Daughter of the Blood (Black Jewels Trilogy) - book cover picture

This was wonderfully dark fantasy that trapped me and wouldn't let me go. The characters are brilliant, the setting is beautiful, and the plot is intriguing. Bisjop makes traditional bad guys the heroes of her novel, and totally revamps our conception of magic. It is true that there are several scenes in the book that I could have done without - mental images that are definately dark and also somewhat distrubing. However, these moments can be forgiven by the rest of the book. I fell in love with Lucivar, Daemon, and Saeten, and ached at Jaenelle's situation. I read the book in two days and immediately wanted to read the rest of the series. A definate must read for any lovers of fantasy.

Unexpectedly Excellent

Book title: Girl Walking Backwards
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Girl Walking Backwards - book cover picture

Skye is fifteen and trying desperately to find her place somewhere in this big, crazy world. With a hot shot father and an emotionally unstable and unreachable mother, the challenge is much more intense. She is struggling with her attraction to two different girls at her school and in the meantime making friends she never thought she'd have.

From page one, this book will have you absolutely hooked and as cliche as that sounds, this time I really do mean it. The writing style in this book is more of poetry and prose than a work of fiction. There is incredible symbolism and metaphorical usage that makes it much deeper and impacting. This is one of those books that keeps you reading for hours, because the words just flow on beautifully. A worthy read for anyone, especially the lover of quality, symbolic writing.

Memorable...

Book title: Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales (Landmarks of World Literature)

Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales (Landmarks of World Literature) - book cover picture

I got this version of "The Canterbury Tales" over my spring break (Partialy because that is the time of year the story takes place.) and a instant obsession was sparked between me and the fine black ink printed on the paper. I remember getting up before the sun rised just so I could sit in the quiet and take in every word the book had to offer.
It is so poetic its like a smooth flowing song, often you forget you are reading and drift off. Dozens of memorable lines fill the book, especially the first couple paragraphs in the General Prologe. Characters like the Knight and The Wife of Bath really become memorable, and almost 700 years later you can almost still relate to the stories they tell. I cannot stop praising this book. I highly recomend it.

Missing the Point

The Alphabetic Labyrinth: The Letters in History and Imagination - book cover picture

A reader reviewed this book by Joanna Drucker as not being enough informative on the alphabet history in itself. It's unfair and not informate to review the book like this. Its manifesto is all in the evocative title: The Alphabetic Labyrinth: The Letters in History and Imagination. Joanna Drucker traced an history of the alphabet from the very beginning talking about the interesting and often left apart complex variety of meanings of the letterform, embodied by mystery, symbolic, alchemic, religious, esotheric and many other values, offering an unique showcase of the history of writing. Saying the book is unsatisfying equals to say you have not even read the title, which explains quite well its content!

Binge: What Your College Student Won't Tell You - book cover picture

Was your college experience a critical part of making you who you are today ? Do you currently vote, lead, parent, invest, socialize etc. based on college-age influences ? Obviously, the answer is yes.

Kudos to Barry Seaman for thrusting himself into the breeding ground of America's next generation. The generation that will be leading most of us in our retirement. To some, his findings will be shocking, to others (in my mid-30's) closer to a walk down memory lane. Whatever your personal perspective, this book is undeniably important. A compelling read.

How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office 2003 (How to Do Everything) - book cover picture

There aren't too many people who don't know something about Office because its everywhere in every business, home, etc... HOWEVER, people don't really "know" office as well as they think they do. I'm an office manager and am always shocked by how much people don't know and even sometimes by what I don't know, either. I got this book to keep on hand in the office, and I've made it "required reading" for all new employees. If you're prepping for the MOUS exam or just want to know the software well and be more productive, this is the book for you. It's fun to read, the examples are relevant and clear, and the author is an expert in Office ---- what more can you ask?

BARDCORE CRITICISM AT ITS BEST!

Unspeakable Shaxxxspeares : Queer Theory and American Kiddie Culture - book cover picture

Burt's brilliant book is provocatively devoted to, among other adaptations and citations of Shakespeare in mass media, "bardcore" pornorgraphic adaptations such as A Midsummer Night's Cream, the Playboy Twelfth Night (a softcore rock musical) Romeo and Julian, and Hamlet: For the Love of Ophelia. All of these and more are listed on his excellent personal naughtyprofessor website. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Shakespeare and popular culture, and I am looking forward to Burt's edited book Shakespeare After Mass Media.

A Great Introduction to Warfare in the South Pacific

Touched With Fire: The Land War in the South Pacific - book cover picture

This was the first book I had ever read about warfare in the South Pacific. (I have read extensively about the European and Russian theaters of WW II.) Since reading this book, I have ordered several other books about the Pacific war, all because this book engrossed me so much. I concluded that given a choice, I would have preferred to have fought the Germans in Europe over the Japanese (and the jungle) in the Pacific. (Not much of a choice, though.) A great read. I reluctantly put it down each night. After reading this, I cannot wait for movie, The Thin Red Line to come out this winter. I only hopes it lives up to the standards set by Private Ryan.

The Best Undergraduate/Beginning Graduate QM Reference

Modern Quantum Mechanics (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

I used the 1st edition of Sakurai's book years ago during my MS work but did not fully appreciate it until I had read other texts (notably Shankar, Griffiths and Peebles). Without question, Sakurai's text is the best introduction to QM and is absolutely deserving of all the flattering reviews it has received over the years. The book's careful and lucid development of Dirac's notation is the clearest I've ever seen (once you've grasped the notation, which is easy, you'll wonder why most intro texts seem to favor wave functions over the state vector approach). The book's only drawback is its omission of the hydrogen atom problem, which limits its usefulness somewhat as a truly introductory text. Sakurai's development of the theory of angular momentum (Chapter 3) is without peer. As a student who experienced more than his share of difficulty with QM, I wholeheartedly recommend this book, which should be on every serious student's bookshelf.
