The Dive From Clausen's Pier : A Novel (Vintage Contemporaries (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Rich in subtle, powerful images of love, loss, betrayal, duty and honour, this book is a provoking, haunting, yet joyful story.
A spinal cord injury that has left Carrie Bell's fianc?e, her high school sweetheart, paralysed for life. Shortly before the injury, both were having serious doubts about their relationship. They now must decide what to do with the rest of their lives, such as they are, in a small Midwestern town. The right thing to do--what would that be? Stick by your fianc?? Leave town? Such is the dilemma of Carrie Bell. Her fianc?, Mike, is the accident victim. Carrie must face many around her who will judge her in some way. Her own, fatherless family. Mike's family. Mike's friends. Their friends as a couple. Her own best friend. And everyone else in town who knows them. Ann Packer writes a compelling, fascinating tale of the difficult choices a young woman faces as she faces personal loss and the painful process of personal growth that follows.

My Bible

Book title: The Mists of Avalon
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Mists of Avalon - book cover picture

This was, by far, the most amazing book I have ever read. Not speaking facetiously, it changed my life! Ms. Bradley has such a unique and in-depth writing style. Each of the many characters retains their own personalites which are highly distinct, as opposed to many other fantasy books in which the characters are indefinable. The Mists of Avalon gave me a new perspective on the Arthurian legends, as well as the rich history which is intrinsically woven into it. It was so realistic and well researched, placing the whole story into the place in history in which it would have happened. Ms. Bradley also shows how though times have changed, the same basic conflicts remain; conflict of religion, of sexuality, of the role of women vs. men, and of the conflicts one experiences within themselves. Though it took me a long time to read, which was a joy in itself, this book has invariably become my Bible!

Toss those Lonely Planet "travel storries" read this.

Are You Experienced? - book cover picture

This novel rocks. If you have travelled a lot and are fed up why so many storries always seem to ignore the one truth about the "Lonely planet" third world backpacker scene. That is its largely made up of imature teens and twenty somethings taking themselves way, way too seriously. Pretending to be world wise pioneers for western civilization, while pouting a teen huff as they arnt getting laid as much as they want. This book does not ignore this, its beautiful, its hilarious , its scenic and sexy, very well written and my gads its true and I'm going to stick it up the @@s of the next, twenty year old, white rasta from Berkely I find wearing no shoes, pretending to be as poor as the locals while loafing around on dads money. To the teen chica getting stoned on some dried donkey dung thinking its marajuana, that goes for you too. Woah there stop. This is one novel you will lend out and never see again. Im going to buy it and read it again.

Human fallibility, pain, and loss

Book title: Lie Down in Darkness

Lie Down in Darkness - book cover picture

Early in William Styron's novel Lie Down in Darkness the reader is introduced to a man, Milton Loftis, at the train station. Milton is a good allusion; whatever paradise this man has hoped for in life, it has been lost. How?There, I think, is the essential question that drives this novel. How do we bring ourselves to lose things we charish? How does this happen? It's a deep and heartbreaking question, and it may leave many people unable to read this book. This is understandable, but reading this novel, though the author's first novel and somewhat experimental, allows one to view the depths of human suffering, and perhaps provides ways to avoid it.

The Brand You 50 : Or : Fifty Ways to Transform Yourself from an 'Employee' into a Brand That Shouts Distinction, Commitment, and Passion! - book cover picture

This is from a real reader, not some book distribution company looking to promote sales. I bought this book a year into a non-productive and demoralizing career change effort. Not only did it freshen my resolve, it gave me things to do that worked. If you are changing jobs by choice or by force, and especially if it has been a while since you "packaged" yourself to be marketed, you can't lose and will probably benefit a lot from this short little wonder. I owe it a lot. I had a fantastic new position and doubled my salary within two months of reading it.It is so good, I have given a copy to a friend four times in the past year, friends who are as stuck as I was.

My favorite Mr. Men/Little Miss book

Book title: Mr Messy
Rating: 5/5

Mr Messy - book cover picture

This was my favorite Mr. Men/Little Miss book as a wee whipper snapper. Now I am sharing these stories with other people's children. Kids find them just as amusing today as I did then, and (eep!) now I can even see how us adults do, too! The books in the series range from great to average to pointless; and while I have not read them ALL (there are SO many), Mr. Messy is at the top of my list. He's messy, he's cute, he's charming, and he's paid an unexpected visit from Mr. Tidy and Mr. Neat. And from the lesson standpoint, this book persuasively illustrates how much "nicer" things are when they're clean rather than blatantly telling children to clean up after themselves. The end was the best part, but I won't spoil it by telling! Modest in length, colorful pictures on each page, and easy enough for kids of all ages to understand, these quirky books are great for early readers one step up from Dr. Seuss.

A Review on And Then There Were None

And Then There Were None - book cover picture

This was the best book I've ever read in my life. When I recieved the letter informing me that I had to reaad a book over the summer for school, I thought to myself, "what a waste of time". Yet I began to read and within the first pages, I was hooked. I couldn't put the book down! ine night I even read fifty pages, and I didn't have to. In the beginning of the story, a mysterious person, refered to as U.N. Owen, sends ten peoplenotes saying they should take an opporunity to visit Indian Island. The charactors agree, thinking U.N. Owen is a distant friend. From the point the people arriveat Indian Island everything turns into hell. All ten people die, and it is a musteru to find out who it is. They all die in their own mysterious ways according to a poem posted above all of the inmates beds. Agatha Christie kept me guessing every second who the murderer was. Don't skip a page and read the Epilouge or else you'll miss out!

Interior Designing for All Five Senses - book cover picture

I just finished reading this book, and am SO glad I bought it! It's full of wonderful common-sense ideas that make total sense and don't cost big bucks. I am now really inspired (and excited) to try some of the ideas in my own home -- and because I'm sure I didn't pick up all the great information the first time, I'll be reading this again...and again...and again. A SUPER investment!! So glad this book is out there!

One of the best philosophical works I have ever read

Book title: Philosophical Investigations (3rd Edition)
Rating: 5/5

Philosophical Investigations (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations is an intellectually stimulating discussion of language and more.Instead of explaining the nature of language, Wittgenstein instead describes language in the form of various language games. By discussing various ways in which language works, Wittgenstein does not explain it, but all the same provides a very interesting way to view language. However, Wittgenstein does not only discuss language. His discussion of language games moves into areas of perception and thought as Wittgenstein shows how our perception of the world and language influence each other, and how language influences how we think. While Philosophical Investigations is written in the form of numbered paragraphs, the text still flows, with both descriptive analysis and brief dialogues. This work is one of the most enlightening works of philosophy written in this century, and is definitely worth reading.

The Giver (Newbery Medal Book) - book cover picture

I would not say The Giver is for everybody, because it is too complex for some people. But, wow, anyone who is looking for a wonderful book- READ THIS! I first read it in third grade(now I am in sixth grade)- after I read it I bought a copy and now read it at least twice a year. I think it is a beautiful book- the characters are wonderful, especially Jonas's "parents". The plot made me think more about what our future will be like- will we try to eliminate all pain- all suffering- all differences- and live in a world as horrifyingly perfect as Jonas's? Or will we end up totally different? This is a greatly insightful book- and I highly, HIGHLY recommend it.
