One of the funniest books ever written

Negrophobia: An Urban Parable - book cover picture

In one passage of Negrophobia, the rotting corpse of Malcolm X (referred to as "the rotting corpse of Malcolm X")does the "Time Warp" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and each occasion of "time warp" is replaced with "swine pork". This book is full of similar hilariously bloodthirsty satires. The humor is very offensive (to most races I can think of) and will have you either gasping in horror or rolling on the floor. The comedy value of this book is extraordinary, but there's much more to it as well: it is genuinely insightful, original and provoking when it comes to the philosophy and history of race relations in America.

Beautiful illustrations, plot a bit mystifying

Book title: Alphabet Mystery

Alphabet Mystery - book cover picture

My 3 1/2 year old nephew loves this book. Little "x" is missing, and his alphabet friends fly off on a pencil to find him. X feels neglected in the real world, and he has found a home playing the xylophone for the "M" master. X's alphabet friends convince him to come home where he becomes the "X" kisses on mother's birthday cake. I'm pretty sure that most of this went right over my nephew's head, but he loves the bright colors, knew "X" was the missing letter, and enjoyed counting the kisses at the end. And and we both loved the illustrations!

A hilarious satire of American politics and journalism

Why Not Me? : The Inside Story Behind the Making and the Unmaking of the Franken Presidency - book cover picture

No one is spared in Al Franken's riotously funny WHY NOT ME?, least of all Franken himself. The former Saturday Night Live actor/writer skewers campaigns, candidates and constituants (and names names) but makes himself the biggest fool of them all. Anyone who has ever been associated with a political campaign, or who has taken the time to study the way candidates atttempt to deliver messages and capitalize on people's fears or prejudices, will find Franken's take on campaigns American style to be dead on. The upside of the Clinton years is that they paved the way for this book that had me laughing out loud on nearly every page.I don't blame P.J. O'Rourke for his mostly negative review in NYT. He has good reason to be envious. If PJ hangs in there, perhaps he'll someday write political satire that is this accessible and funny.

Perloo is not a mouse!

Perloo The Bold - book cover picture

Perloo the bold is a great book and I just want to let you know if you read a review that came before mine and it said that Perloo is a mouse, that is so wrong. Perloo is a motmer, a rabbit-like creature with long ears, whiskers, and big feet. Jolaine asked Perloo to be the Grantor and she gave him the proclamation that he was to be Grantor. Berwig rips the proclomation in half and sends his guards to kill Perloo. From then on it's an epic chase which involves Perloo falling into a Felbart cave and trying to get them to help him. I would just like to say again that Perloo is a great book.

Poignant Tale about Loss

Book title: Blackberries in the Dark
Rating: 5/5

Blackberries in the Dark - book cover picture

Probably the best young children's book on the subject of a death in the family.Very beautifully written, tears will almost definitely flow from the adult reading it. One might then ask, why bother with this book if it's about death, a heavy subject my kid hasn't been exposed to? Well, actually, it is a very uplifting story about life itself. No psychobabble or religious references, just a simple story of family, bonds, and tradition. Jukes' writing is beautifully crafted, making this simple story very meaningful. Death itself is dealt with matter-of-factly, and there is nothing scary in the book.Though tinged with sadness, it is truly wonderful, and there are even a couple of good laughs. (Like life itself, no?)Highly recommended.

I love all of Joyce's books, but this one was over the top intriguing and one of my favorites. Being an avid herbalist and fascinated with all things magical and mysterious, I found it all the more mesmerizing. I've never read an author who creates such believable, true-to-life female characters. The plot was tight, mysterious and fast-moving. You don't really read Joyce's books, you tumble headlong into them and awaken in another realm altogether. I've been reading books for 45 years and I've never read another author quite like him. I highly recommend all of his books. He's a bit like Alice Hoffman on mushrooms...

The Mexican Tree Duck - book cover picture

C.W. Sughrue is a drunken, dope addict, washed up private detective, and this guy is no Spencer or Elvis Cole. But, just one of the most exciting P.I.s to come out of the mind of a writer. I thought I had read all the really good mystery/thriller authors, I was wrong, James Crumley is one of the best(top five in my book). This book is one you hate to put down and you look forward to the next one by Crumley. This book is a double thumbs up, must read. Be warned it is raw, hard driving, dope dealing, sexy, and outstanding.

Flowers for Algernon: In this beloved novel-the basis for the - book cover picture

I read this book when I was in high school, about ten years ago, and I've had flashbacks ever since. Keyes gives insights to society's treatment of the mentally disabled, and its respect and fear of the very intelligent. Even more fascinating, he lets us explore the emotions that would follow a sudden increase in intelligence, and then its just-as-sudden loss. One part that stick out in my mind is near the end of the book, when the main character looks at his foreign language books. He had formerly read them fluently, but now he can't make heads of tails of them... "All gone." I've identified with this phrase more times than I can count!

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas - book cover picture

I have been an avid reader of James Patterson's books for a long time. I purchase his books without even reading the jacket. You just KNOW it is going to be a great read. I was not sure what to expect when I purchased this book. A James Patterson romance? I was intrigued. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I read it in one evening. Although I had read reviews saying it was a tear jerker, I did not expect the emotions that came over me towards the conclusion of the book. It was truly touching. Hooray for James Patterson! Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!
