The Ultimate Fit or Fat - book cover picture

I am a high school health/nutrition teacher and included "The Ultimate Fit or Fat" on my optional reading list. (Each student has to read at least one book from the optional list.) Some of the students chose the fit or fat book, word got around about how much they liked it, and I would guess that at least 80% of the students ended up reading it. I'd see students with tape measures using the book's body fat test on all their friends. A couple of parents even called me to find out what kind of "magic" I had used on their kids because the kids were actually recommending that the parents read the book. This book is excellent. I'm going to make it REQUIRED reading from now on.

A Great Story

E=mc2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation - book cover picture

The book reveals the biography of E=mc2. As a biography, it starts with the origins of E, =, m, c, and 2. The story describes how these terms came together in a single equation and how the equation has affected human events. Through it all, the reader gains an understanding of the people involved--their successes, betrayals, and beheadings. Who knew that 'spin doctors' were practicing their craft as early as the 1600s? It is a great and very human story.

Brave New World - book cover picture

A very different look at an Orwellian nightmare, a very 1984-esque negative utopia, depsite the fact it was written some 12 years before 1984. John Savage's outlook an "Civilazation" is very true, that there should have been more emotion. No respect for the dead (death conditioning), no deep relationships, in fact, there's a promotion of promiscuity. Lenina is the perfect World State citizen, and is proud of her pneumatic way of life. Hoorah for John Savage and Bernard Marx!

The Great War and Modern Memory - book cover picture

Paul Fussell has created a significant study on the effects of World War I on the human consciousness and attitudes. This book is an especially useful tool for students of modern literature, as Fussell cites many instances in which the impact of the war was and, in some cases still is, reflected in the literature. Fussell's arguments include one explaining the modern distrust of language, especially abstract nouns. Central to this argument is Hemingway's famous quotation from A FAREWELL TO ARMS in which he states, "abstract words such as glory, honor, courage, or hallow were obscene beside the concrete names of villages, the numbers of roads, the names of rivers, the numbers of regiments, and the dates." Fussell explores the War's myriad of adverse effects and skillfully reports his conclusions on their effects on the modern state of being in this study which is an indispensable tool for those interested in modern studies.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) - book cover picture

Harry Potter fans don't need to read this, bcos #3 is at least as good as the first two, but there are some who don't yet know what all the fuss is about. I used to say that if I wanted to read childrens books I'd read Dr Seuss, never mind this Harry Potter crap, but boy was I wrong! Rowling is just, plain and simple, a great storyteller. An absolutely wonderful storyteller, in fact. If you can make it through the first three chapters of her first book, the Sorcerer's Stone, then you will be hooked, and that's the bottom line. Read them in order and don't start reading them if you're busy, bcos they are unputdownable. I have read the first three books, all in one sitting, more or less, and re-read the first two, again in a single sitting. These are now my all-time favorite books!

The Gospel According to Larry (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

I couldn't put this down. You follow Josh, a high school senior, as he begins assembling a website called The Gospel According to Larry, with "sermons" about pop culture, globalization, consumerism and everything under the sun. Meanwhile, he becomes a world wide sensation as everyone can't get enough of his inspiring posts. The only problem is that he posted it anonymously, and can't let anyone find out his true identity as Larry, not even his best friend, who he also happens to be in love with. I won't tell you how it ends. It's thought provoking, thrilling, new and different from other novels and with a wide range of emotions. I became attached to the characters, and was sad, happy and mad at them and their experiences. This book is a winner. Read it!

An intimate, painful, vivid story I won't soon forget.

Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha - book cover picture

I followed Patrick through his tumultuous doings, and felt, as he did, the subtle seismic shiftings and closing in of circumstances that took him out of the charming self-absorption of childhood, forcing him to ponder and try to fix what was going on with the adults in his life. From the freewheeling hooliganism of Paddy and his friends, to the narrowing of his world, to the deeply sad ending, this is an intimate, moving portrait of childhood. I was in tears as Paddy took on the role of 'ref' in his household, as he tried so hard to stay awake night after night. 'Loss of innocence' is an overworked phrase, but this book vividly details the loss of control, of predictability, stability and ease that make up the innocence of childhood.

Western Garden Book - book cover picture

This is my second copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book. The old copy is tattered and currently in my trunk. That way I am sure to have a reliable reference when I have the urge to purchase a plant. I have only come across one plant that wasn't listed. (Sunset, why did you dis the Dombeya?)
Lots of great photos and tips. It has everything from anatomy to xylem and zones.
It's not just a reference book but an education in gardening.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right - book cover picture

Absolutely the best book I've read in years.I couldn't put it down! Franken exposes the hate & hypocrisy of the rabid-right disinformation machine and manages to do so with biting humor and wit.Meticulously researched. If your politics lean to the Left you'll LOVE it! Should be required reading for right-wingers - it just might open their eyes (of course they'd have to open their minds a little first).
