The Awakening (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism) - book cover picture

The reader comments on this book illustrate a truth. Great literature rarely inspires a tepid response. This carefully drawn portrait of a young wife's awakening deserves comparison with Madame Bovary, but that, as well, was a sensational text, condemned by the readers of the day as inflammatory, condemned by modern readers as dull. The Awakening is an inspired and inspiring work. This book is full of symbolism and passion, and though the story is an eventually bleak one, it resonates with truth. This is a book about the pain of coming to life, and the power of inescapable maternal entanglement. Read it if you have an ear for beautiful language, a wise soul, and an active brain. If you prefer your truths to be merely pleasant, your endings to be tdily happy, and your grey matter to remain inert, leave The Awakening on the shelf.

Daughter of Fortune : A Novel (Oprah's Book Club (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

Isabel Allende has written an epic & enthralling adventure, populated with a cast of memorable & amusing characters, reminiscent of R. F. Delderfield's early sagas.Told against the magnificent landscapes of Chile & California, DAUGHTER OF FORTUNE tells the tale of two countries where the old ways & the new collide, mingle & give birth to entirely original citizens & stories, & of a young woman's search for her lost lover during the Gold Rush years.A good introduction to Isabel Allende's writing. Absorbing & informative & a pleasure to meet a resourceful heroine.

This book is so wonderful. Halfway through the book, I found myself looking furtively toward the end, not wanting to spoil the ending for myself but at the same time wanting to ensure that nothing horrible would happen to characters who already felt like dear friends. And I think that Eddie, even with his dark side, is just about the most perfect man I have ever heard of; I just really hope he (or some reasonable facsimile thereof) actually exists somewhere!

Pain Free : A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Chronic Pain - book cover picture

OK, so I'm in pain and willing to try anything for my neck. I did these simple positions. They are not stretches or exercize per say but rather poses for muscular realignment. Anyway, I did them this morning exactly as described. And I had no neck pain when I was done, 30 minutes later. I figured, ok, I distracted my neck for 10 or 15 minutes (which would be a miricle in itself), but I went without pain medication for almost 4 hours. I am going to do these every morning, and I don't commit to much!

The Rise of Professional Society: England Since, 1880 - book cover picture

One can hardly exaggerate the importance of this book in Historical research. This analysis of the mechanisms of Modern English society presents an original and suggesting view point about the industrialised world as a whole, one that seems to put together all the pieces Historians had gathered without knowing how to connect. Harold Perkin shows how the professional elites in both hemispheres have been shaping the world to their image, interests and ambitions, and what dangers this scenario brings with it. His theory overcomes the old-fashioned and limited concepts of capitalism and socialism that have hampered any progress in our understanding of the contemporary world and created myths that should no longer prevail. A must.

Best book I've read in ages!

More Than You Know: A Novel - book cover picture

This is my first Beth Gutcheon novel. I'm hooked. I read it well into the night, just didn't want to put it down and couldn't wait to find out what happened to Hannah and Conary. Gutcheon's characters take on a life of their own. You can feel their silent pain, their joys in knowing what it is to truly live. Gutcheon's ability to capture the family dynamics from all angles is amazing. She enabled the reader to actually feel sympathy for the unlikeliest of characters. This book was suspenseful and spooky! The ghostly hauntings are handled well -- well enough to make me wish I hadn't read until late into the night! The intertwined love story is icing on the cake. Enjoy!

The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body, and Design - book cover picture

Over the weekend I read the book cover to cover--reclining, standing, perching, squatting, even sitting (on the way to the dunes, in a properly reconstructed car seat). What an experience, and what a fabulous gift! I can't decide which was more gratifying: the seamless matching of extraordinary form with compelling content, or the subtly powerful way in which the restrained and tasteful prose mounts an actual sociocultural revolution.

forma biologica que tenemos permite que tambien seamos complicados en nuestro pensar y actuar , este complejo mecanismo biologico nos da la capacidad de la inteligencia

The Theory of Knowledge: Classic and Contemporary Readings - book cover picture

My thoughts are: This is a book worth buying in hardback. Save your money. It is comprehensive in its scope of the subject and it is also well organized. Perennial edition. A superb place to pick-up the subject. The articles are short and sweetly picked. All articles are complete reprints, not abridgements. Some of the essays include The Goodman article on "grue", The Gettier problem, Kripke, A.J.Ayer "The apriori" kant, Stawson, Plato and Stace. Easily the best catalogue of articles bound together on this subject so far. Yes, it's expensive. But for your money you get prime articles in a well typset book. Easy on the eye. It just saves time, and puts you in the spotlight of contemporary discussion on epistemology. Pity no radical or mystical aspects.

At first I thought this was going to be another good guys on planet and evil bad guys come rushing in. Kenson suprised me. After I read through about 40 to 50 pages I couldn't put the book down. It was suspensful while entertaining, with of course a brilliant story line. The ending was also awesome (though I won't spoil it for anyone who hasen't read it yet), though it pretty stereo typical. Anyway, awesome book to start off a new series, if you haven't got. GET IT.
