Seven Up (A Stephanie Plum Novel) - book cover picture

I had to give this book five stars--even though the ending leaves you in killer suspence, just like the last two books. No other books make me laugh out loud or shake my head in disbelief like the Stephanie Plumb series. Who else could have such bad but good luck? After all it's tough to chose between Joe Morelli and Ranger (we should all be so "unlucky.)If you are worried that you don't have time to read this book- stop worrying, it took me slightly over 24 hours (yes, I work.) It's easy to read and you don't want to put it down because you want to find out what happens with Grandma Mazeur, where Dougie and Mooner are, if Bob the dog will really eat a couch, what Ranger's next move is, and how far will the wedding actually progress. Not to worry, it all turns out good with all the usual (ruined cars, Steph's mom ironing, her apartament getting broken into), and unusual stuff, which I won't tell here in this review, becaue that's what makes the book so much fun (smile.)...

Skeleton Key - book cover picture

Jane Haddam does her usual brilliant job weaving the personal story of Bennis and Gregor (amazingly, finally together), crime and puzzle, with her real life sharply observant eye on human acts, human motives. Like a Japanese brush painter, she captures an essence in a few strokes. Litchfield county debs and country club denizens and old money and old money wannabe's and a Litchfield county women who doesn't have any money to be sick. Murders happen that couldn't and in the midst of it, Bennis gets sick.... Read it.

Rousing Spanish-style fantasy--nice break from the Celts!

The Curse of Chalion - book cover picture

Cazaril is a terrific central character, with all the aches and pains of a thirty-odd-year old over-resigned to his mortality after his escape from years of brutal hardship. An excellent portrayal of honor--and the prices and rewards. Normally I don't go for over-determined religion in my fantasy, but here Bujold makes it work, even sing. The texture of the countryside is well done--I could have used a little more, but that's not where Bujold puts her focus. This book is sure to sweep up many of the SF & F rewards this year--it's that strong in what was sadly, in 2001, a somewhat weak year.

Challenger's Hope (Seafort Saga) - book cover picture

This book is addictive! I could not leave it.
"Riveting" is used for a lot of reviews on books but this book is what the word was made for.It had me in tears-from sadness and from laughter, had me rooting for the characters and argueing with the author. In many books, I am able to guess where the story is going and what is going to happen next. I was completely surprised many a time with Challenger's Hope. I had read the first of the series and it was good but this one is GREAT! I highly recommend reading this! But make sure you have no pressing commitments coming up because you won't want to put it down!!<P

A Clash of Kings - book cover picture

When I picked up the first book in a "yeah, yeah, yeah, allright ..." kind of way, I did not expect to be drawn in quite so thoroughly. The second book has certainly proved NO disappointment. I like the many levels of emotion he evokes, ranging through empathy, sympathy, admiration and pure disgust. Even his heroes are flawed (thank goodness) and the dear Imp - well, you don't know whether to be for him or against him, because of how it may impact other characters with whom you may empathize in the story. Plenty of loose ends to keep us impatient for Volumes 3 and ......

Another great work by Bradbury!

Book title: The Martian Chronicles
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Martian Chronicles - book cover picture

Even under the guise of a sci-fi book, this book, as other reviewers have pointed out along with the editorials, it is a comment on humanity it the human condition. Even to the point of Man bringing his fears and strong desires to Mars and, after "conquering" the Martians, becoming "Martians" himself. A great work, just like the other sci-fi works I own and love, both new and old: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "Foundation", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, as well as books as new to the genre as "Advent of the Corps" and others.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator - book cover picture

The book Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was a great and funny book. I admired it because the author of this book made it seem like you were in the place that you were reading about. It was a sequel to the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Most of the book took place in outer space. I thought that this book was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone. That is why I gave this book 5 stars.

Excellent Study Bible

Book title: NRSV Harper Study Bible

NRSV Harper Study Bible - book cover picture

The first study Bible I owned was the _Harper Study Bible_ in the RSV. That was almost 25 years ago and I still have it! I have a leather one too, the first one I bought was a hardback. This edition is quite good. Lindsell expanded some of the notes and it uses the NRSV text, a very, very good translation of the Bible. The font is a nice size and it reads across the page with excellent cross references in the margins. I use this Bible every time I study for sermons and Bible studies. Any person interested in studying the Bible in depth should consider adding this Bible to their study shelf.
