The Society (Palmer, Michael) - book cover picture

Having read all of Michael Palmer's previous novels, I have to say that this is his best yet. The touchy subject of HMOs is covered by citing examples of the ridiculous excuses HMOs give for not covering certain claims. The hero doctor & heroine cop
are put in exciting & dangerous situations that are made truly believable by Palmer's excellent writing skills. I was upset when the story came to an end, because I wanted to keep reading this exciting story. Can't wait for his next novel.

A Moving Book

Inside the Vicious Heart: Americans and the Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps - book cover picture

This was an interesting view of the horrors of the holocaust. I think there is better works that detail out what happened in the camps, but this book really gives you the insight into what it was like to roll through the gates of the camp in an American jeep. You almost can feel the chain of emotions the solders go through: confusion, anger, pity, and sadness. This must also be in some small part what the current American solders see in Afghanistan with millions starving. This is a well-written, very unique look at the topic and is well worth the price. You will "feel" this book for a long time after you have finished it.

The Best I've Come Across.

Book title: Crime Scene
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Crime Scene - book cover picture

This is the best of its type I've come across. I'm impressed. However the author doesnt address how you cope with idiots, and the system is filled with idiots: who run amok over the crime scene, destroying evidence; experts who know little or nothing about what they profess, severely damaging investigations; and political pressure to make certain outcomes likely. People get highly annoyed when your report is contrary to their bias and expectations. And newbie judges and lawyers. They arent scientists and they arent detectives, and they are arrogantly clueless when it comes to much of what you discover. This book is well-written, the author knows his stuff, and it's interesting.

Prater Violet - book cover picture

I reread this lovely novel earlier this year. In a way, it's better than Berlin Stories because of its conciseness and the humor is more sophisticated. What had been funny looms like familiar smells over everything when history steps in. I laughed so much and felt so much as I read and that is the reason why we must keep reading Isherwood and slowing down time so that we can perceive when one is being amusing or humble or genuine, without artifice.

A modern Arthurian romance.

The Savage Damsel and the Dwarf (The Squire's Tales) - book cover picture

Lady Lynet, younger sister of the beautiful Lyonesse, finds that her castle is besieged by a fierce, recreant knight who is determined to have Lyonesse's hand in marriage. So, Lynet mounts a horse, determined to go to Camelot and beg King Arthur to send a knight to rescue them. Along the way, she falls in with a dwarf named Roger, a man of very little fighting ability. At Camelot, no knight will take up her cause, but only a kitchen knave, name Beaumains. Together, the three head back towards Cornwall. In the rest of the book, Lynet learns that there is more to the people around her than meets the eye. This book was quite entertaining, and is written in an easy to read style. I really enjoyed the way it began to spin off surprise after surprise late in the book. I have not read any other of Gerald Morris' other books, but I now intend to!For the purists, this novel does not portray a "realistic" Fifth Century Arthur, but is an example of a High Medieval, chivalric Arthur.

Portrait of Hemingway (Modern Library (Paperback)) - book cover picture

This slim volume covering a mere two days with Hemingway will take about an hour or two to read. However, it's merit is that it is presents us with a 'bird's eye-view' of Hemingway's later years, the alcholism, his relationship with his wife Mary, his son, and some of his old friends. It also gives us a glimpse of his feelings about his writing in his own words. For those who have enjoyed Hemingway's fiction and read biographies of his life, this book is a must.

Culinary Arts Institute Encyclopedia Cookbook - book cover picture

A friend owns the original hardback version from the mid 1900's. It has just about everything dealing with the prospect of cooking/ entertaining. I have used this book and find that all of my loved ones should have it for themselves. It truly goes full circle on this field. Now I want to get copies for myself. Unfortunately, the hard bound (a possible heirloom; longer lasting) seems to be impossible to find. Therefore I will pick up the soft covers and have the covers laminated for durability.I can't promise the new edition is as complete as the original.

Historic Power Gambit. A Story That Needs to be Remembered

Book title: The Walls of Jericho : Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Richard Russell and the Struggle for Civil Rights

The Walls of Jericho : Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Richard Russell and the Struggle for Civil Rights - book cover picture

This truly is a monumental period of American history - ending segregation and giving blacks the right to vote. It was often violent. It took a few timely events and the masterful skills of a handful of people to make this happen, like LBJ. Hubert Humphrey must be recognized as one of America's most important leaders. When he died, Humphrey was lain in state with the ceremonial honors of a president. It's no surprise that the airport, stadium, and University of Minnesota government campus in Minnesota, among others, are named after Humphrey.Yet this story is also told in a balanced way. You get to know the characters and why they move as they do.Read this for the fascinating drama... and the history.

Book title: Declare

Declare - book cover picture

If you read Tim Powers, then you expect a lot from him. Declare delivers. Like Anubis Gates, this is a work of magical realism based on actual historic events. That underpinning of history gives the work an eerie versimilitude that is engaging and challenging at the same time. Powers, true to form, takes a very different angle on the "true" reasons behind several pivotal historical events of our times. The book is a deftly executed and cleanly plotted and will hook you in the first paragraph and keep you guessing while you are running to keep up. Get it now.

Graham's Poems, not Halpern's

Book title: Selected Poems

Selected Poems - book cover picture

Contrary to the editorial review above, this volume contains selected poems by W.S. Graham, and not by this Halpern character at all. It is an adequate selection of Sydney Graham's poetry, containing the full text of 'The Nightfishing", his key modernist poem, selections from the 'Letters' and all the best known later poems - 'Malcolm Mooney's Land', 'Clusters Travelling Outward', etc.Nothing to do with Halpern, I promise.
