My 14 year old son and I each raced through the latest installment of Harry Potter's adventures this weekend. We both were transported once again into the complete universe created by auther J.K. Rowling. Yes, it was longer and darker than the previous books, but seldom has an author had such control of her story. The readers may not know where Rowling is headed but she has a clear vision, skillfully adding new and intriguing characters while deepening our knowledge and understanding of familiar ones. Harry and his friends are believable teenagers, too, dealing with the problems of young adolescents as well as magical challenges. We can't wait for volume 5!

Once again, Clancy does his homework and comes out with something that is technically believable, although I have to admit the plot is stretching the envelope of believability. I have but one bone to grind with Clancy, who made his mark by being technically accurate (yes - this is nit-picking). Re the Schloss sequence, infra-red goggles cannot see through closed windows. They will reflect the temperature of the glass, and a person behind the window will remain hidden, unless he presses himself against the glass. Sorry Tom, you messed up there. But that's the only fault I can find. Good job.

This is Robert Frank's best book. As is true of everything he writes, Frank's style here is clear and engaging. He aims to show that human emotions are created by natural selection to increase the individual's chances of survival. What appear to be a person's irrational reactions and inclinations often promote mutually beneficial trade and, thus, promote that person's long-run welfare. The explanation of how emotions achieve this remarkably beneficial outcome is the core of this fine book.Of all the many serious books that I've read over the years, this one is surely among the most fun! It's fantastic reading.

Borges: Collected Fictions - book cover picture

I have long stared covetously at the enormous volumes of Borges Collected Fiction that have adorned the bookshelves of the Spanish speakers I have met while I turned again and again to the slim volumes that had been available in English prior to this edition. The translation does seem a bit weak in points, however, the appearance of Borges in any form is cause for intense celebration. He is truly one of the greatest writers I've ever encountered. Along with Joyce, Musil and Gaddis he is among the most innovative and generous writers of this century. Giving him only Five Stars seems to somehow undermine his genius.

My all-time favorite book (before this one): "A Confederacy Of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. As a resident of New Orleans, LA for 21 years, I have revered John Kennedy Toole's work as a signpost for the future of literary genius. Walker Percy helped bring 'Confederacy' to the marketplace because he saw Toole's magical view of the world.

Most who revere '100 Years' will think me absurd, but there is a magical quality to 'Confederacy' which mirrors the yellow butterflies of '100 years'. Please consider these _so disparate works_ together. They are both ___GENIUS___. "100 Years" clearly out-writes "Confederacy", but they are DAMN CLOSE.

The Sopranos Family Cookbook: As Compiled by Artie Bucco - book cover picture

This book is one of those clever ideas that makes you want to say "Why didn't I think of that before?" There's no shortage of reference and pics from everybody's favorite HBO mob family, but the recipes in here are genuine, wonderful Italian food. But the best part? Somehow, the recipes in here make you look GOOD no matter how skilled a cook you are. I can tell you now that I'm in the less talented bracket to put it mildly, but the recipes in here have the virtue of being eye-catching and flavorful (incredible use of spices) while not being too difficult to put together. A rare combination. Definitely a book to grab whenever you can.

Gettysburg's Unknown Soldier: The Life, Death, and Celebrity of Amos Humiston - book cover picture

It was a time in history when folks back home held romantic images of gallant heroes for "The Cause". It is no wonder this powerful human interest story snowballed into a nation wide hunt for the children who's loving and courageous father died fighting to reclaim freedom of liberty for his country.Mark Dunkelman vividly paints a splendid picture of Amos Humiston and his family, taking us through a journey of their trails and tribulations. Mark Dunkelman's painstaking research comes togther with a marvelous, moving, and timeless human-interest story.

I am part of the younger audience (19) exposed to this book by David James Duncan, but I do not imagine that this book is limited to any age or audience. I have cried and laughed while reading this book, and there have been times when I did not want to go on, times when I could not stop reading. I recommed this book with all my heart. It has inspired me and moved me in a way that very few things in this world do. Give this book a "Chance", as well as his other novels.

Finnegans Wake (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) - book cover picture

This book is not to be read literally, rather it should be read aloud -- "sung" as if it were a piece of music. And like a piece of music, I find myself lazily following the words whilst occasionally getting a flash of images. One wonders how a musician, not of instrument or voice but of words, would interprete this piece.I know there are audio book versions available, but they're abridged. Besides, they're probably read as if the text were prose not poetry -- like a student reciting an historical document. I eagerly await the release of an unabridge version in the vein of the complete and unabridged Ring of the Nibelungs by Wagner (with James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera).

This book was very well written. Susan, supplied the novice point of view. Steve supplied the mentor point of view. Therefore, with this mixture, you get a book that's east to learn and gives you the knowledge that will help you in the longrun. I'm 13 and read this book in 3 days. It even supplies a free compiler so you can compile your very own programs that you learn to make with this book! What more could be asked for in a technical book? What else
