Looking Out for #1 - book cover picture

This book was a revelation when I read it first many years ago - in the meantime I applied some of it to my life and some I did not. Looking at my life now I can see the areas where I did not stick to his advice is where I came unstuck and created problems for myself. Ringer is a master and his perspective on reality is the most useful advice I have heard in dealing with life. If you have the remotest interest in your personal freedom, waste no more time and get yourself a copy of this excellent book.

Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle - book cover picture

I have always been fascinated by Wall Street, and have always wondered what its really like behind the fancy suits and the crazy media articles. Monkey Business let me in, and showed me that it's not really different than anywhere else. The differences are that there is more money at stake, bigger egos, and maybe more stress, but other than that it is just like any other job. Thanks, guys, I'll stick with my day job.

The Sounds of Poetry : A Brief Guide - book cover picture

This is obviously not the first book to explore poetry from an angle other than the meaning of its words -- for another example, see John Ciardi's "How Does a Poem Mean?". Nonetheless, it's a very readable discussion of one of the things that distinguishes poetry from prose -- the importance of how it sounds, either spoken aloud or spoken in the reader's mind. I love to read poetry, and this book has given me a new layer of understanding -- both of poems themselves and of what I enjoy about them.

A Must Read for Fantasy Fanatics

A Clash of Kings - book cover picture

Both books are absolutely wonderful pieces of work. Great blend of plot and action, without a whole lot of phoney baloney magic. The lack of easily identifiable villains and heros makes this series even more enjoyable to read than Jordan and Goodkind. It is my greatest hope that Martin takes some cues from Feist and wraps this series up within the next 1 or 2 volumes. No fan of fantasy needs to pick up another unfinished 10 volume saga. Keep up the good work Mr. Martin!

Literature Guide: Out of the Dust (Grades 4-8) - book cover picture

This book was truly amazing. Not only does the story fascinate and engage the reader, but each poem stands on its own as a beautiful and honest pice of writing. This book is fabulous as young adult literature and would be an excellent resource for all teachers, especially those finding it diffuicult to transition between prose and poetry. This is not a difficult read, but it is a fresh and worthwhile one.

Harry Potter Schoolbooks Box Set: Two Classic Books from the Library of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - book cover picture

Have you ever wondered what types of books Harry Potter reads, for fun or for school? When JK Rowling was given a chance to write two of Harry Potter's books, she jumped to the chance. The books are very short, but tons of information is crammed into them. The first book, Quiddich Through the Ages is talking about the history of the magical sport, Quiddich.. (how it started, what it formed from, etc). It's actually very interesting. The second book, Magical Beasts And Where To Find Them is a list from A-Z of all the magical beasts in the world, (there are a lot of them). After a while the book gets a little boring, so JK Rowling, who probably realized this, added in Harry, Ron, and Hermione's little notes commenting on the words, ideas, names, etc.If you love Harry Potter, then this is a gr8 book for you.. Enjoy!!

An invaluable reference book for scholars and novices alike

Book title: Encyclopedia of American History : Seventh Edition

Encyclopedia of American History : Seventh Edition - book cover picture

This is a one volume comprehensive work of American history from American Exploration to the first term of the Clinton Adminstration. This book has been divided into three major categories: A Basic Chronology of American events and life, a Topical Chronology of specific events such as population trends, American expansion, government, and thought and culture. The last part of the book comprises short biographies of 450 notable Americans. I believe that Mr. Morris has strived to write this book in an easy to read and understandable format, while keeping with a comprehensive scope of American history. The book portrays to be an invaluable resource to teachers, history scholars, as well as the average person. Being a history major, I would not only recommend this book as a reference tool, but this work should be included on a "must have" list of books every home library should have. Mr. Morris has done a superb job with this 7th edition

"N is for Neville who died of ennui"

Book title: The Gashlycrumb Tinies

The Gashlycrumb Tinies - book cover picture

But you will not die of ennui if you open this book. It illustrates the misfortunes of 26 children with names A-Z to a ghoulishly humorous rhyme. The cover image of the umbrella wielding symbol of death and his doomed "tinies" is one of the most famous artwork out there; especially in the gothic world. Inside are drawings of the children before or after their sudden deaths. My favorite is "H is for Hector done in by a thug" with a drawing of an innocent schoolboy and two arms holding a long piece of cloth in the background. No doubt this scene was inspired by the barbaric cult that practiced ritual strangulation known as the "Thuggies." The most gruesome drawing is "K is for Kate who was struck with an axe" the rest are more witty than grisly. Like the title, this book is tiny in size as well but big on macabre humor!

C++ How to Program - book cover picture

I don't think anybody can find a better C++ book than the Deitels. Their step-by-step explanations of code help the beginner to understand how things work. Their examples also show what the language can do. I find myself boing back the Deitel book for reference now even though I am already in an advanced data structure class that deals with C++. I have also read their book on Java and it is also another wonderful textbook. If you want to be a great programmer, a Deitel textbook is all you need.
