Acting Strangely: A Funny Kind of Life - book cover picture

Loved Martin Jarvis's acting stories. It's a lesson to some of us who might have thought, in our dreams, that it's all champagne and roses. This elegant Brit warns that it ain't as easy as he and some of his fellow performers make it look - life on stage and screen can be full of downs as well as ups. Jarvis's sense of adventure makes the book a page-turning treat. His Hollywood tales are nothing short of compelling, not to say hilarious. And I have never read a better account of what it is like to be on stage in some of London's most noted theatres. A beautifully written autobiography, bursting with fun, information and wise thoughts about acting. I recently had a good time in the theatre watching this British star play the title role in the Lloyd Webber/Ayckbourn 'By Jeeves, on its way to Broadway. Look out NYC. Will Jarvis be writing about his adventures on the Great White Way? Hope so.

Freak The Mighty (Scholastic Signature) - book cover picture

Freak the Mighty was a great book for kids of all ages to read. The two boys in it include Max and Kevin, who both have different disabilities, and they end up becoming best friends because they each have something the other one needs. Max, who is huge, needs to be smart and Kevin, who is a genius and physically unable to walk on his own, wants to be able to walk around normally. They join together and become Freak the Mighty. They have many interesting adventures together and even saved each others life. This book teaches lots of lessons like even if it feels like the world is against you, there is still a friend out there you can count on. This is an excellent book and I recommend everyone to read it.

Ben Hogan : An American Life - book cover picture

Finally a book that lets you see the golfer and the man more clearly than ever before. This is simply a great read about a complex and driven individual. Having been a Hogan "nut" for many years, this book is a close as we will ever get to him. It is also extremely well-written and I hated for the story to end. Not just for golf fanatics, this is a biography about an American who lived the dream.

A Prayer for Owen Meany - book cover picture

Character development and the prose to make those characters live and breathe in my mind are tributes I have felt I owed to John Irving from the time I read The World According to Garp and Cider House overshadowed by A Prayer for Owen Meany. The actors who take on the challenge of bringing OWEN and Johnny to life in the upcoming film will have their hands full with these two boys as Irving has created them on paper.

Aristophanes and Athens: An Introduction to the Plays - book cover picture

For anyone who is new to the crude and seemingly inaccessible humour of Aristophanes, this book should come as a blessing. Not only does it give detailed analysis of the political background necessary to appreciate the clever allegories, but acquaints the general reader with the overall messages of Aristophanes' plays that can be outrageously funny and clever. Arisophanes and Athens is very accessible, and sheds light on literature over 2000 years old that is surprisingly relevant to our society today.

The First America : The Spanish Monarchy, Creole Patriots and the Liberal State 1492-1866 - book cover picture

D. A. Brading is an authoritative scholar in Spanish American studies. His main focus is in the Mexican past and he has definately earned the respect of his collegues and those intrested in history world-wide. This book gives an impressionable account od Latin America, from the rise of the Spanish Empire and the development of Spanish colonialism to the the effective end of imperial control in the late nineteenth century. The Spanish empire and system of colonization differs greatly from English and even Portugese systems and further reading will illustrate that. Many scholars believe it explains the difficult experience of state building of the Latin American states during the nineteenth century. If you'd like more knowledge about the Spanish American past, this book is a definate must read.

A History of Knowledge : Past, Present, and Future - book cover picture

I've really enjoyed reading this book. No, it's not a truly unbiased historical account but I've appreciated his fair treatment of the subjects that have gripped mankind for centuries. This book gives you a great deal of information, and yet Van Dorn manages to capture it in a story telling format so that you can ingest it easily. Not a page turner, but not a book you'll set aside after chapter 3 either.

The Lover's Tarot : For Affairs of the Heart - book cover picture

These luxurious cards deserve high praise. The collector-quality deck is extra large and richly appointed with renaissance-style art. Like many tarot readers this deck uses only the 22 Major Arcana cards. All names and numbers are classic tarot. The guide book is a full-color hardback. It's informative and includes added insight about the seeker's lover. The package is well-thought out, right down to the box's classy ribbon tie.

An excellent companion to Calculus

Book title: Schaum's Outline of Calculus
Rating: 5/5

Schaum's Outline of Calculus - book cover picture

I found this book to be a very good supplement to anyone taking a calculus course. The main highlights (and some, but few) lowlights are as follows:The Good:
1. LOTS and LOTS of topics covered ranging from limit concepts to l'Hopital's rule to integral tests to multiple integrals, this book covers A LOT (and even a brief intro to differential equations.)2. Enough practice problems to ensure that the reader will comprehend the material (as is the case with most Schaum Outline books).3. Lots of graphs for visual learners.4. A fraction of the price of most calculus books. The Bad:
1. The only bad thing I could possibly think of in this book is that it explains vector concepts and differentiation and integration of vector functions and gradient, divergence, and curl, but leaves out Green's and Stokes' theorems (must be covered in the vector analysis Schaum book). For more detail, check out the list of chapter topics on the back cover of the book (it's a pretty thick paragraph)
