One of my all-time fav's

Dune - book cover picture

The book Dune and the series that followed is to me the best sci-fi ever written. I originally read Dune 25 years ago at the age of 15. (Before sci-fi was considered cool, or received big-budgets for films) It really blew my mind then and opened my eyes to the use (and abuse) of power and religion. When I heard that a movie was being made of it, I eagerly awaited it's release. While the effects were great, I feel that because of the scope of the book, the movie never really got off the ground. And when I saw what they had done to the character of the Baron von Harkonnen, I almost left the theater! To take the darkest, most evil, powerful and cunning of villians ever created and turn him into a prancing, drunken idiot really pi**ed me off! I felt that the director must never have read the book to so completely miss the mark! Well, that aside, a close tie for Dune itself is the last in the series: Dune:Chapterhouse

Best introduction on the market

Book title: Hieroglyphs Without Mystery: An Introduction to Ancient Egyptian Writing

Hieroglyphs Without Mystery: An Introduction to Ancient Egyptian Writing - book cover picture

This book is the best introduction to reading hieroglyphic inscriptions I have seen. While "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs" by Collier et.al. is more complete, and actually introduces you to more grammar and vocabulary, Zauzich's book is a very readable introduction. It starts from the very basics and will allow you to get the gist of a variety of inscriptions from actual artifacts: cartouches, items from Tut-Ankh-Amen's tomb, etc. I highly recommend it!

Byzantium - book cover picture

I was told about this book by a friend whose reading habits I admire. I have to read many technical books constantly for my job so I enjoy some fiction from time to time. I particularly enjoy historical fiction. This book is one of the best I have read about Medieval times. It was a book that one could become totally engrosed in. I also was impressed how this writer can write some very tense scenes and not have to use objectional language. I have recommended this book and lent my copy to many friends and they have all thanked me. Read this book and you will be glad you did. I have since read 7 other Lawhead books and even though this is the best one so far I have enjoyed all the others.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) - book cover picture

This book is wonderful - it stands firmly on its own merits and is a great read. My son and I are very addicted to the Harry books and can't wait for the next installment. The characters are well-rounded - no one is all evil or all good. Even the nastiest kid in school who hates Harry with a passion - you get a glimpse of his home life and figure that there is a good reason why he's as rotten as apples gone bad.I highly recommend these books. I also hope that someone who knows how to handle taking a book to the screen can be persuaded to make some really great movies out of them. Done by the right people, it could be wonderful!

Easily one of the best fantasy books I've ever read!

Book title: Belgarath the Sorcerer

Belgarath the Sorcerer - book cover picture

Contrary to most expectations, I did not read Eddings' Belgariad and Malloreon series first. I had always been turned off by the sheer number of books in each series. How good could they be?

When Belgarath the Sorceror came out, I took the opportunity to get a feel for Eddings' work without having to plunge into the entire series. While I missed a lot of the "present time" references, I still thought the book was fantastic. Over the next two weeks, I read the entire Belgariad and Malloreon, then went back and re-read Belgarath with a whole new appreciation.

This series is not to be missed by any fan of Feist, Brooks, or Goodkind

A refreshing piece of gay literature.

The Men from the Boys - book cover picture

This is a terrific book. It's honest, real and unafraid. Willima Mann has written a modern gay story with characters who are believable and likeable. He has avoided the cliched and presented a way of living, that certainly I and many of my peers, can relate to. The non-linear structure is great - and he has used this technique skillfully and effectively. Similarly he has shown great restraint in the final chapter, leaving you with a true sense of having spent time with characters who are real. Buy it. Read it. You'll love it.

The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing) - book cover picture

I just finished reading the book. It was completely awesome. I recommend to EVERYONE. Prior to this I had no knowledge of stock market investing. I am a senior in high school and took a short 3 week class during the summer on finance. This book was recommended to me and now I recommend it to you.

This book comes with the authors website ([...]) which has even newer book updates and printable charts. The best part about reading a book by Kelly is personal contact with the author! I emailed Kelly with a question today(a holiday) and he replied personally the same day!!! I've never heard of being able to contact an author that quickly or at all!

It has to be the best book out their for Stock Market investing. I plan to buy his other "Neatest Little Guide" books soon.

Kingsolver's Masterpiece

Book title: The Poisonwood Bible
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Poisonwood Bible - book cover picture

The setting is the Belgian Congo as it approached independence; the characters are white baptists transplanting themselves in the jungle to spread "the good news". Although there is an adventure about all of this, the book is a commentary about many things:race, women, slavery(physical and psychological),men, cultures classing, politics, God and religion.Whether you agree with the commentary or not, it is all quite thought provoking. Although not as powerfully written as Toni Morrison's "Beloved", this novel is a more gracefull counterpart in the discussion of the human condition and human interaction.Highly recommended.

excellent research and analysis of the church's future

Book title: Death of the Church
Rating: 5/5

Death of the Church - book cover picture

I have been reading several books on postmodernism and its implications for the church, but this book goes even further with better research into generational characteristics that rang true in my own life and my family. It is the best book I have read on the need change in the church, and I have read at least five. It also explained why my church has been doing well in that we unwittingly have been ministering to the Switchers and the survivor generation.
