Becoming a Physician : A Practical and Creative Guide to Planning a Career in Medicine - book cover picture

This is the only pre-med book that speaks to you as a real person, addresses all aspects of your life, and doesn't treat the application process like a big game. The message is that the best way to get into medical school is to be yourself, not to sell your soul. The info is the most useful and the most readable of any book that I have found. I recommend it to all my friends that are applying now.

Book title: The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night - book cover picture

A compassionate, kind book that is really about building a solid foundation for a lifetime relationship between you and your baby. While sleep problems loom large, they are over in a brief time, while the impact of how you respond to your baby lasts a lifetime. I found this book to provide many respectful solutions to a horrific, albiet temporary, problem. It does not assume that all babies and parents are alike, and it is easy to customize for your own family. It is very different from any other sleep book because of the focus on kindness and long-term results rather than short-term fixes. The author's website has inverviews with many parents who have used the book and gives many tips and book excerpts, so it's worth looking at, too.

Now this is romance!

Book title: Outlander
Rating: 5/5

Outlander - book cover picture

I have never given a review before. However, after reading Outlander and the rest of Diana Gabaldon's series; I just had to comment on how wonderful these books were. From what I understand, she is a fiction writer but has captured romance better than any romance writer's other works. The books are loaded with love, laughter, action; you name it, it's in there. It was a very emotional read. If there were Oscars for romance novel writing, here's your winner.

The most readable history of the Constitutional Convention

Book title: Decision in Philadelphia
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Decision in Philadelphia - book cover picture

The Collier brothers are an amazing act. Authors of the classic children's novel, "My Brother Sam is Dead," they also carry on careers individually as a history professor and writer on jazz respectively. "Decision in Philadelphia" is the story of the Constitutional Convention from start to finish. Told with novel-like drama and narrative flow, this is the first choice for any general reader who wants to know more about the issues driving our country's second national government (the first, the Articles of Confederation, had failed miserably). Very readable, and very interesting, "Decision in Philadelphia" is a book I have my own AP US History students read for its depth of knowledge and ease of reading (although I wouldn't recommend it for anybody lower than high school, unless exceptionally precocious and obsessed with history). All in all, one of the great popular histories available on any subject.

Vicki Croke does an absolutely fabulous job of completely sucking into the zoo world. She does not take away the mystery and awe that the zoos now provide for us. She gives us a seemingly unbiased factual look at how zoos were formed, how they are becoming better for animals and people alike, and what they are moving towards. Anyone who has ever been interested in visiting zoos really need to read this book because it will completely change your zoo perspective as it has mine. Thank You Vicki for such a great book!!

My First Alice Book

Book title: Alice in April
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Alice in April - book cover picture

"Alice in April" was the first Alice book I ever read, and encouraged me to read the rest of the series. This book takes place in the spring of Alice's seventh grade year, and deals with some more serious issues than some of the previous books. There is still a lot of the trademark Alice humor, especially between her and Lester. (You'll love their April Fool's pranks!) In "Alice in April" Alice is reminded (by Aunt Sally, of course) that she'll soon be Woman of the House, and have the responsibilities that go with that position. Alice takes her new role seriously: she has the ducts cleaned, suggests everyone go to the doctor (including herself) and throws a surprise birthday for her dad. This Alice book has some serious issues in it, but plenty of funny moments, too. I would highly reccomend this novel to any Alice fan.

Quirky, fun, and full of puns----

Book title: The Eyre Affair

The Eyre Affair - book cover picture

This was such a fun book. Just like a previous reviewer, I laughed out loud often. The puns are hilarious and I am sure I missed some. The more you have read, the more you get out of this,i.e the discussion about "Love's Labour Won"? How could you not chortle? However, it was not just a bunch of puns strung together. In fact, most were subtle. No, it had a plot with a beginning, a middle and an end. How nice. I have already bought book two, and am looking forword to delving into it.

Chopin: Pianist and Teacher : As Seen by his Pupils - book cover picture

When I went to university, I devoured almost all books on Chopin from the library. None was nearly as informative. Through his pupils, friends, associates, colleagues, you'll know exactly what the master was like when he played and taught, his stylistic requirements, his temperament and the magic he evoked.I just can't stress this enough - this is a must-buy! If you still have your doubts, get your hands on a copy and have a browse - what you can learn from it is priceless.

Book title: Jewels of the Sun (Irish Trilogy)

Jewels of the Sun (Irish Trilogy) - book cover picture

Nora Roberts, I can easily say, is my all time favorite author. This is the start of yet another Irish tritogy, and I almost didn't buy it. What a HUGE mistake that would have been! I don't know where she gets her inspiration, but every one of her books are wonderful. You know its a good one, when your six year old daughter catches you laughing out loud and all your doing is reading. Nora also has a wonderful sense of family in her books, since I'm from a very close family, that in itself keeps me coming back for more. It's truly one of those books where you'll laugh and cry. I can't wait for the next one in the series.
