The Seven Silly Eaters - book cover picture

This book is my family's favorite. Our first copy was paperback and was read so many times it started to fall apart. My husband loves reading it to the kids so much that I got HIM the hardback copy. It is pure fun to read out loud, and we all end up laughing no matter how many times we've heard it. We're now getting enough copies of it to give each child their own when they get older so they can share it with their kids (or just read it for the fun of it). We also gave a copy to our youngest child's class as a Christmas present. The idea for the book is wonderful. The pictures in this book are so detailed that you find something new each time you look at them. The story is a delight and the rhymes are amazing. This family (kids and adults alike) will cherish this book and the humor it delivers for the rest of our lives.

Striking Ghost Story

Book title: The Haunting
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Haunting - book cover picture

The novel is very different from other common cheap-thriller ghost stories that I have read before. There has never been any physical appearance of the ghosts in this novel. You read and feel the effects of the supernatural in the house, and Jackson has managed to delineate this with consummate skill and power that you will be spooked by it. Not like the usual grotesque bloody looks of the spectre. The manifestations in the house are subtly expressed too, as you see the gradual, subtle change in Eleanor Vance throughout the story. As Roald Dahl once wrote in his selection of best ghost stories, "The best ghost stories don't have ghosts in them. At least you don't see the ghost. Instead you see only the result of his actions. Occasionally you can feel it brushing past you, or you are made aware of its presence by subtle means." Hill House does just that.

Having Our Say : The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years - book cover picture

This was a really good book. These two sisters (Sarah and Bessie Delany) brought the history of the past back to us in a very interesting way. They didn't teach hatred but instead they taught forgiveness and they gave a great insight on how people our and how you just have to move past that. They taught how without the essence of God they wouldn't have made it through and that's true. I admire these sisters because they stick together and they remind me of the love I have for my cousin. Although old fashioned they were up to date.

Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything - book cover picture

I personally love this book. The way the author looks at certain topics is funny and interesting all at the same time. I have taken a few years of Economics in college and actually became quite bored with it. However after reading his take on things, it offers a whole different way of looking at things. I also really enjoyed the part on real estate agents. In ecomomics it is grilled in your head that incentives matter. Well, I always looked at it from my point of view as a consumer and the positive side. I really would never have thought about it the way he did. Very highly recommended.

Magician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga) - book cover picture

Magician: Apprentice as well as Magician: Master are both excellent books. The author cleverly begins out superficially and eventually draws you deep within Medkemia into the exciting climax. The excellent description of the characters in exquisite detail renders the reader speechless and very emotional. Circling around the lives of two boys, Pug and Tomas, the story ingeniously draws you into the world of Medkemia and Kelewan as the foreshadowing of the climax eventually proves only to make the book even better.

A step by step guide to becoming a mega-agent

Book title: The Millionaire Real Estate Agent

The Millionaire Real Estate Agent - book cover picture

This book clearly details Gary Keller's study of the top real estate mega-agents in the US. Written in a style that is easy to read, understand and follow this book is actually a "how to manual" for achieving over $1 million dollars a year of NET income by selling residential real estate in any market. MREA reveals the basic model for generating leads and leveraging a team (staff) to achieve a production most real estate agents do not even realize is possible. Unlike most real estate trainers and speakers this book does try to sell any other products or services.

Emotional, Powerful, Epic, Amazing

Sister Carrie (Oxford World's Classics) - book cover picture

In my opinion, there is no american author (with the exception of Steinbeck) who can create such powerfully moving stories like Theodore Dreiser. In Sister Carrie, Dreiser tells the tale of a girl who is disenchanted with her small town life, so she moves to Chicago in search of bigger and better things. The story is an amazing portrayal of a woman's life at the beginning of the twentieth century. Dreiser, through his characters, shows the difficulty of living as a single female trying to earn a living as well as maintain relationships. Throughout the book there seems to be a rather dark, somber mood, as if there is always an internal struggle and the dire need to improve one's life, but never achieving the goal. The romance, heartbreak, emotion, and power that are portrayed through the characters and their struggles are combined masterfully to make Sister Carrie one of the best works of fiction ever penned.

Fresh, hard-hitting and powerful

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

Salinger's novel, "The Catcher in the Rye" is on the one hand, an exceptionally simple novel, on the other, more complex than many others like it because it deals with the human mind. Its simplicity begins in its storyline - Holden Caulfield, a well-off teenager from new York has been expelled from his fourth boarding school because he has failed in class. Following a fight with a schoolfriend, Holden wanders out into New York and the reader is permitted to see new York through Holden's eyes, as he verges on a nervous breakdown. The story is disjointed, rambling and fascinating. Holden's mind switches form one train of thought to the other regulary. It is also an extremely honest book - Holden is honest about what he does and why he does them. The book should be read by anyone with an interest in the human mind and its workings.

Dodds - the ideal communicator

Greeks and the Irrational - book cover picture

This is a work that can't fail to grip. It's not a work just for the historian or the classicists. It's a book for anyone with an interest in the mind and the civilisation of Europe and America. Our notion of the ancient Greeks as an intensely rational people doesn't begin to do them justice. They too had their deeper, psychic side, on the basis of which their philosophy developed, and which even the modern culture continues to demonstrate. The Greek view of madness (mania),and possession, not necessarily as a curse, is explored from original sources. 'Madness' could be viewed as even a blessing in this ancient culture. So too the 'Sacred Disease' of Hippokrates (i.e. epilepsy). We find his treatment of what may be the first description of an out-of-body experience - in Pindar (c.470 B.C.E.) and the poetic double vision and causation, the Muses' gift. Not to be missed by anyone with an interest in the human mind.

Crichton at his best

Book title: Jurassic Park
Rating: 5/5

Jurassic Park - book cover picture

"Jurassic Park" is a great novel that I think ranks as one of Crichton's best. It has the feel of a classic, one of those ideas where you say, "Why didn't I think of that?" One might make the argument that the (human) characters take a back seat to the dinosaurs, but I don't believe this is the case- I found the characters to be well developed and interesting. Crichton also seems to do the dinosaurs justice, as he seems to have done his homework on this subject, though I'm guessing some in the scientific community might say that he's taken a few liberties in speculating about some of the dinosaurs' characteristics. But that's artistic license. Overall, a highly entertaining and imaginative novel. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
