Probably the best book I've ever read.

Mattimeo (Redwall, Book 3) - book cover picture

I really like this book because I like fantasy and it is cool to have animals like mice be the main characters. This defininately fits the definition of great fantasy. I also like it because it is so good that you never want it to end and it is so long that it takes a long time to read it because it is like 436 pages or something. I still read pretty quickly because it was so good. The only bad thing is that rats are bad in Redwall and I have a pet rat and it is a lot nicer than described in the book but it is fantasy. If you like fantasy and animals, this will probably be your 3rd or 4th favorite book you've ever read. On a scale of one to ten,ten being the best, I would give it a nine and one third.I would probably say that it is the best book I've ever read(I say probably because the other Redwall books are great too). If you like Redwall, you will probably like Harry Potter too.

Point Blank (Alex Rider Adventure) - book cover picture

I was just looking through some books when I saw the cover of Point Blanc. I thought it looked cool, so I picked it up and read the first two sentences. From that moment on, I knew this book was for me. I bought it and read some of it on my way home. I had finished it within two or three hours, it was so good. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes anything military at all. The first chapter is really brilliant, as is the whole book. The detail is fantastic, ecpecially on anything mechanical, such as cranes, guns, helicopters and aeroplanes. The book's starting chapther is amazing. Read the first sentance and your hooked on it.

The Orchid Hunter - book cover picture

Ms. Landis has written a wonderfully refreshing romp that has proven her versatility as a talented writer. This novel has something for everyone. The exotic jungle setting will capture the interest of the adventurous reader. And the compelling characters and storyline will satisfy fans of her earlier works, such as WILDFLOWER and JUST ONCE, which also had fun and fiesty heroines like the free-spirited Joya of THE ORCHID HUNTER. This book has now become my #1 all-time favorite by Jill Marie Landis.

Fighting Back : A Battered Woman's Desperate Struggle to Survive - book cover picture

This book is a heart wrenching story about a woman who had no where to go an no one to turn to. It shows just how devastating it can be to be trapped in an abusive relationship. Although she climbs her way out of the hell that she lived in you still cry for her when she is facing the rage of her husband. It is refreshing to see that the services available to victims of domestic violence have grown over the years. I would reccomend that you read this book if you are a victim, a survivor, a friend, or just have a compassionate heart.

Normal is relative

Day Late and a Dollar Short - book cover picture

This is solely to respond to Linda Huggins who wants to know if the characters portrayed in A Day Late and A Dollar Short are considered normal. Remember, the word 'normal' is relative because what's common in some families is strange for others. I think what reviewers are trying to say is that we may recognize common traits of the characters through the people we know in real life. That's what they're probably talking about. There are only so many personality traits and Ms. McMillan captures many of them and that's why we can identify with this 'real-to-life' story. Hope that helps.

Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers - book cover picture

Had I read this book early in my career (right after college), it may not have had the same impact as it does now. I was able to say "I did that, I do that or I've done that" to a large percent of the book. I never realized that what I was doing was hurting my career. Having picked up this book at the start of a new career path, I can use all of Dr. Frankel's coaching tips from the beginning without fear of co-workers wondering if I'm sick. I've been in my new position for only two weeks and have already stopped myself on many occasions from "bein' a girl". If you're serious about your career, you'll definitely want this book in your brief case! She has a way with words that makes every example seem to have come straight from a place you've been. All of my choices now are guided by "the book". Thank you Dr. Frankel, you are my hero!

Excursions in Geometry by Ogilvy

Excursions in Geometry - book cover picture

The work describes many types of geometric challenges in
everyday life. For instance, the optimal angle theta is presented
in a movie theatre. The screen is depicted as the base and a
mid-point in the back of the theatre is the triangle peak.
Steiner's circles are shown so that equal circles can be
moved in an infinite combination of patterns. The work has
a variety of Euclidean topics to challenge the mathematically
inclined readers. This work is perfect for any class science
project. Some of the challenges presented could occupy a
graduate thesis.

erudite historical farce- outrageously hilarious

The Sot-Weed Factor (The Anchor Literary Library) - book cover picture

based on real life individual ebenezer cooke from the seventeenth century, barth fabricates a stunningly rich, complex world for that character which is brilliantly funny, historically rigorous and contains some of the best writing of the century. passage after passage is filled with deeply authentic atmosphere and dialogue that is so true to an earthy kind of slang of the times that is leaves novel phrases ringing in your head for weeks. it can be read (at least) on a couple of levels, the simplest being a recounting of colonial maryland through the experiences and eyes (and interactions with many, many other characters) of cooke. at a deeper level it could be read as a philosophical confrontation of an individual life with the world at large. one of the most influential works of fiction i've ever read.

Modern European History - book cover picture

Hey, Whitney Young HS/AP Euro students, I'm sure you already heard of this book from Mr. Tennison and previous students... need I say more? For those of you not a WY student, this book helped me a lot with understanding topics that I needed to review for the AP exam. Keeping in mind that it isn't a replacement for your textbook or class lectures, this book can really help you jog your memory--exactly what it's supposed to do. Too bad finding an AP U.S. equivalent isn't as easy to find...
