Rolling Stone's seriel of "A Man in Full" is a great tease.

A Man in Full - book cover picture

It was great to read the writings of Tom Wolfe after more than a decade since "Bonfire of the Vanities". The serial from "Rolling Stone" is classic Wolfe at his best. I say this because I always enjoyed Wolfe's use of detail to describe even the smallest of characters. The "Rolling Stone" serial alone informs the reader of everything from the "country metal" music of the young California "Okies" to the fashion attire of the men who work the overnight shift in a freezer storing facility. Fans of Wolfe will know why this is great stuff.

Used And Rare : Travels In The Book World - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this. The authors give an open and honest account of how they have found their way in the world of book collecting. Starting as rational novices they finish up as well seasoned and somewhat addicted bibliophiles versed in the peculiar rituals, eccentric personalities and seemingly false economy that surrounds bibliomania. I liked the way that their passion for books grows and grows as each new record setting spend becomes an undeniable must have. This is as much a confession as an adventure tale. I found the book quite quick to read but it also contains some interesting facts and pointers that I'll revisit over time. I can't finish without saying that a few of the negative reviews I have read here say more about the reviewer than about this book - what enormous chips some people have on their shoulders.

A feeling for the northern seas

Book title: The Baltic and North Seas (Seas in History)

The Baltic and North Seas (Seas in History) - book cover picture

Written by two well-known historians of the Baltic/ Scandinavian region, this book breaks ground in the way it presents the history of the two major seas of Northern Europe: we get away from a "names-dates-events" approach to a more holistic view of the term "history" with repsect to the Baltic and North Seas. It is not only people and institutions who figure in this book, but the seas themselves, beginning from their formation. The book examines such questions as how the presence of these seas influenced life around them, ranging from trade and the technology of sailing to the use of the shoreline for livelihood and recreation.Parts of this book 'feel' very visual in nature, though there are rather few (but well chosen) illustrations. Indeed, one could envision a six-part television series based on this book -- the sort of thing the BBC or Discovery or History Channel do well.Too bad about the price -- bring out a paperback edition!

Tully - book cover picture

Don't let the "professional" reviews turn you away from this book! This was one of those books that has stayed stuck in my brain long after it was over. Maybe you had to have "been there" a little bit, for Tully's story certainly brought back memories of my own emotionally charged teenage and young adult years. I could understand Tully. I wonder what she's doing now! I loved this book.

Bravo! Will Break Your Heart, But Heal Your Soul

Book title: Something More
Rating: 5/5

Something More - book cover picture

Almost every chapter of this beautiful book broke my heart because so many of the author's insights echoed my own silent wounds. I am stunned with the power of this incredible book and will give it to as many of my friends and family as I can, just as I did with SBB's first book. But be warned. This is not a sequel or rehash to Simple Abundance. Instead, Something More is just that, a book for women brave enough to realize that each woman must live by her own truth. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that because the author ventures past the comfort zone of a lot of women to explore such sensitive issues as self-loathing and marital indifference, her critics are writing her off without reading her. This is a marvelous, courageous book, one that will break your heart in places, but heal your soul if you stay with it.

Ender's Game (Ender Quartet) - book cover picture

Ender's Game is a GREAT book that put you in the mind of the main charector Ender Wiggin. The book create a picture of Ender and his situation in your mind that is so powerful you feel like you've known Ender your entire life. You can relate Ender to yourself and improve on yourself just by reading the book. Ender is just a young "prodigy"
who is responsible for defending the earth. If you haven't read this book already I strongly suggest it because in my opinion it is the best science fiction book ever written.

A Crown of Swords (The Wheel of Time, Book 7) - book cover picture

Jordan writes for patient people. Those looking for a quick resolution and to-the-next-plot-point writing had better just move along. I find myself grumbling that Jordan doesn't write MORE detail, as I find his world extremely immersive. I have no desire to see this come to an end any time soon. For folks used to 250-300 pp "novels" and form-driven (to steal from WWW terms) characters, Jorden is a terrible, boring writer. For those of us who revel in detail, he's the best currently writing.

Atlas Shrugged : 35th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

This stunning, fictional look at the potential demons of bureaucracy and social dogma is a lasting commentary on the weakness of the masses. Never mind the lengthy monologues and verbose expression of simple ideas. This book is a must read for all. Agree or disagree with the underlying message of the book, but do not be afraid of it. This book will help anyone with any type of open mind to reflect on our world and the policies of bureaucracies (looters) and the gutlessness of the masses (moochers) that make the bureaucracies possible. Amazing number of reviews tells me that this is one well-read book.

Kanzi : The Ape at the Brink of the Human Mind - book cover picture

This wonderful book by Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and Roger Lewin forces the reader to reevaluate what it means to be human. Kanzi is a remarkable ape that has revolutionized our understanding of how our closest relatives think, how our common ancestors may have evolved, and why we may not be as different as once supposed. Roger and Sue's collaboration is very readable and conveys the excitement of Sue's scientific research and Kanzi's remarkable talents

Witches' Children: A Story of Salem - book cover picture

This is an excellent book. It tells the story so well, you feel like you are right there. This is a very interesting part of history for me, and this book makes it exciting to read about. You get drawn in by the excellent story telling. The horror the condemned witches felt. You also see the struggle in the main characters mind. To go along with the afflicted girls, or to tell the truth and possibly be condemned herself. This is a deffinate "don't miss".
