Really good

This is one of the best Titanic books I've ever read. Ever since I watched "A Night to Remember" on TV, I was greatly interested in Titanic. I watched every movie I found, read every book and recorded all documentaries and history programs. I stay up on April 14 sometimes to watch movies. I suggest you read this book; very informative on how the ship sank and the pictures were very good too.

another great read by Sleator
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
About 15 years ago, I read all the books my school library had by William Sleator, but the library did not have this book. I bought it recently, and I read it last night in one sitting! Very rarely does a book capture my interest to that degree; this book is just extremely gripping and fast-moving. Also, the dream itself and the kids' pursuit by the two men are very scary, and I had to know what was going to happen. Although I could complain a bit about lack of character development, I did find that I cared about the characters; however, a sequel that added some depth to them and explained the UFO more would be most welcome. I think this book would be a great choice both for reluctant young readers and for those who devour YA horror and/or sci-fi books, regardless of age.

The most exciting book I've read in a long time...

I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved it. I find several things disquieting, though. Not only does Ms. Donati use Cooper's characters, there are too many uncomfortable similarities to his book, "The Pioneers". Ms. Donati is an excellent writer. My question is this... If you can write a book as exciting as "Into the Wilderness", why do you need to steal storylines and characters from another author's work? Even so, I can't wait for the sequel.

Pirates, intrigue, romance, suspense, believable characters, American history, AND sailing. What more could a person want??A departure from the norm of Marrayat, Lambdin, Pope, et al. - our hero isn't in the Royal Navy. Great shades of Martin Guerre, a no-body shows up in Virginia to settle down to a life of farming. Fickle Fate denies him, throwing him back to the Sea in defense of his newly chosen home. But ... now confronted with the potentially wonderful life he has found, will his past rise out of Neptune's deep to pull him back again?Obviously designed to allow for further installments, this stands alone without leaving you completely hanging at wit's end for what comes next, so that you can enjoy Nelson's other writings of the Revolutionary era.

She Got me!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
I read over the negative reviews of Anita Shreve's ingenious new novel "The Last Time They Met" and felt compelled to add my two cents because I really enjoyed it! I fond the conceit of telling the story backwards to be very daring and well executed. Brava! On the last page I felt many emotions; sadness but also joy that I hadn't seen it coming. I closed the book and smiled thinking: "Anita! You got me! Good one!"

PLEASE, SIR, COULD I HAVE SOME MORE?

Mister Monday is one of the best books I have read in a long time. You immediately connect with Arthur-- he has his weaknesses (asthma and being too curious for his own good) and he has his strengths (his sense of duty, compassion, and courage). This book is jam-packed with many fantastical inventions that is purely Nix at his best. Dog-faced men, the Will, the Nightsweeper, and thousands more. I repeat: this is an extremely compelling read and you'll be hard-fixed to find anything as wonderfully written as this. Thank you and good night!

A Great Indulgence - Lots of Fun!

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I read this book - a sequel to Gone With the Wind?! It just sounds so ridiculous on so many levels! Yet, not only did I read it, but I loved it! Scarlett is real mind candy - engrossing and terrifically fun to read. I actually read the whole thing (all 884 pages) in two days while recovering from the flu - I almost never put it down and was completely absorbed by it. Alexandra Ripley's writing may not be the absolute best, but the story is riveting, carefully planned, and filled with well-developed characters. Ripley indeed picks up where Margaret Mitchell left off, and does so with great respect for the integrity of the original story. Don't laugh - Scarlett is a fantastic story and is a must for anyone who loved Gone With the Wind.

A must for any artist or person in the art world
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Reading Vasari you have a first account of what it was like to know the artist. I was very pleased with the work on Leonardo da Vinci. This book has been the source for many articles and movies on artists. You get the information at first hand. Nobody has to tell you. The reading of this book is a must for any artist of person who claims to be a critic or art lover. Trust me. Jose Vergara, Painter of Beauty, decoloresart@earthlink.net.

I am a latecomer to the novels of Ciji Ware, but very impressed with her ability to richly depict characters and places. I have personally visited the Island of the Swans, and thoroughly hiked in the area in which her book is set. Ms. Ware has a historian's love of accuracy, and her descriptions of Struy, Loch an Eilean, the River Spey, Culloden House (where I have sojourned many times), etc. are absolutely perfect. I was transported, once again to that delightful corner of the world.

Pete Hamill tells a tale so personal, with its obvious human frailties, that I was mesmerized. It reminded me of my own Brooklyn Irish family: the acceptance of drinking for the Irish as perhaps eating macaroni is for the Italians. Celebratory drinking at weddings, communions, anniversaries, can soon turn into the violent, lethargic sod, wrecking his relationships, along with himself. Hamill comes out of it like the Phoenix that he is, and gives you something to think about long after you finish the last page. KEVIN FARRELL
