Give Me a Break : How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media... - book cover picture

If you like the works of Ayn Rand, and you watch Stossel on 20/20, you'll love this. Terrific common-sense approach to the issues Americans are faced with every day. I admire Stossel and his viewpoints- particularly about private industry doing things better than government ever could. Also, despite what some liberals might like to believe after seeing the cover, this book does not bash liberals. The author simply makes the point that New York liberals live in a vacuum where conservative ideas such as his are frowned upon. In summary, well worth the money.

excellent coverage of randomization and resampling

Randomization, Bootstrap and Monte Carlo Methods in Biology, Second Edition - book cover picture

Manly is an excellent writer who has written several excellent texts and is an editor of a biostatistics journal. This is a revision of a very popular text on randomization or permutation methods. Because of the immense popularity of bootstrap methods (a similar resampling procedure), he elected to add some coverage of the bootstrap. All topics are covered in a clear and scholarly style and examples from biology are given. The interested reader might also look at Good (2000), Permutation Methods, 2nd Edition, published by Springer-Verlag and Edgington, Randomization Tests published by Marcel Dekker for other accounts on permutation tests. There are now several good books dedicated to bootstrap methods including Davison and Hinkley (1997), Cambridge University Press, Efron and Tibshirani (1993), CRC-Chapman and Hall and Chernick (1999), John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Fantastic like the movie!

The Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure - book cover picture

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies so I decided to read the book. Even knowing the plot, this was one of my favorite books in years. Here is what you get if you already saw the movie: Goldman's short story about abridging the S. Morgenstern classic, more history on Inigo and Fezzik, a different scene when Inigo and Fezzik attempt to reach Wesley in the Pit of Despair (the Zoo in the book), and more on Buttercup falling in love with Wesley. It was all well worth reading.

Weekend (Point) - book cover picture

After reading Slumber Party first, I was itching to see another story similar to it. I saw "Weekend" and thought this is it. I read it non-stop and although I was only 12 at the time it was still the best book. At the end I could not sit still because it scared me so much. I paced and walked all over the house while finishing it. It was truly suspenseful and a true thriller to me. After a year I bought it, having to read it again. I hope to see yet another like it or possibly a sequel to this fabulous book. It was scary yet had a good ending. It was, in short, some of his best work

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right - book cover picture

Al Franken takes the unpleasantness of politics and makes it entertaining. Along the way he illustrates the tactics of several popular right-wing hacks and delves into the legitimacy of their claims. Occasionally, Al's supporting arguments are weak and he substitutes humor instead. But, that appears to be his point: to illustrate how unsubstantiated arguments can be supported by pulling the reader/listener off-track. The majority of his points and topics are well thought out, well reasoned and will change the way you view talk radio, Fox News and the supposedly-liberal media. A discerning eye towards what we are being told will help weed out the B.S. thrown our way from now thru Nov. 2nd.

Waiting for The Rain (Laurel Leaf Books) - book cover picture

This book is the chil's version of Alan Paton's classic Cry, The Beloved Country. It is about two friends, Tengo and Frikkie. Frikkie is a Boer and Tengo is descended from the African tribes. But as they grow older, apartheid changes their lives. Tengo goes to Johannaesburg to study and Frikkie enters the army. Frikkie wants eberything to be the same and Tengo wants change. I won't tell the rest. All in all, it is a riveting book about the social prejudices of South Africa.

Noah Webster : The Life and Times of an American Patriot - book cover picture

In his preface, the author notes that Noah Webster is so famous for his dictionary that it's overshadowed his many other achievements. Too true! I was amazed to learn of Mr. Webster's achievements in politics and education reform, particularly the influential role he played in shaping the U.S. Constitution. This book is a Must Read for anyone who wants a deeper and more accurate view into early American history.

The inauthentic man

Book title: The Stranger
Rating: 5/5

The Stranger - book cover picture

Camus's hero, Mersault, is a lost man, a stranger in the society he inhabits. He knows nothing and cares for nothing but himself. At his mother's funeral, he finds it impossible to show emotion. But in one premeditated gesture of self-liberation, a gesture by which he breaks the social bonds that submerge his individuality, he kills an Arab on the shore - in cold blood and seemingly for no reason - by firing five shots into him and thus fully realising and concretising himself as an authentic being in control of himself. This is the premise of the novel, an existential classic, on a par with Kafka's "The Trial".

Oracle Developer/2000 Forms - book cover picture

I have never written a review on this book before, although I bought it almost 4 years ago. I see nothing wrong with this book. The author took his time creating all the data needed in the book and also giving you the option of loading the data by either copying and pasting or spooling the file already created for you.
The book was precise and very detailed for beginners, intermediate and advance users for quick reference. I have finished building the first application three times without any bias mind. I have four books on Form and this is the only one that takes you from the scratch to finish with a standard, working, well built application . THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!!!

Imaginative, Silly and Timeless

Book title: Where the Sidewalk Ends : Poems and Drawings

Where the Sidewalk Ends : Poems and Drawings - book cover picture

Sometimes I'll lay in bed before work and I'll recite in my head a poem I learned when I was 10 - I can not go to school today said little Peggy Anne McKay. I have the measles and the mumps, a gash, a rash and purple bumps... - and to this day I still retrieve my old copy of Where the Sidewalk Ends and read through Mr. Silverstein's compilation of poems. I will never tire of his genius musings and look forward to sharing them with my children, grandchildren, etc. I'm buying the audio format along with the book for my baby goddaughter for Christmas so that she can listen to Mr. Silverstein's voice narrating his wonderful collection, then read along when she gets old enough. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something imaginative, silly and timeless.
