Fasting-And Eating-For Health: A Medical Doctor's Program for Conquering Disease - book cover picture

Dr. Fuhrman's book is a sensible explanation of how our diet can palpably improve our health. I found the book highly credible and easy to read even as the author explained diseases and processes in a careful, technical tone. What I most appreciate from Furhman's book is the emphasis on "eating for health." His program is a bit more strict than Dr. Dean Ornish's: he proposes a new basic 4 food groups--fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Furhman's program eliminates all dairy and animal forms of protein. Finally, the tone of the book is optimistic and I found it highly motivating!

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America - book cover picture

A facinating and wholly enjoyable book, especially anyone who loves Chicago. What a history! The huge undertaking of the World's Fair seemed genuinely immense and complicated and I found myself feeling sad that it no longer stands as the White City. There are parts of this book that are so amazing and humorous, and entail so many famous historical figures, I had to remind myself it was a work of complete non-fiction. The segments on H.H. Holmes are interesting, but not completely satisfying. I began to wish Larson had just stuck to the Fair, as it is a phenomenal story in it's own right. It's sad that there are no such things as World Fairs anymore.

"War and Peace" without the peace

August 1914 - book cover picture

I read an earlier translation by Misha Glenny. Just because the author won the Nobel Prize and stuff didn't mean I had high expectations for this book. In fact, his lecture to Harvard on the decadence of the West put me off. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself reading a classic of 20th century literature, more significant, really, than Boris Pasternak's "Doctor Zhivago" (a remake of Flaubert, "Sentimental Education", after all) and as effortlessly masterful in cutting back and forth between a multiplicity of characters as Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace", his great original and frequently-cited model. On the heels of reading "The First World War" by John Keegan, this book made perfect sense of the opening days of the Great War on the Eastern Front. Alan Furst readers, move up!

The Legend of Luke (Redwall, Book 12) - book cover picture

This is my second favorite Redwall book. I have read every one and i HIGHLY recommend this one. Martin the Warrior is my favorite though. This book was great and i love the characters. I think Ranguvaar the squrril was great. Luke was awesome though it was sad at the end. I like how it was split into 3 books because you need to know how Martin knows all those things about his father that Beau the hare told him. So it tells yooou his quest to find his father and his birthplace. He finds Beau and the hare tells him the story of his father. This was a wonderful book. If you see it in a store buy it!

Brilliant Science Fiction

Book title: Standing Wave
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Standing Wave - book cover picture

I am the Alpha and the Omega, is one way to summarize this book. As an exploration of the nature and scope of human consciousness this book has few rivals, if any, in modern science fiction. Putting down the book every few pages is the only way to absorb all the different levels on which this book can operate(if you give it the chance). It also keeps you from burning out :). While there are a few slow passages, the momentum this book builds up, on a meta-physical level as well as a story level, drives you on to the conclusion. The concept of a standing wave relentlessly and effortlessly pushing forward, is carried forth here in many ways. The story paths all share elements of parallelism and inevitable collision, in a way that is so fun to read about, and is somehow threatening as well. What a read. What a blast. Anyone who is widely read in science fiction and philosophy should find this book just fascinating. I highly recommend it.
