Ranger Rocks!

Ten Big Ones (A Stephanie Plum Novel) - book cover picture

TEN BIG ONES may well be the Stephanie Plum novel remembered as the one where Ranger came into his own. In many ways, Ranger is the subplot here convincing readers that -- yes -- this is the right choice for Stephanie, not mopey old Joe Morelli. Other readers will disagree with this assessment but not with the fact that Stephanie is in good form here, alternating blowing things up and endangering her life as per usual. Some reviewers have expressed disapointment at this book. I don't really understand that. This is classic Stephanie Plum. This is who she is and what she does. Great fun with little requirement for emotional participation. Sometimes that's OK.

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution - book cover picture

Prior to tearing my achilles tendon I weighed 220, after 4 months of rehab I was 250 even. I decided to go with Atkins' since it is the original diet plan, the diet which started the revolution. I'm only a week into the plan and have lost 15 pounds in 7 days. Like most of you I read the reviews online listing several complaints of the pain and agony of this diet. To date I have had none of these symptoms. As an athlete I know that physical success comes with a price, this diet may not be for everyone but it definitely works.
Again, 15 pounds in seven days without any physical exercise, just a change in foods.

Successful Private Practice: Winning Strategies for Mental Health Professionals - book cover picture

Don't be fooled by the new title and cover, it's the same book inside. Not one word has been changed - I hope! If you want to learn to "manage managed care," this is your book. It is certainly one aspect of private practice, but a truly "Successful Private Practice" is so much more than knowing how to navigate managed care. One of these days, maybe I will write the real "Successful Private Practice!"

Talion : Revenant - book cover picture

Talion : Revenant is simply one the best single book i've ever read. It's easy to read, you can see easily the world in which the caracter is living. It's the hero who tells his story, and let me tell you that Stackpole really had it! The link between the pass of the caracter (his youth and his training) and his present is magnificantly built. Stackpole really did it with this one! It's a must be read to all fantasy lovers

Can there be anyone better than Orson Scott Card?

Enchantment - book cover picture

I almost didn't buy this book because the title and the cover art seemed a little feminine. But then I said to myself, "Hey, this guy has never written ANYTHING I didn't love. So I bought the book and realized something: Orson Scott Card could probably write a grocery list that would be more interesting than most of what's on the shelf today! Buy the book. Don't be stupid. (Like I nearly was.) Card, you da'MAN!

Brave New Worlds : Staying Human in the Genetic Future - book cover picture

Appleyard writes in a clear concise style and knows his subject extremely well. Although not a scientist he doesn't hesitate to take on the high priests of scientism, asking how many times before science has claimed to have the answer to everything, and how many times before has it been proved wrong. His main thrust however is that lay people need to question scientists and take responsibility for the use of new discoveries. Taking the cloning of Dolly the sheep as his starting point he forecasts the likely effects unquestioning acceptance of the use of such techniques will have on human reproduction; suggesting that without realising it we could be heading for a new type of eugenics, just as immoral as the terrible experiments the world has seen in the past.

One of Penman's Best

Dragon's Lair (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

This was easily the best of the three historical mysteries that Penman has written. Very factual and engaging, this one makes the characters feel so real that you almost beleive you are there with them. Action packed and exciting, I couldn't put it down until the very last page! It's one of those books you wish would never end. Although I love her medieval histories more than the first two books in this series, this one easily lives up to Penman's reputation as the premier historical novelist.

Reads better than a mystery!

Book title: The Perilous Journey of the Donner Party

The Perilous Journey of the Donner Party - book cover picture

What a great read! What a horrifying subject -- cannibalism! I found it difficult to believe that this book was shelved in the "children's section" of my local library, especially when I was reading how the survivors had to resort to eating the flesh of their dead fellow travelers or die of starvation. After reading the whole book, I found the subject of cannibalism less horrifying than at first. This is not to say that I was brought around to accepting the practice of eating human flesh! It is more a tribute to the author for her very deft handling of her subject -- the Donner Party and their struggle for survival; their courage in their fight against Mother Nature. Last, but not least, my compliments to the author for her understanding that until we are in the "other person's shoes", we are not qualified to judge the actions of other people.Definitely a book to be read by young people, but with adult guidance!

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - book cover picture

This book has become a Christmas classic in our household. We read it every year and enjoy it just as much each time. Each year there are a few more children who will sit and listen to the story and we laugh at the antics of those kids. I guess some of our kids wish they had the nerve to do some of the things Imogene and Ralph and the rest of the gang do. I have given numerous copies of this book as gifts at Christmas and our friends love the story also. Our copy sits on the coffee table for our guests to pick up and read at their leisure. It is quick and very enjoyable reading.

Fight Fat After Forty: The Revolutionary Three-Pronged Approach That Will Break Your Stress-Fat Cycle and Make You Healthy, Fit, and Trim for Life - book cover picture

My husband and I have had an inordinate amount of stress in our lives over the last several years. Dr Peeke says we've been living in Imelda Marco's closet as "the other shoe" keeps dropping on our heads. We have been most fortunate to have Dr Peeke's care and expertise to help us maintain our weight during those times of high stress and have learned what to do to counteract our "stress overeater" habits. Her book is a clearly written explanation of what happens to our bodies, particularly to women's, as we reach our 40's and beyond. Dr Peeke's realistic and practical advice gives us hope that we can finally be in control and become more fit. While the emphasis is on women, Dr Peeke's research has made a great difference in both our lives. There is no magic pill which will take the weight off your body; but reading this book will give you the roadmap to better health. Get in the driver's seat with her excellent book.
