Readable biography of the great Reformer.

Here I Stand : A Life of Martin Luther - book cover picture

Whether or not one considers Martin Luther a great man of faith, one cannot deny his importance in the history of not only Christianity but the world. Bainton's biography is both informative and scholarly, while remaining within the grasp of all. It cast a light over Luther's life from his early spiritual trials until the end that illuminated the actions of the Reformer and allows the reader to get inside the mind of Luther and gain a depth of insight to the Reformation that the standard textbook does not supply. Excellent reading for anyone interested in the history of Christianity.

Spoiled by homophobia

Three Worlds of Michelangelo - book cover picture

This biography might have been wonderful to me if it had not been spoiled by the author's foolish attempts to cast doubt on Michelangelo's homosexuality. This puts Beck into the same category with Irving Stone and Charlton Heston in The Agony and the Ecstasy. On the verge of the 21st Century to get yet another book denying that there were any great gay men in history is simply not acceptable.

Day Late and a Dollar Short - book cover picture

The level of intensity that I felt when I first purchased this book only escalated as I read it. Terry McMillan has done an excellent job of capturing the manner in which African American family life can truly be. The way our lives play out is so very interesting and Terry McMillan has showed us the way that parents typically affect their children's lives, the way sibling affect one another's lives and the extraordinary impact that special friendship can have on us as well. The sad reality is that things normally do not change until it is too late to realize how much family really does mean to us. This book was a wake up call for me!I enjoyed and completely understood each character in this book and Ms. McMillan will forever be at the top of my list as authors. I loved this book more than I have loved the other books.Simply the best!

Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans (Da Capo Paperback) - book cover picture

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The editors kept Armstrong's voice true to the legend and honest in its depictions of his sometimes harsh life in New Orleans. However, Artmstrong's sense of humor and goodness shine through his story and the reader really learns to like him as a person as well as a great musician. As a native New Orleanian, I really enjoyed his descriptions of the city during that time. I look forward to reading this book again!

Surviving the Applewhites - book cover picture

I read the book Surviving the Applewhites. I gave it five stars. This was a great book. The one thing I would change is the beginning. I thought it should have been more dramatic.
Jake, the main character is a juvenile delinquent. He has gotten kicked out of a lot of schools. Now a girl by the name of E.D has to put up with him. She didn't like him from the time she set eyes on him. She has good reason to think he is a big jerk.
If you liked Stargirl you will love this book.It tells of a person that sticks out in the crowd.

Hatchet - book cover picture

By Gaury Paulson, Jan/28/03Reviewed by: James Brady I think Hatchet was a wonderful book. It is full of adventurous quests. But I do have some comments about it, one of which is, "Why couldn't Brian go for the black box in the beginning?" I mean it was a great story and all. Everything that he described I could so picture with perfect detail. But, I seriously doubt that he taught himself how to make his own bow and arrows. I recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about adventures in the wildlife.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Puffin Modern Classics) - book cover picture

I give this book five stars because it is a very interesting book. The author is very creative with his words. It is that kind of book you don't want to stop reading. The part that I like best is when Charlie and Mr. Wonka go to the big elevator. It is a great book for young readers. I also liked this book because it is very funny and interesting. If you ask me you should read it, it's a great book.

Women in Early Modern England 1550-1720 - book cover picture

I have the privilege of being a pupil of Patricia Crawford's at the University of Western Australia, so naturally I was interested in reading the product of her colloboration. For a history student this book is marvellous for an introduction into the history of our female ancestors and a welcome relief from those dry products of academia which delight in annoying and perplexing the humble reader with page long sentences, words which I suspect the author has made up and long dry recitations of 'facts'. This is an easy to read and very informative piece of work, which I would highly reccommend for all who are interested in discovering a hidden voice of early modern history - the mighty female. And just in case you're thinking my review may be laced with bias, read this book and you will see that its not.

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) - book cover picture

Honestly, I couldn't put this book down. I've been a fan of the Robert Jordan's series for a while now, and needed something to tide me over until the tenth book comes out. A friend of mine told me to buy this book by Terry Goodkind, and I absolutely loved it. The action flows non-stop throughout this book. My heart was pounding almost the whole time. I actually cried in some parts! Amazing! Go buy it. You'll be so happy you did!

Rio: Man Of Destiny (The Blaylocks) (Silhouette Desire, 1233) - book cover picture

I have to say of the Blaylock series this is my favorite book so far. The main male character has his hands full with this strong stubborn female character that not only sets him on his ear but every male in the town when she takes over their territory. I found this book so humorous and romantic at the same time I didn't know if I should laugh or have warm cuddly feelings. Ms. London ensures her readers have a great understanding of the backrounds of the characters and the small town traditions and legacy. You will feel like you are so involved in their lives. You can't miss the opportunity to read this book, you will probably read it more than once.
