is a book that I will re-read in the future.

A Masterpiece in Women's Health

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition) - book cover picture

This revised and updated version of Toni Weschler's book is a true masterpiece in the field, and even more so than the original, is a book that all women should own. I have used fertility awareness for years as a successful method of birth control, and have no doubt that I will be able to use the very same method to maximize my odds of a quick pregnancy. But more importantly, and as the author stresses throughout, this is basic gynecological information that all women should know. That is it presented in a light, accessible and very well written style is just icing on the cake. Get this book for yourself, and then get another for your daughter or niece. I think this is an important book that will have a large impact in the field for many years to come.

Some people just don't like this kind of story..

The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time, Book 8) - book cover picture

From book one, WoT has been incredible. As stated in another reveiw, some people just want to see battles and blood and Tarmon Gai'don (SP). Even though PoD was signifigantly shorter and took longer than usual to come out (The first four books of WoT came out almost a year within each other and it may be safe to say that Shadow Rising was almost twice as long as PoD), it was still a great read. Jordan's writing has consistantly been excellent while some peoople just ignore that. If you don't like the series, then don't read it.

The Da Vinci Code - book cover picture

For books of fiction this was great! I started reading The Code thinking it was just another hyped book, and was surprised that I actually liked it. The main character is well developed and his relationship with the female character is simple, without a force of romance as was in "Angels and Demons". The story had a nice flow to it with plenty of murder and mayham thrown in, detailed enough to make it plausable. The story line alone makes this books content a great 'discussion' starter, as all the publicity surrounding it has proven. You won't be sorry you purchased this one!

Stealing Jesus : How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity - book cover picture

I thought I knew everything about fundamentalism, since I was a preacher's daughter, raised in a fundamentalist church. This book opened my eyes to fundamentalist history I had never known. I literally studied myself out of false Christianity by taking the Bible literally, as they taught me; I saw that my church was everything the Bible taught against. Bawer is astonishingly accurate, for someone who didn't grow up in fundamentalism. His analysis of the psychological attraction of religion that doesn't require thinking is absolutely correct, and the American religious history in the book has never been known, at least among Christians. People in mainstream churches think those of us who try to warn them about fundamentalist religion are just bitter; they underestimate the fundamentalist movement and the seduction it works on Christians who don't know the horrific mind-control it exerts on its disciples. Pass this book around your church; it opens eyes. Rev. Judy Romero-Oak, Taos, NM

This is a wonderfully written and organized text that students will hold on to and not sell after reading it!

The Last Dance : Encountering Death and Dying - book cover picture

I will be using The Last Dance for the third year in a course I teach on Death and Dying in Western Culture. This text does a marvelous job of addressing the socio-cultural aspects of death in America and the world. The chapter on suicide is both helpful and haunting. There are so many excellent illustrations and photographs in this book that it really comes alive for the students. It is clear that the authors are very familiar with their subject matter, and that they care very much about those who read this book. I cannot imagine a better general text on the subject of death and dying.
