Simply The Best Book Ever Written!

The Egg and I - book cover picture

Well, okay, that's subjective, but as one who has been a compulsive reader for nearly 50 years, and gone through literally thousands of books, I still feel that THE EGG AND I is, quite simply, the best book ever written by an American, or possibly by anyone! It's an autobiography that gives a great sense of its time and place; it's full of breathtakingly evocative images; it's warm and kind and friendly and, perhaps most importantly, sheer fall-off-your-chair-howling-with-laughte r funny. I've read it over and over, and whenever I know of someone who's down or has serious problems, I always send a copy of this book. There is just nothing else like it (though if you love this one, you'll also like MacDonald's other books).

Koontz does it again

Fear Nothing - book cover picture

Once again Dean Koontz has given us a well written, well thought, suspensful thriller. I have read every book Koontz has ever put out and he has yet to disappoint me. This book, like all of his books, contains just the right amount of supernatural elements along with believable characters with human limits.Christopher Snow is a man limited to darkness my a disease. Even things such as a flash light could be deadly in the long run to the books hero. Plot twists at every turn and a wonderful read.

A Simply Beautiful Story

Book title: Mr. Peabody's Apples
Rating: 5/5

Mr. Peabody's Apples - book cover picture

Mr. Peabody's Apples tells the story of a beloved teacher whose reputation is ruined by a rumor started when a young boy believes he sees the teacher steal an apple. When the truth comes out, the young boy feels terrible especially when he realizes how difficult it is to take back something once it's been said. Not only is Mr. Peabody's Apples a lesson in choosing one's words carefully but, as in Madonna's first children's book, a lesson in not judging other people because one may not have all the facts the person's situation. The story is easy to read with a sweetness that avoids being sappy. Madonna's no-nonsense storytelling is a delightful departure from the many patronizing stories out there that insult a child's intelligence. Madonna doesn't try to hide the lesson in the story but writes it clearly into the events of the story without sounding preachy.

Perfume : Complete and Unabridged - book cover picture

The reviews I have read would indicate that this is a book about the sense of smell, and specifically the smell of perfume. This is somewhat true, but at its heart, a traditional story about good v. evil, beauty v. ugliness, etc. What is unique is the sense of smell as a point of view or even the narrator. Very original! This is one of the most "poetic" or "lyrical" books I have ever read. It makes you feel, smell and visualize every scene. All this beauty in a book about a sad and evil man. Fascinating!!

The Lecturer's Tale - book cover picture

This disturbing and frightening novel could better serve the reader if it was twice as long; I could not get enough of it. I couldn't read it slowly enough because I wanted to get all the jokes and I couldn't read it quickly enough because the plot(s) took control of my fingers and moved the pages against my will. A campus novel and a Faustian replay is probably the last book most folks would want to read, but they'd be wrong as I could have been had I not been strangely drawn to the book at a friend's house. I opened at random and laughed out loud. She said she knew I would. And for a few hours and 388 pages I was lost to the rest of the world. Isn't that what we want out of a novel? Somewhere on this page there must be a button that for a modest consideration will send this book to your home. Put your finger on it and press it now. Fret not, I don't know the author from Adam.

Clarissa is you

Mrs. Dalloway (Penguin Audiobooks) - book cover picture

I first read Mrs. Dalloway in 1961. Over the years I have re-read this classic novel more than a dozen times, always with intense pleasure. After her first two less successful attempts at fiction writing, Virginia Woolf surpises us here with a masterful display of her genius. There is barely a story, or a plot here. Even characterization is minimal. Yet the powerful description of the tumult in a human soul during the course of a single day leaves the reader begging for more. Woolf unlike Marcel Proust did not attempt to resurrect the past. Unlike Joyce, she did not try to push tbe use of the stream of consciousnes technique to its limits. Her technique is her own. It allows her to give her readers insightful glimpses into Clarisa's joys and fears, her constant expectation of ecstasy and awareness of the abysses that surround her. It is a masterpiece that should be enjoyed at the right time and when you are in the right mood.

A different look of how men deal

Book title: Daddy
Rating: 5/5

Daddy - book cover picture

This book was the perfect example of what a man would have deal with when his wife leaves him with the kids instead of him leaving her. I was happy with the fact that DS made him work at it instead of having him say some meaningful things about the mother Sarah leaving and the kids accepting it and everything going smoothly we all know there are bound to be some troubles the perfect example is Ben the oldest son getting his girlfriend pregnant. I was REALLLY happy when the father Oliver got his second chance just like Sarah took hers I found myslef hating the mother for putting her children in that situation what kind of mother does that but on the other hand being a woman I understand her actions she wanted to know when was it going to be her turn? To live life without having to worry about kids and a husband or what to make to for dinner? I loved this book and I think everyone should read it.

Jane Eyre (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

I was shocked to see that many of the people who reveiwed this book gave it one star. It took me two days to read this book. I could'nt put it down! Jane is so down to earth and she refuses to feel sorry for herself, and do what she wanted to do the light of what others would suffer if she did. Her devoted love to Rochester was touching. When she discovered his sad secret, she did not follow her own fleshly desires, but left for the good of her lover, heartbroken, yet triuphant in knowing that she'd done what was right. Charlotte Bronte book is the best I've ever or ever will read. Those who rate this book 1 star need to reread it.:)

Best medieval history I've read

Book title: A World Lit Only by Fire : The Medieval Mind and the Renaissance - Portrait of an Age
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
A World Lit Only by Fire : The Medieval Mind and the Renaissance - Portrait of an Age - book cover picture

_A world lit only by fire_ is by no means supposed to be a friendly look at the Middle Ages. It's a history of the days between the fall of Rome and the beginning of the Age of Discovery, which led to the colonization of America and the foundation of the world as we know it today. It's gritty, compelling, sometimes funny in it's depiction, but it makes no excuses for the inhabitants of those centuries between the end of the Empire and the beginning of enlightenment. Those who say it was a horrid book probably haven't looked at it objectively at all and are taking their own biased opinions from Arthurian legend and what their college class tells them. Most compelling is the true story of Robin Hood...he isn't Erol Flynn OR Kevin Coster...he's more of a thief than a noble. Don't but don't let me tell you the whole tale, go get a book and add it to your collection. It's a must read for anyone with a remote interest in the Middle Ages

A warning to the open-minded

Book title: Hannibal

Hannibal - book cover picture

Even if you are a fan, as I am, of Harris' previous two books, recognize that this is a NEW book. Time has passed since SOTL; characters evolve (sometimes not in ways we think they should or would -- life is like that). And they have done so absent our scrutiny and consent.Harris has written a flawed book (damn, a bit like life again). It has some characters that are the equivalent in irritation to Jar-Jar Binks. It has an ending that will polarize his fans. But, this book is the real deal. Read it in one sitting, at most two. Start early in the evening. If you can, have someone nearby who can help you decompress. This book is disturbing -- not necessarily because it is gruesome, though it surely is, but because, in its dark caves and cloisters, it is uncannily like life.
