One of the best books I've read

Book title: Wyrd Sisters

Wyrd Sisters - book cover picture

Wyrd Sisters takes place in Pratchett's Discworld universe. It is hilarious. It made me laugh out loud several times. Terry Pratchett has a wacky and extremely active imagination and yet he is able to tie everything together quite well. Wyrd Sisters is a story in its own right, with well-developed characters, but it is also a great parody of Macbeth, and Shakepeare in general. The more you know about Shakespeare and Macbeth, the more you can appreciate the book. I like it because it makes me laugh, and because of the richness of detail, and the knowledge Pratchett brings to his work. I think it would be a great book for students who are learning about Macbeth to read, and would be a great starting point for discussion.

Science Fiction and Romance - Jayne Ann Krentz at her best!

Book title: After Glow

After Glow - book cover picture

While I do love some of JAK's other books such as "Smoke and Mirrors" that are mysteries and suspense, I get the most fun out of the Harmony and lost colony books. Anyone remember "Shield's Lady"? I also loved the Amaryllis, Zinnia, Orchid books. One thing about this book is that you REALLY need to have read "After Dark" first so you know more about this world and what "ghost hunters" and "trap tanglers" are.

I hope that JAK continues to write as Jayne Castle and doesn't make us devoted Castle fans wait so long for a new lost colony romance!

A very fun read!!

A good friend and a good writer are hard to find.

Book title: Charlotte's Web
Rating: 5/5

Charlotte's Web - book cover picture

Charlotte is a spider and Wilber is a pig, who has just found out that his fate is to grace the farmer's table as bacon and ham. The warm hearted spider befriends the pig and sets about to save his life by spinning webs that promote Wilbur. "Terrific", "Radiant", and "Some Pig" are among the slogans she uses to transform opinions about Wilbur. Helping in her in her task are the barnyard residents chiefly the local rat Templeton. This is an unlikely pair of friends (as so many are), with Wilbur never quite able to overcome his distaste for the way in which Charlotte gains her sustenance. But it is a genuine friendship and all the more touching for the differences that the pair have to overcome. In the end both Charlotte and Wilbur make heavy sacrifices in the name of that friendship. This book is funny and touching and captivating from the first page to the last. No childhood should be without it.

stunning book on orphan/adoption theme

Train to Somewhere - book cover picture

I am the parent of two children who were adopted at older ages, and who remember wanting and needing a family, remember dreaming about their lost birth parents, like the heroine of this story. The first time I read this book aloud, I cried and my daughters were rigid with empathy. The second time we all cried, in a good way. It is a favorite book of our whole family now. Highly recommended for any adopted child at about age 7-8--a wonderful fable about loss, pain, being (not) chosen, and the meaning of family and happiness. Quite brilliant.

IBM WebSphere Starter Kit (Book/CD-ROM package) - book cover picture

This book is helpful in two things - it is both broad in terms of providing a complete overview of the WebSphere family of products (including load balancing, Tivoli integration, and the tools) but also gives a lot of details on the important stuff like EJBs, servlets, JSPs, and XML. I recommend it both for people working with WebSphere as well as people who are evaluating WebSphere. I don't think it is very appropriate for WebSphere experts.

I have never read any other books by Dean Koontz, but after this one, I will. I could hardly put it down and had to drag myself to work in the morning and couldn't wait to get back to it at night. I love the theme of interspecies communication and the surfer character must have been patterned after my beloved brother Mike. I can't wait to read the next one or others by this author. PLUS, he's a very good WRITER.

The 6 Messiahs - book cover picture

Ok, so it's not the same as The List of Seven. But I think it stands on its own, brings great closure to the earlier story and brought back one of my favorite characters, Jack Sparks. As a story goes, it held my interest from cover to cover and I wasn't the least bit disappointed. If you read it, don't go into it expecting the exact same book as its predecessor, because you won't get it. But if you enjoy seeing these old friends again, meeting new characters and getting a quick course in different religions across the world, you'll definitely enjoy it. I am hoping for a third but it probably won't happen.

The Devil Riding - book cover picture

Tamara Hayle is back again! Valerie Wilson Wesley again does a tremendous job with earthy Tamara Hayle. The story was wonderful and I love the way that the characters of whom we are familiar, keep showing up. When you read the Tamara Hayle mysteries, you will simply ENTER into her world. I love the way that Tamara grows throughout each novel. She is much richer, more grounded, more level headed with each novel. Each book also allows us to follow her successes and changes in her life. The end of this book leaves you anticipating one large decision that she will have to make and will manifest itself in the next novel. Personally, I think that is the fun and excitement and an added bonus of following Ms. Wesley's writing.Again, read this one. It is well worth your time. If you haven't read the other Tamara Hayle mysteries, read those also(preferably in sequence). You will never regret entering into the world of Tamara Hayle world.
