Jovah's Angel (Ace Science Fiction) - book cover picture

Ms. Shinn continues the wonderful romance in this follow up novel to Archangel. Now, she answers more questions about the founding of Samaria, this time with a curious two-Archangel setting. Again, opposites, who find two men they both come to love, who are close, but still have thier differences. The writer can put anything together and make it work! So inspiring! I can't wait to get the next book!

The Real Thing

A Painted Field - book cover picture

Rarely does one find the magisterial artistic command so evident in this book in any poetry collection--let alone in the first collection of a "new" poet. Robertson is no joke: not even the initial reviews on this website (glowing as they are) can do him anything like justice. Here appear poems that require reading, and that don't stand much discussion. That (for me) is what real works of art are like: they want to conjure up not ideas about the thing, but the thing itself.I can't wait for the next book from this man. This is, by a very long shot, the best thing I've read in a while--in any discipline.

The Shadow of the Wind - book cover picture

I raced through this book without giving any thought to it being a translation. Wonderful writing with a great cast of characters, particularly Fermin Romero de torres, bibliographic adviser to the Sempere bookshop! I liked his turn of the phrase and expressions so much I felt like picking up a highlighter to capture them. If you enjoy novels and historical fiction I think you will be in for a treat.

The most intensive Tom Clancy novel since "Red October"!!!

Book title: The sum of all fears
Rating: 5/5

The sum of all fears - book cover picture

This is one of Tom Clancy's best works yet. He shows that he can be a progressive writer, by showing us a different look at the heroic Jack Ryan. I am very impressed with the sheer intensity of this book. There is a line in the book that is used to describe DefCon ONE and I think it applys to the feel of the book. It basicly says that the Americans and the Russians have their guns out and they're pointed at each other and the saftey's off and their finger is on the trigger feeling its preasure. I have yet to read the next in the Jack Ryan series, but I am looking forward to it.

The closest thing to a perfect book I've read in a long time

Book title: Secret History : A Novel
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Secret History : A Novel - book cover picture

This book is simply mindblowing. The phrase "it will chnage your life" is often over used, but it fits this book perfectly. This is not to say that you'l drop your life and head to New England to study Greek, but you'll look at the world differently as you read the book. Think of the money you spend on it as an investment. I read it at least once a year and pass it on to my friends. Read it on a cloudy winter day and you can see yourself shivering in a warehouse with Richard. A brisk fall day and the leaves literally crackle under your feet. After I read the book I found myself identifying my friends as Bunnies, Henries, Richards, Francises, Charleses, and Camillas. If you finish this book and don't drop your jaw in amazement you've done something wrong.

A Very good Book

Book title: Cloak of Deception (Star Wars)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Cloak of Deception (Star Wars) - book cover picture

Unlike most of the other Star Wars books, this book has a lot more politics in it. Not nearly as much action as the Rogue Squadron or Thrawn books. There is a lot of debates and things like that, so this might not be the best for you. It does have some Episode II spoilers in it so that can be another drawback to it.
Along with the poltics that are in the book, there is a lot of action from the Jedi, Obi Wan and Qui Gon. They fought both on the ground and in space, making the book interesting. It flows well from scene to scene and expecially at the end, where it links up with Episode I and Shadow Hunters. Another good thing is that there are lots of cameos around in it. Jorus C'Boath(From the Thrawn Books)and Governor Tarkin for example. And there is the things between Palpatine and Valorum, and how they interact with each other. Over all, a good read, one that introduces a new view on the pre-movies era of Star Wars.

Quietly beautiful

Book title: No Great Mischief
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
No Great Mischief - book cover picture

So I've been accused by my friends of liking less-than-cheery novels, and this book would help cement my reputation. That said, this is a beautiful novel that is quietly and carefully written. McLeod's spare writing style is very evocative of the stark Cape Breton landscape and the generally taciturn nature of the Scottish clan who lives there. But the author also has the rare ability to write a few sentences that carry enormous emotional weight, then leaves well enough alone. But somehow the brevity of the writing only deepens the impact of what he's just told you. And if you're like me and a total putz for any story that includes canine loyalty symbolism, you can't beat this book. I won't give anything away, just read it.

A True Masterpiece

Ballad of Frankie Silver - book cover picture

Being a native of western North Carolina, and having grown up around the legend of Frankie and Charley Silver, the title of the book itself intrigued me. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. McCrumb managed to intermingle fact and fiction into a brilliant piece of writing, without confusion, which is no easy task for any writer. She has obviously done her homework in regard to Frankie Silver, and the cover of the book was the piece de resistance. I have personally been to this gravesite, and it continues to be an eerie place.McCrumb is a masterful writer and if this is any indication, her future is even brighter than anticipated.

Linda Goodman's Love Signs : A New Approach to the Human Heart - book cover picture

I discovered Linda's Sun Signs first. I read it and was completely amazed by its content. Up until that time I had been a complete skeptic. I then discovered Love Signs and it probably has been the most helpful book I have read on the subject of relationships. She is such a great writer and truly has a gift. I have given her book to all of my friends, and they still thank me for it. Do yourself a favor, buy the book, read the book. You won't be disappointed.
