Reads like an uber, as moving as "Cold Mountain"

Bittersweet - book cover picture

A beautifully written and very poignant (look at the title) lesbian love story set in "olden times." This would make a great film. I intend reading her mystery novels based on the strength of her writing here. But someone should give this book a better editing job, the typos are glaring and look as though someone let the spellcheck do the work for them instead of re-reading the manuscript for comprehension and it replaced words with some very odd alternatives. This is a novel every bit as moving as "Cold Mountain" (which should've ended with the women in a relationship as a couple.)

Black Like Me : 35th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

Black like me is a journey into the depths of human emotion and prejudice. Griffin chooses under his own power to brave the hate of a world in its own and an existance that is not fit for human survival. He wishes to know how and why our society is destroying itself with inconsequential arguements. Griffin discovers that some would prefer the truth remain hidden, and that this danger and intolerance can hit quite close to home. Griffin endangered his life, and also that of his family, because he believed his experience was one that needed to be told, and his story upset a generation to enlighten the next.

The real taste of real life

Book title: Medieval People

Medieval People - book cover picture

Eileen Power studies the Middle Ages, not from an abstract historical point of view but from simple and real people and what we can know about them. I particularly like her study of Marco Polo, from his notes and diaries, which gives us a materialistic and realistic vision of what they saw of the world, and not what we want to see of what they saw. I also loved Madame Eglentyne, a prioress taken from Chaucer but at once identified to one particular prioress through real life archives and descriptions. A very interesting and useful book to enable us to capture the density of everyday life in the Middle Ages.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

Where the Heart Is: A Novel - book cover picture

Dear Oprah, I have to admit that I had never read one of your book club books, but when I heard about this book from a co-worker of mine(which by chance we work for Wal-Mart in Humble, Tx) I had to read it. Normally, I am a semi-slow reader , but I finished this book in about three or four days. I couldn't put it down. I am currently reading another Oprah recommended reading, "The Deep End Of The Ocean." Keep up all of your great work, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!!!!

Probably the best recent introduction

The Oxford Guide to Heraldry - book cover picture

An excellent introduction to the field by the Somerset Herald. Chapters cover the origins and evolution of the herald's art, the marshalling of arms, the technical aspects of blazoning, and even the proper decorative use of heraldry. The emphasis, naturally, is on Britain, but Europe and the United States are included as well. Very nicely illustrated, too, with a thick section of color plates. And a nice gift book, too.

No kidding -- Among the best books ever written!

Hawaii - book cover picture

One of my favorite books of all time. Just an outstandingly good read. The colors and sounds of Hawaii come to life with the characters he creates. The section on missionaries literally changed my life because it changed how I thought of the whole mission movement. This is presented in typical Michener style, starting with the pre-history of the region and bringing it through time to the present. The stories and characters presented here are among the most interesting he ever created. I have often said I envy anyone who is reading it for the first time. Besides, it's like taking a Hawaiian vacation. Pick up a copy, and have a really good trip!

Pure Baseball: Pitch by Pitch for the Advanced Fan - book cover picture

Easily the best baseball education in print that I've ever seen. It's like taking a master's course in baseball. You have an opportunity to almost sit down with a major leaguer and say "Teach Me" and he does. Keith has a bit of a weakness as far as pitch sequencing and understanding missed spots, but they are not particularly glaring. His understanding of counts, and situations outside of the count (inning, score, particular players involved etc..) are exemplary. Any serious ballplayer's dream.

Great French Self-Study Book

French: A Self-Teaching Guide, 2nd Edition - book cover picture

This book is great. I recently decided to brush up on french for my next vacation to Martinique. I haven't taken french since high school. This book is great because it starts off with some simple vocabulary, some grammar and pronounciations rules, and voila! you are learning and speaking french. If you have already studied french then the language starts to come back to you and the book makes learning very easy. There are many exercises after each section to help reinforce the vocabulary learned. The book is divided up very well into sections like: Basic Expressions, At the Restaurant, At the Airport, etc. So the sections are functional, especially if you plan to use what you learn. Great book for the beginner and anyone who wants to brush up!

The Art of the Long View: Planning for the Future in an Uncertain World - book cover picture

With all of the uncertainties and unknowns, how can an organization plan effectively and take actions? Peter Schwartz shows how through the elegant use of "scenarios". Peter is one of the giants of systems thinking who has implemented his ideas. He explains his approach this way: "You can tell you have good scenarios when they are both plausible and surprising; when they have the power to break old stereotypes; and when the makers assume ownership of them and put them to work. Scenario making is intensely participatory, or it fails."

The Confession - book cover picture

The Confession is a fast paced read, with interesting and complex characters, snappy dialogue, and clever twists. As always, Siegel takes a serious look at issues along the way, and brings San Francisco to life in a way that makes even this native sit up and take notice. Sheldon Siegel is the best of the legal thriller writers around. I'm only sorry I have to wait another year for the next installment.
