Second Half of Marriage, The - book cover picture

I read this book when it first came out some time ago and wrote a very strong recommendation for the book for the publisher to use. It's an excellent book. It's well written, flowing, and well targeted at the issues that affect couples moving into the second half of life together. If you are moving into that time of life or know someone who is, I highly recommend this book. Scott Stanley University of Denver

High Five (A Stephanie Plum Novel) - book cover picture

Fans of this series have certain expectations, and Evanovich is smart enough to deliver. Our heroine is smart-mouthed and sexy (not one, but TWO incredibly handsome beefcakes are after her in this one), the supporting characters are...ahem..."colorful" might be the right word (colorful to the point of parody--not always intentional), and the plot is fast-paced and fun. Stephanie tends to stumble over clues and stumble out of dangerous situations, and the joy of this series is that none of the stumbling feels too contrived.Kudos to Evanovich for sticking to a winning formula--she knows, as do her readers, that the charm of the Stephanie Plum series is Stephanie herself, not the plot. The fact that the plot is quite good is just icing on the cake for mystery fans.

I bought 10 copies of this and passed it out to my friends.

A Circle of Quiet - book cover picture

When I first read this, I was a young mother, working full time and trying to get a master's degree! This book became my "Circle of Quiet" where I could slow down and remember what was important to me. When it came out in paperback, I dipped into the grocery money and bought 10 copies and gave it to every friend, saying "You've got to read this." Madeline L'Engle's way of sharing the magic and mystery of everyday life probably saved my sanity. It was like having an older "wise woman" friend to go to. I've always been grateful she was there when I needed her

When I first read this book, I was 13. It has become one of my favorite books since then. This year, I encouraged my best friend, Charity, to read it. She was very impressed with it as well. It's about... well, I shouldn't ruin the book for you. But read it anyways. It's really good. In fact, I guarantee this book will be your favorite. If you don't think so after you read it, you can send me your address andi will buy the book of you! hehehe.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right - book cover picture

Thank goodness Al Franken made this book humorous enough to keep me from crying over the way our country is being run. The book was delivered to me two days ago and I haven't been able to put it down. I know that partisanship is here to stay, and that you shouldn't believe everything you hear or read, but he backs up every allegation with proof. It's an easy read. More importantly, though, it's a necessary read for anyone who loves this country and wants to see it prosper.

Violin - book cover picture

This book is a must for music lovers, even though it was concentrating on the violin music, and I have a passion for piano music, the writers passion for the music came across brilliantly. Somehow, the story twice made me cry, something a book has never done before, I really felt as though I was one of the characters, more involved in the story than I have been with any other book. Its just a shame it had to end and I was expecting more in the ending, I guess I wanted it to never end.

The Bird Yard - book cover picture

Electrifying and unusual! The scope of the plot has depth and holds your interest until the last page. Having read "Likeness in Stone" and noting its unique approach, I could hardly wait to read her next book. I wasn't disappointed as this author has skillfully designed a wonderful, descriptive mystery that centers around a ritualistic use of beautiful birds,"finches", and the pursuit of young boys for sexual favors. Using a criminologist and a policeman to develop the bizare, sexual deviate's plot to kill the boys, you hang on every strand desperately hoping against hope that another boy is not an innocent victim. I have read all of Minette Walters' books and I rather think this author is better.

The Gate to Women's Country - book cover picture

I was amazed at some of the reviews I read for this book. I read this book (the first time..I've read it 5-6 times so far)all in one day - staying up all night. I then recommended it to my mother - who is not a fantasy/sci-fi fan- who loved it, and passed it on to my sister, and two aunts - all of whom are intelligent, open-minded women, and not man-haters!! For those who said it was anti-man, did you somehow skip the sections with the servitors (who, underneath the scenery were equal to the women)??? This book should be taught with The Handmaid's Tale in h.s. and college literature classes - not to show how evil men are, but how violence can overpower any society, often (but not always) with women paying the higher price.

a funny gangster story? read on....

Book title: Motherless Brooklyn
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Motherless Brooklyn - book cover picture

'Motherless Brooklyn' is certainly a refreshing novel. It's about young (and likeable) juvenile deliquents who grow up under the care of a gangster (..who calls himself a private investigator). When this gangster gets murdered these kids (now young men) need to finally do some real investigation work of their own. The reader is taken on a bizarre, and funny, journey involving Zen buddhism and murder. Great stuff.Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is that the narrator, one of the juvenile deliquents, has Tourette's Syndrome. This poor fellow has the uncontrollable urge to shout out (often rude and very funny) nonsense at absolutely the wrong moments. The author actually treats him with compassion rather than ridicule; I don't think sufferers of this condition will feel exploited.Bottom line: a thoroughly engaging read. Good story, great characterizations.
