One of the best photo essays by a true master of the medium!

Consta is one of the best photographer/printers of the day. His willingness to not only capture the moment to convey feeling, but to take great strides in the darkroom to further his view is a rarity nowadays. This additional emphasis is evident in all of this Magnum photographer's work, but most so in "A Greek Portfolio". He uses a minimum of equipment, yet achieves a height of awareness in this monograph not present elsewhere. If one has the chance to see the original prints on display, do so!

Great Book

I got interested in this book by first reading "Look For Me By The Moonlight". After that book I fell in love with Mary Hahn's books. I'm right in the middle of "The Wind Blows Backward" and I can't put it down. I love the way Mary shows reality to the characters. The unusual relationship between Spencer and Lauren is remarkably realistic in any couple these days. The shy Lauren trys and trys harder each time to ease the troubled Spencer's pain. With sex, drugs, and achohol, this book may be inappropriate for any one under 10-years-old. This book will keep you hanging off your seat reading page after page.

Politically and culturally enlightening . . .
Rating: 5/5

I finished this book feeling just a little more connected to an Africa about which I've only been able to fantasize. This book sings to your heart with prose that is rhythmic and satiating, delicious to the eyes and savory to the tongue. For me, the only thing that could possibly top "Auntie's" writing is her speaking. In a voice that booms with quietness, Maya stokes and caresses, calms and enlightens. I've never had a disappointing experience with her autobiographical work or poetry. She's simply wonderful.

Annie John is about a daughter in the throes of conflict with her mother. She is finding out about mortality and sexuality and that her mother regards her as rival for her father's attention. When a group of high school students read this book in my class eight years ago, the boys in the back row all whined about reading "girl stuff." Presumedly they're older now and would have some interest in the struggles of their mothers, daughters, sisters, and lovers... not to mention themselves. After all, don't we all go through a period of gaining vision and resenting it simultaneously? I was caught with the opening scene, Annie John sees people dressed in black and some in white bobbing in the distance. What is it? she asks her mother, who tells her it must be the funeral of a child since such burials are always held in the morning. "Until then, I had not known that children could die."

Absolutely The Best Introduction To Java
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
This book was written by someone who truly knows how to teach and not merely transmit knowledge from brain to paper. His treatment of object oriented programming concepts in chapters 4 and 5 is FLAWLESS. No other author does such a thorough job (this includes Deitel, Horton, Schildt, Cadenhead, etc) and I speak as the owner of these (and other texts). Let this book be your first stop towards obtaining the Sun Java Programmer and Developer Certifications as well as IBM's Websphere Certifications. But don't forget to purchase the Java Language Specification as well.

A Pleasant Page Turner!

This book was a pleasant surprise for me. I had never read anything by Bohjalian before and just picked it up on the way to the airport for a long flight. This book made that flight seem like a 5 minute trip to the 7-11!The book is written from the point of view of Connie, a 13 year old whose mother, Sybil, is a midwife. Sybil performs a birth that has major complications which land her in court. This book looks at the human side of the story, while still keeping the legalities of the trial part of the plot. It makes for an interesting read.I HIGHLY recommend this book. I read it for the first time a few years ago, and I'm presently enjoying it for a second time! I believe it would be a great beach read, too!

JACK AUBREY RIDES THE WAVES AGAIN
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Audio Cassette
Aubrey and Maturin, Maturin and Aubrey - their lives and fortunes are as convoluted as the plot twists of the latest of Patrick O'Brien's chronicles. Picking up where The 100 Days left off, the pair cross the ocean, engage in middle-aged derring-do, and save the day for the twentieth time, with a spot of unexpected romance thrown in. As always the historical references are accurate; the minor failures of plot in this latest episode are easily overlooked. After all, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are men like no others in modern fiction; they fight, love, drink, indulge in excesses, mourn, spy, and get away with the loot better than anyone. They're a pair of upright Harry Flashmans, ready to rescue the damsel, make off with the gold, and free the oppressed colonials from their decadent rulers. Hornblower never had it this good.

Lyric and Direct

I did not want to read this book, but luckily, I was required to. Roy's prose was so lyrical that I had to keep reading until the story itself would not let me stop. In the beginning, the rain is not just coming down, it is "slanting silver ropes slammed into the loose earth, plowing it up like gunfire." Roy's observations of people are so on target, that the reader will understand and know the characters immediately. The twists and turns and how things turn out will leave you thinking about this book for a long time.
