Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues, Updated Edition With a New Preface - book cover picture

Dr. Farmer sums up what you can hear in his lectures (he is an amazing speaker), read in journals, and hear in his interviews: The "modern day plagues" result directly from Structural Violence. I read this book for my culture and health class and could not put it down. He writes with an eloquence unheard of in most anthropologists while at the same time with the passion of a deeply concerned physician. Although in some points the book can get repetitive (as case studies overlap) it is a spectacular, enlightening read that I would recommend to anyone, particularly potential (and current) medical anthropologists.

GREAT BOOK...odd ending

Little Children : A Novel - book cover picture

This book was one of the best books I have come accross in a long time. During my tour of great reading, I came across LIttle Children, being a new mother, I was intrigued. These parents, are all people I've seen or spoken with before, and the two main characters are so real that you feel like you know them. There are so many story lines and points of view that I was interested from start to finish. Typically I scan through pages, or chapters I find uninteresting, but not with this book! I stopped & reread chapters, something I NEVER DO! My only problem is the ending, it wrapped up a little too unbeleiveable with all the emotion going on in the book. Almost like he ran out of steam... But don't let that deter you from checking out this book, buy it, borrow it, or check it out at the library, either way it's a book any new or experienced parent should read. I'll be buying it that's for sure!

Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk - book cover picture

Marc Parent does a great job of telling the story of his years as a social worker. Every detail is real and touches home. Parent not only informs us, but inspires us. Even in the darkest of moments the reader can breathe a sigh of relief and continue. Parent gives us hope in a world full of unknowns and tragidies by showing that no matter what a person should do their best to make this world a better place to live. Parent uses great detail to make the reader feel like he/she is actually in the room with him in his daily activities. You can feel his pain, fear, and relief throughout the story. If I had to pick one book that changed my views it would be this one.

Stands The Test of Time

Heart of the Night - book cover picture

I had actually forgotten how much I enjoyed this book until I picked it up again last night in the bookstore. I think this is one of the books that not only made me a Delinsky fan, but a romance book fan as well. It is just really well done. And it holds up 15 years after it was first published!Delinsky is more a "women's fiction" writer than a "romance" writer these days -- which is a big loss to the romance genre. My only comfort is that every few years I can pick up one of her best romance titles -- in this case 'Heart of the Night" -- and have a few hours of blissful reading enjoyment once again with familiar but still enjoyable characters. And may I also add that if you liked this book, then you owe it to yourself to pick up Delinsky's "Through My Eyes." It's another title that stands the test of time.

An intrincate lacework of words and visions...

Neverwhere - book cover picture

This is one of the finest novels you'll ever read in the [dark] fantasy genre... although I feel I should not put it in that shelf only, for actually it is much more universal than that.I read this book (purposefully) during a trip to London, and fell in love with its accurate descriptions, its quirky references and its lyrical, haunting and also heartfelt prose. The story of Richard, Door, Jessica, Hunter and their friends is one of the best you'll ever come across... part epic, part gothic, part murder mystery, part tender love story and adventure... Neil Gaiman is a master of narrative and this book works as beautifully as his graphic stories.A must-read and a candidate for the "To Keep" shelf.

"It's not justice that matters, it's the innocents." Christie at her finest!!!

Ordeal by Innocence - book cover picture

I just finished this book recently and would recomend it to anyone. I think this is my favorite Christie so far. The ending was so unexpected. I loved the characters because they were all so well developed and each one of them was different. There's always at least one character you can relate to. In my case, my two favorite characters were Philip Durrant and Tina Argyle. A cool thing about this book is that, even though you never come face to face with Rachel Argyle (deceased before the opening of the book), you can see a clear picture of her in the background.
If you like Christie, mystery, or just good characters and a good story, go to the top of the screen and order this!

Unique and memorable

The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book) - book cover picture

The main characters in this novel, Claire and Henry, are separated by eight years in age and an odd chorno-displacement phenomena that affects Henry. The mechanics of this story are admirable, and it's one of the first things I liked about it. Later, the characters drew my full respect and sympathy into the story.

I've found some of the Today's Show books too dark for my taste, but the Time Traveler's Wife, although definitely not for kids was a very enjoyable read.

Eyes of the Hammer - book cover picture

Bob Mayer has created a unique series featuring a very real hero in Mr. Dave Riley. The story is well written, with tight descriptions and an active plot, plenty of nefarious villians, twists and turns and enough shoot-'em up action, crips dialog and a lot of heroics. Find this book as well as the rest of the series, they are worth reading. Great treat on a rainy afternoon. I hope HBO picks up the series and does something good with them.

The Piano in Chamber Ensemble: An Annotated Guide - book cover picture

Amazingly comprehensive text, with objective, intelligent reviews of most of the works listed, written by the author and/or those who heard the music first-hand. I didn't find a listing for the composer Kjerwulf, but I found listings for many others, including many I never heard of. Every piano piece of importance, and many others, are listed here, along with publication histories for most all works, and suggested bibliographies. You don't know how much piano music has been written until this book informs you of it. Very interesting biographical sketches are included of the most important composers.
