Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (Star Wars) - book cover picture

Good book. Not one of the more amazing stories to come out of the Star Wars storyline, but still good. It is set in between ESB and ROTJ. It is worth reading simply for the attention paid to Vader. It gives a good inside look into what he feels, thinks, wants, and goes well with the new prequels.

The Prince Xizor is a little weird, and not the type of bad-guy that I enjoy. I'm sure other people thought he was great, but I would rather Vader stay in the role of the bad guy. He was original though, and made for interesting reading.

The book was a fun read overall and highly recommended to Star Wars fans. All the main characters are there (except for Solo of course) along with some new ones including Dash Rendar, rogue and braggert.

Vonnegut at his Best

Book title: The Sirens of Titan

The Sirens of Titan - book cover picture

This is one of my all time favorite books. I first read this book when I was in high school. I so loved the work that I went on to read the rest of the books written by Vonnegut. Since then, I have become a voracious reader. It is all because of this book. It was perhaps the first book that taught me the joy of reading. Looking back on it now, I think of how it warned me of chasing my own sirens in life. If only then I had understood the book as I do now! Perhaps I could have avoided a wrong turn or two. In any event, this is really one of those books that everyone needs to read at least once.

Book title: Vineyard Seasons

Vineyard Seasons - book cover picture

This book made me feel so good that I wanted to move to Martha's Vineyard to experience Susan Branch's seasons and possibly be neighbors with her! I am no homemaker type, cooking is hard for me and normally I am cynical about these kinds of books. But what a happy surprise this book was. Great ideas for parties and the details of entertaining, not just how to make the food. I certainly love my copy - especially the section on Fall - made me feel all warm and halloween-ish!

Hyperion - book cover picture

Apart from the magnificent storytelling, the science fiction, the love story, and the 'down to earth' (as we say in Denmark) philosophy and poetic intensity and charm, reading Dan Simmons Epic is a must for everyone, who wants to understand European and especially American foreign policy. Who can ever say; I'm not a part of world history' after reading this saga?ps. And thanks to the author for introducing the works of John Keats to so many younger I-did'nt-know-him-before.

Tolkien's Enchanting Prelude

Book title: The Hobbit
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Hobbit - book cover picture

Tolkien orginally wrote the Hobbit for his children and it is lucky that we get to share in on this red blooded action adventure story. The Hobbit, being the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, is mostly the story of how Bilbo Baggins aquires the Ring of Power from the mistake of the murderous Gollum. But there is another "main" story. This book recounts the adventure of Bilbo, in the service of Gandalf and 13 dwarves, in which he must kill Smaug the dragon and steal back his hoard. Read this wonderful story, which is Tolkien's best work.

The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book) - book cover picture

Henry has a genetic flaw that causes him to time travel forwards or backwards 50 years in reaction to stress. In the future, people with this genetic flaw will be known as 'chronically displaced persons.' When Henry first appears in the clearing near Clare's home, she is 6 and he is 31. By the time they meet in real time, she is 20 and he is 28. She has a childhood full of memories of Henry, but he has not yet lived those moments.

The love between Henry and Clare cannot be contained in the boundaries of ordinary time, as they have always known each other. Yet, they will suffer some grief over Henry's inability to stay in the present. Each knows things about their future that have not happened yet.

This is a well-written book that will stay with you long after you have turned the last page, with characters that you grow to love.

Tuchmans Best -- but not for the weak-hearted

Book title: Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century

Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century - book cover picture

This book is dense, difficult, and full of references to people and events that you have never heard of. But for those reasons and the fact that it is thoroughly engaging, I cannot recommend it more strongly. It's my favorite Tuchman book and I've read them all. Do not approach it lightly. The organization is there although you are bound to get lost at times. Just remember, Tuchman knows where she's going, be patient and follow her. You won't regret the trip and you'll definitely learn something about mankind in the process.

One of the best in the Bosch series

Book title: Angels Flight (Detective Harry Bosch Mysteries)

Angels Flight (Detective Harry Bosch Mysteries) - book cover picture

Angels Flight was one of the best in Connely's Harry Bosch series. You can't put this book down! While the whole series up to this point has been excellent, I think this book is going to stand out for me, even after I read the last three, as one of the best (out of 9). This book just had the right combination of everything- suspense, murder, drama, intrigue, mystery, excitement and twists and turns. In this book Bosch seems to come up against everything possible: fellow officers & law officials, his wife and close friend, a city on the edge of rioting, more than one murder to solve and one of the most powerful families in LA. Anyone who knows Harry knows he's capable of fighting anything though and winning. And any fan of Connely's knows his writing is far above the rest.

Early Christian Doctrines - book cover picture

This is a marvelous treatment of a complicated subject, and I suspect few will be disappointed by Kelly's work. If you're reading this outside the academy or seminary, I would suggest a number of useful supplements: Cyril C. Richardson's "Early Christian Fathers" (ISBN 0684829517)an anthology of writings by Christian leaders primarily in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and Henry Chadwick's "The Early Church," (ISBN 0140231994) a very short treatment of the first five centuries of the Christian church, or W.H.C. Frend's longer, "The Rise of Christianity" (ISBN 0800619315).
