What a fantastic book! From the moment I started to the very ending I did not put it down. Anna Quindlen weaves a complex tale of an abused woman on the run with child from her abusive husband. The plot starts with her escape and proceeds to show us the beginning of a new life for her provided by an agency that helps out women such as herself. The main character Fran/Beth is sympathetic mainly because she seems to be a real human being with flaws just like the rest of us. Her frustration in building the new life and worrying about her son really hits home. I admire the fact that Ms. Quindlen did not sugar coat any aspect of the book and gave us a realistic view as to what it would be in a relationship so horrific as well as the impact it could have for all involved. Definitely recommended if you have a few hours to spare - this book cannot be read in stages for it is impossible to put down.

A great book!

Fireflies - book cover picture

I have read almost all of Morrell fiction books and I loved them. This one is different (non-fiction) about his real son who was battling against cancer in a positive way. That's the kind of character that God wants to see because of what Jesus did for us. This is a great book for people affecting by this disease searching for positive way or needing encouragement. This book helps me in some way by learning some medical terms that I know nothing about.First couple of chapters were confusing after knowing the author, but after chapter 4, it becomes more clear and gets interesting. You won't be disappointed.

Sammy the Seal (I Can Read Book 1) - book cover picture

One day, Sammy the seal decides that he wants to go outside of the zoo to see what life is like in the outside world. During his adventures he walks along a busy street, swims in a man's bathtub, and goes to school. I think it is really cute how people don't even notice there is a seal walking down the street, or if they do they don't act like it is any thing out of the ordinary. The pictures in the original 1959 version are very cute, full of expression and well colored. In the original the colors are shaded in, and almost look as if they were colored in by some very artistic kid with crayons. The story flows wonderfully, even if some parts don't quite make sense. It is a very cute, if rather nonsensical, story.Loggie-log-log-log

Feeling Good : The New Mood Therapy - book cover picture

I learned of this book from a friend in counseling for depression and was curious. I read it and go back to it from time to time. It helped me to battle the negative thought habits that interfere will full enjoyment of life. There is a chapter on anger that I feel would be helpful to almost anyone. The chapter on underlying beliefs that set one up for depression was also excellent and thought provoking.. The review of antri depressents was also very interesting. This book will not be enough help or someone struggling with clinical depression, but I think it would be a good tool for therapy. For people who battle low level depression from time to time, it's got some good exercises and advice. I highly recommend it for almost anyone as a way to deepen understanding of what leads to depression.

One Word- Awesome!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) - book cover picture

This book is wonderfully written so that you can't tell what will happen next, especially when you get to the end. It also makes you wonder if there really is a witch world and we are just Muggles, or if there really is a kid somewhere like the heroic Harry Potter. I think this book had more suspense than the first one Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but I loved that one also. They say that these books are Children's Books, but I do not believe that to be true. Everyone no matter what age will come to love these great stories about the adventures of Harry, Ron, Hermoine, and even to come to dislike Malfoy. The characters in this book are beautifully described so that you can think of people who are exactly like them. I consider Hermoine like myself. J.K. Rowling is a great author and one day I wish to write books as great as her soon-to-be classics.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

I could NOT put this book down!
I have read it three times in total and plan to read it again. Betty Smith writes of the coming of age of one young girl in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn. Smith does well in characterizing Brooklyn and its inhabitants, from the "fast" but warmhearted woman to the lonely army boy.
Smith accurately portrays the hopes and fears as well as the crushed dreams and ambitions of one young girl looking for happiness in a world full of nostaligia.
A time that is past comes alive with glitter and grit in Smith's words.

Miracle at Philadelphia: The Story of the Constitutional Convention, May to September 1787 - book cover picture

This book stands out because it is one the most readable books you will find in the history section. It is very clear and you do get a lot of information about the time that representatives from all the states were in Philadelphia during a hot summer to write the Constitution. If you are a highschool student it is therefore very interesting because it gives you a good insight in how this remarkable document came into being. For more advanced readers it is also very interesting, it is especially better than any other book on this subject, it makes the whole process clearer than in a standard history book. It also gives a great explenation of the men who were involved. Through looking at the private documents of the participants she makes the process more human, and therefore more easily understandable.

Houses by Mail : A Guide to Houses from Sears, Roebuck and Company - book cover picture

This is an excellent resource for amateur preservationists and architectural historians alike. The introduction is an excellent background into the how, why and where of these houses as well as containing some great turn of the century interior shots. I am privileged enough to live in a neighborhood filled with the sturdy beauties from this book and plan to use it to educate my neighbors about their 1900-1910 architecture.

Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) - book cover picture

I read this one to pieces when I was little, now my little one is doing the same thing. I always felt sorry for the poor guy, being badgered half to death to eat something as nasty looking as green eggs and ham, but the jist of the story is to try things before you say you don't like them. What's neat is you can bring it back up at the dinner table when little ones don't want to eat. You can just say, "are they green eggs and ham?" It certainly works for us and really opens the door to eating new foods for toddlers. What a great book to help with learning new things too. A library classic that's for sure, and very entertaining. We love it in our house.

Understanding power . . .

The Path to Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 1) - book cover picture

I avoided this series for years because, as a Texan, I had plenty of exposure to LBJ during my lifetime. I always considered him with mixed emotions, there being so much good and so much bad in his political record. Caro writes about power, not about Lyndon Johnson. Johnson is the subject in the sense that a microbe is the subject of a biologist's report on a disease or a life function. And I think the latter example--life function--is probably more apt. Power is essential to the body politic. And it requires special gifts to make a career of its acquisition and use. Caro studies power in this way. And Johnson is a perfect study.A fascinating book and very highly recommended.
