Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf - book cover picture

This book is a masterpiece. Dante et al begins by dispelling a multitude of golf's most common misconceptions and maligning advice. Each myth is expounded upon nicely so that there are no doubts as to why these time-tested pearls are mostly or dead wrong. This whole first section cleans the slate so that you're primed for the real matter.
The manner in which this book is written and illustrated are first class. I've never read a golf book more descriptive, concise and correct! The reading is easy and the instruction intelligent and bold. There will be no doubt in your mind on how the swing should be conducted. Don't be dissuaded by original date of publishing... as stated above, it is timeless.
If you're looking for a profound book that's not overly technical, easily understood, true and tested, this is it!

Isaac's Storm : A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History - book cover picture

This is a wonderful book about the 1900 Galveston (TX) Hurricane, the deadliest in U.S. history. This book gives a detailed account of Isaac Cline, the chief meteorologist in Galveston at the time who initially agrees with the other forcasts, by the time it is too late, he realizes that the hurricane is headed straight for Galveston. He tries to send out the alert but is largely ignored. This book combines accurate and deatailed weather history with a personal touch.

The importance of reading these plays!

The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

While Oscar Wilde is not Shakespeare unarguably the best playwright, he is incredibly good and all three plays show it. Salome is a short 'biblical' play, Lady Windermere's Fan is a bit longer and with the exception of the naivete suffered by the Lady of the title incredibly well written as well. However, The Importance of Being Earnest is by far the best play in this collection. Two men whom are trying to get away with pulling a fast one on their girlfriends and two women who think they know whats going on. Throw in a misplaced bag with a baby inside, an overbearing British matriarch, and a Governess with a past and you have a laugh out loud comedy. Who knew the British could be so funny...when written about anyway.

Leading a Software Development Team: A Developer's Guide to Successfully Leading People and Projects - book cover picture

I bought this because I am starting to lead a software team, without any training, I just find myself in charge of 3 people. This book helped me see where I'm getting it right and where there are things I can do better. It's quite short and I read about 3 chapters each day on the train in about 15 minutes. I would have liked a little more about recruitement and also about making presentations because these are things I need immediate help with, what's in the book is OK but I would have liked more e.g. list of questions for interviewees. Overall well worth the money.

Book title: Absolute Friends

Absolute Friends - book cover picture

The shrill cries of "anti-American" written by other reviewers do not do justice to this well-thought out book. I love John LeCarre, and this book ranks among my favorites. He tracks the longtime friendship between a foreign-born Brit and an East German, both of whom were shaped by the traumas of their youth. On its own merits, the book is an excellent character study of not one but two characters. I enjoyed it tremendously. But, and this is more important to me, it made me think a lot more of the recent US policies, which have become increasingly arrogant. I am not a leftist but LeCarre is angry in his book and as I read it I felt myself becoming disturbed as well as he made me look at recent events in a different light. For that I would like to give this book 6 stars if I could. LeCarre fans will enjoy this book, and if you have not read LeCarre you might want to start with this one as it really shows him at his best.

Rewarding experience,a wonderful read.

The Name of the Rose - book cover picture

My sister who just graduated from college convinced me to read The Name of the Rose. It was my first book by Eco, (she has read Island of the Day Before and Foucault's Pendulum). I enjoyed this book immensely. As the reader you become wrapped into the lives of the monks. I had to read this book in one night because it was so fascinating that I couldn't put it down. The only problem that I had with the book was the lack of translations for the Latin phrases. However that intrigued me if anything and I plan on finding out the translations for a better understanding. I next plan on reading Foucault's Pendulum as it was the only other Exo book that my library has. The Name of the Rose has become one of my favorite books. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a challenge.

Days of Honey, Days of Onion: The Story of a Palestinian Family in Israel - book cover picture

Wonderful book. Gives a very insightful summary of the history of Israel from an Arab perspective on a personal scale. The author envelopes you into the story of one ordinary family's life from life in the British mandate through the beginning of the Intifadah. As well as being a description of Arab life within Israel, this book also provides interesting material about the life of small-scale agriculturalists in Arabia.

Zodiac - book cover picture

This book was great! I was somewhat worried about the way it was written- sort of like a novel more than a factual account of the Zodiac killings, but it read really well. It was engrossing, to the point where I spent entire days anxious to get home from work and read on. The books was well researched and in my opinion, the definitive book on the Zodiac Killer, who was never identified and captured. I highly recommend this book to any true crime buff, or anyone interested in one of the most enigmatic serial killings in history.

Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman!: Adventures of a Curious Character - book cover picture

I first bought this book way back in 1988 - an abridged version in a magazine had me intrigued. A book that chronicles the life of a genius in short humourous incidents - it would be too simple to call them anecdotes - sets you wondering about life. Feynman makes Physics seem fun and obtainable to everyone. He takes his genius for granted and sees nothing extraordinary in it. In fact he refers to Einstein and other famous scientists as "monster minds" - totally unaware that he belongs to the same category. An unusual style for an autobiography, "Surely You're joking..." will have you reading and laughing and get you curious...

A Year in the Maine Woods - book cover picture

Bernd Heinrich does a spectacular job of compliling his experiences of spending a year in the Maine woods into a book.
This professor shows you in his journal how he explores the woods of Maine around his cabin, which is not equipped with running water or electricity.
Mr. Heinrich mentions everything from the pet raven he partly-raised to his encounter with a majestic moose that crossed his path. Other birds, insects, plants and animals that he finds on his daily walks through the remote and beautiful Maine woods are also widely mentioned. He clearly describes the flute-like song of the Hermit Thrush, the chirping of the crickets, the eerie howling of the coyotes, and much, much more.
This book is interesting and easy-to-read for nature lovers and casual observers alike who enjoy serene nature with a touch of civilization here and there.
I recommend this book and hope that Mr. Heinrich will come out with another book as good as this one soon!
