Shadow of a Dark Queen - book cover picture

In the Shadow of a Dark Queen is a thrilling book by Raymond E. Feist. In it a boy becomes a man, a old war is reinvestigated, and an evil older then time itself reappears. The book is suspenseful, and keeps readers on the end of their seats. I give it a five star rating. I thought that it was a wonderful example of sci-fi fantasy. It is comparable with Tolkiens Lord of the Rings. It delighted me and sort of made me feel like I was in the story. Feists books don't give a lot of character depth, but they are fun to read and make you want to be one of the characters. The storyline will not work if you do not read Magician 1&2, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon, Prince of the Blood, and The Kings Buccaneer. It is overall a wonderful book

Dr. Seuss's ABC (I Can Read It All By Myself Beginner Books) - book cover picture

My son is 27 months old with a severe speech delay and without any true words. I don't know what it is about this book but he loves it and is so verbal when we read it. It is his favorite out of many books. We read it twice almost every night. He screams with glee at the mere sight of it. He actually sounds out the letters as we turn to each new page. He points to the bubbles, doughnuts and neckties for counting even though he cannot count yet but likes when I do. He does "nice" on my hair when we get to the "mighty nice mice". He quacks like a duck for the Quaking Quacker-oo. He "roars" when he sees the Red Rhinoceros and Yellow Yak. Each page is excitement to him even though we have read it countless times. He also has the board book (which is slightly different) and I let him play with that one so as not to ruin this one. I highly recommend this book.

I thought this book was great! I loved the characters. You can picture what they are doing and where they are, all through out the book. From the moment I picked the book up, I could not put it back down. I read way into the morning hours. I couldn't wait to see what was to come next. The journeys seem absolutely lifelike. I can't wait to get the next book in the series "The Two Towers". I know it will be just as appealing.

One of my favorite short stories

The Lottery : And Other Stories - book cover picture

No suspense tale has ever impressed me as the Lottery did; I mean, what can be more innocent than a small town lottery? But then the author gives it a great twist when she turns it into a horrible, inhumane tradition. Just for the originality of the idea I give it two stars, and the other three are for being so well written, it's just chilling. By the way, I also saw the movie starring Keri Russell, which is OK, but of course, not even comparable to the quality of the actual tale.

My mother confiscated this book when I was 12 years old!

Katherine - book cover picture

Yes! I came across her old copy and started reading it. Apparently she thought some of the concepts were too "adult" for a 12 year old. All I could remember of the book was the first chapter, when Adela de Northwode tells Katherine she has eyes "like a rabbit's fur" and "near as large as a sheep's". When I came across the book again in my high school library, it became my constant companion and a refuge from the "terrible" teen years. I still have the copy I acquired then - now a very sad paperback indeed. If you enjoy historical romance, with more than a touch of authenticity, READ this book. For detail, it is way ahead of the competitors in this genre. Poor old Hugh Swynford - what a way to go!

Financial Peace: Restoring Financial Hope to You and Your Family - book cover picture

I sat down to read this book with some anxiety. Finances sometimes are very scary, not knowing where your next dollar comes from. Well, Mr. Ramsey has been through it all. I took some peace in that, but as I read the book I found it harder and harder to put it down. I finished it last night and am now excited to tackle my finances. Yes, there is a light at the end of the long dark tunnel of debt, Mr. Ramsey helped me to find it and then focus on it. Thank you!

A Modern Fantasy Classic

Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy) - book cover picture

Sabriel, by Garth Nix, grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go until the bitter end. I can easily say that this is above and beyond my favorite book. A well-developed, remarkably human Sabriel had me truly believing in the Charter Runes, just as Anee Rice had me checking my neck for twin scars and Tolkien had me searching for hobbit-holes. Nix is a writer of that top-notch caliber that makes the reader believe that this is a true story, that while Kerrigor may never have stormed Wyverly College, the Nine Gates are there, murky water swirling about, concealing nameless terrors. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, not just fantasy lovers. I have read it countless times, and it just keeps getting better.

Loved Alix's attempt at writing, can related to her insecurities and the needs to pick out a stupid excuse to distance yourself in order to keep from getting hurt. I loved the odd ball tenants in the flats that surround them. Sheesh...I just loved this book...what more can I say!!Thank you, Miss MacAlister. I am eagerly awaiting you other books!!

Great human account that cuts right through to the bone

News of a Kidnapping - book cover picture

I read this book in its original version in Spanish. We seldom see the human side of political violence stated in such a strong and harrowing way. It takes a great writer as Garc?a Marquez to make us feel more sympathy to the victims of that great cruelty and want to fight political violence by any means available. Besides making great reading, this books raises many ethical questions as regards our attitude toward politically oriented criminal behaviour. Here in South America, most people feel this kind of violence may befell others, not oneself. This book gives the reader a much deeper insight, and gives a new, more current meaning to the Holocaust and any other form of ideological violence
