Broken Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries) - book cover picture

Sandford delivers a taut book laced with plenty of humor, tension, violence, and pace. The dialogue is as good as Elmore Leonard's, the comic-relief is frequent and appropriate, and the pacing and crimes are done to perfection. I plowed through this entry in the Davenport series, and wish I could discover the entire series anew so I could relive the literary satisfaction again.

Highly recommended!

For the Time Being - book cover picture

To all prospective readers: please ignore the one-star reviews written by the slack-jawed types who can't appreciate the depth and breadth of Annie Dillard's writing. Believe me, this book will change your life. At least, it changed mine. Never, never have I read such a passionate book. Yes, it's difficult, and yes, it takes more than a single reading to get it all, but my God, put down the latest best-seller and set to work on one of the best books ever written. I know, I know, that sounds like hyperbole. But I truly believe that, twenty, thirty years from now, For The Time Being will be known as one of the great books of the twentieth century. (Won't the slack-jawed, one-star reviewers feel silly?) Seriously, READ THIS BOOK.

Morning Glory - book cover picture

Wow! What a story. The author takes you right into the hearts of Will and Ellie. I loved them. They were so vivid that I can't get them out of my mind. I find myself thinking about the children and the grandchildren that have surely been added to this wonderful family. Every minute of reading every page was a pleasure. I worried right along with Ellie about Will in the Marines. What a superior writer Ms. Spencer is. This is the first book I remember reading by her, but will keep going until I have read them all. Thank you for such wonderful characters, the boys, Gladys, the old brothers who kept watch over the town from their bench in the town square.

Watership Down - book cover picture

Adams' eloquent tale of a band of rabbits searching for freedom and safety can strike a chord with humans as well. The bonds of friendship forged in adversity are easily understood by anyone who has withstood considerable odds and come out all right. Adams explains the lapine world through their eyes, complete with a "Lapine Glossary" for those not in the know of rabbitspeak. The protagonists are given very distinct--human, if you will--traits and personalities. Adams creates his own microcosm of our world by bringing up themes familiar to our own world and the creation of new civilizations: the development of leadership and structure, roles in a society, and mutual respect for the members of a competent cadre. Hazel-rah, Bigwig, Fiver, Blackberry, Dandelion, and the rest inhabit a world not unlike our own. This is an adventure, a fairy tale, a parable, and the makings of a legend and a classic.

Moon: The Life and Death of a Rock Legend - book cover picture

I found this book a lengthy but rewarding read. Wonderfully anecdotal yet surprisingly factual, dispelling many myths. I felt the book suffered a little from borderline, repetitious "idol-worshiping" by the author, but the depth of research makes up for any excess passion displayed by the author. Tony Fletcher is commended for the sympathetic way he dealt with the ongoing torment bestowed on Keith Moon's long suffering female partners, never glorifying domestic violence. Well worth the price, whatever it may be.

Neverwhere - book cover picture

Having read very few fantasy novels, I am not a proclaimed expert. All I know is that I was soooo intrigued by this novel. The dark underworld of the London subway made for a fas- cinating setting. I loved each character: Richard Mayhew, Door, the Marquis de Carabas, Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar. The good ones were so good they made me ache, the bad ones were so evil they made me shudder. And then there were the ones you were never sure of. I cannot recall a book in which every scene was so vivid in my imagination. I have since bought everything I have been able to find by Gaiman. Just finished Stardust, a wonderful tale of two worlds. Looking forward to Smoke and Mirrors and the Sandman collection.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (Grand Master Editions) - book cover picture

"Something wicked, this way comes". You have to respect an author that is willing to take the title of his book from the master Shakespeare. Furthermore, Bradbury manages to incorporate myriad ideas for young and old into one true feast for the senses. No matter how many times I read this, I am always struck by the poetic manner in which the story is told.

This is the story of Will Holloway and Jim Nightshade, and how they outwit the evil carnival and its twisted custodians. Seems like a great idea for a kid's book, yeah? And it is. However, add in thorough discussions on the nature of growing old and the character of good versus evil and what it means to be one or the other, and you have a dissertation worthy of any graduate student. All this is told in Bradbury's characteristic bouncy, playful syntax and is always a consummate pleasure to read.

This is required reading for the imaginative child or the adult looking to reconnect with their youth and the wonder therein.

DIAMOND AGE, THE (Bantam Spectra Book) - book cover picture

SNOW CRASH was the first Stephenson book I read and I loved it. DIAMOND AGE is even better. It is complex and richly detailed yet fast paced and difficult to put down. Obviously having sharpened his prose skills, Stephenson builds a fascinating future set in a tumultuous "New Shanghai" where nanotechnology permeates every aspect of life and a rigid class system is about to be overturned. He takes you through the lives and times of a number of interesting characters and brings them together in a surprising, grandiose ending. In short, if you like William Gibson, you'll like this. His discussion of nanotech actually outclasses Gibson's attempts in IDORU. If you liked SNOW CRASH you'll like this one even better.

Midwives - book cover picture

This book was a pleasant surprise for me. I had never read anything by Bohjalian before and just picked it up on the way to the airport for a long flight. This book made that flight seem like a 5 minute trip to the 7-11!The book is written from the point of view of Connie, a 13 year old whose mother, Sybil, is a midwife. Sybil performs a birth that has major complications which land her in court. This book looks at the human side of the story, while still keeping the legalities of the trial part of the plot. It makes for an interesting read.I HIGHLY recommend this book. I read it for the first time a few years ago, and I'm presently enjoying it for a second time! I believe it would be a great beach read, too!
