The Girl With the Silver Eyes (Apple Paperbacks) - book cover picture

...Although it has been years since I last read it, I remember it well because there was nothing else like it out there.
Granted, you can find other books with the "Girl against the world" motif (Pennies For the Piper, Jacob Have I Loved, Bridge to Terabithia, Homecoming, Jackaroo, Scott O'Dell's stuff, The Language of Goldfish, Harriet The Spy, the Anastasia Krupnick series, The Secret Window, new stuff by Francesca Lia Block etc.), but none of them really speak to a young reader with such a voice of ...realism as Willo Davis Roberts.
The atmosphere of her books reminds me, as an adult, of Shirley Jackson's and perhaps Ursula K. LeGuin's...

The funniest, most original book ever written

Book title: Confederacy of Dunces

Confederacy of Dunces - book cover picture

This book was written by John Kennedy Toole in 1963, while he was in his twenties serving in the U.S. Army. It was published a decade after the author's death and won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It is the most original, the most satirical, and the funniest book I've read. What John Kennedy Toole observed in 1963 New Orleans resonates with the U.S. thirty-five years later. The protagonist is so poignantly described that he can't be far from Toole himself. Bear with him for the first few pages and you'll be hooked on this unlovable character to the finish, where the story's perfect symmetry implodes on itself. I only wish that Toole had endured life to share his perception, wit, and writing with us for at least one more book.

CONGO - book cover picture

Crichton does a wonderful job of telling how an expedition dissapears suddenly and swiftly in the unknown of the congo. Another expedition led by Karen Ross goes out to find out what happened and to finish the former expeditions mission: to find type IIb blue diamonds in the heart of Africa.
Amy the signing gorilla is a funny and needed character in this novel.
The team encounters difficulty along the way: The Zaire Army, hippos, cannibals, and something too good to give away.
A must read for all Crichton fans and/or realistic fiction.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make a positive change in their life. This is by far one of the best books you'll find on the market. The contents are written clearly and concisely and encourages the reader to reach their full potential. This is not the kind of book you read then place on the shelf until the next yard sale. You will refer to this book time and time again. It is beautifully illustrated from beginning to end. Your time is an important investment and this book is well worth your time.

An Introduction to Database Systems (Introduction to Database Systems) - book cover picture

This is the best technical book I have ever read (and I have read many). This book was required for a graduate school database class at Carnegie Mellon. Although I read the class required chapters, I found little time to really read the book while in school. Since graduation (I am now a consultant) I have returned to this book constantly. It is the perfect text for those who want a solid and analytical background in the subject of relational databases. I have spoken with other classmates from CMU who feel it is the most valuable book they have. C. J. Date, one of the leaders in this field, covers relational theory, relational algebra and calculus, database design, ERD's, as well as SQL. I would encourage readers to set up the sample SUPPLIER-ORDERS-PARTS database to really leverage the examples used in the text. This book will have a longer life than any other technical book you ever purchase. A must have.

Elementary Statistics: A Step by Step Approach - book cover picture

This is THE BEST elementary statistics book I have read. Covers all concepts in a very easy to understand manner. The examples and solved problems show you eaxctly how a problem can be approached. For non-statiscians who want to use statistics to analyze their data, this is an excellent starting point. Wont boggle you with extensive formulae and derivations. But will tell you how and why the tests were developed and why and where you should use a particular test. Excellent ready reference for any data analyst.

Hidden Agenda - book cover picture

KF: What a great read! When it is flooding outside up to the doorsill like right now in northern California or blizzarding in Montana, pull out this clever, intriguing roller coaster story, light up the fire and sit back for the entire evening. Stay up on a Friday night, get the cocoa cup ready, and read this unusual and unique mystery from beginning to end. Tight writing, sinister plotting - a "swell" romp through a TV news-based story. Raising a question that seems particularly appropriate at this time: Do TV news networks create news, make news to raise ratings and to achieve political ends?

to say it was good is an understatement!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

the world of harry potter is lighter than narnia (all of thosebooks, although strongly connected to the Bible, made me cry) but justas adventurous. hogwarts acadamy is like the school that so many of us young people would dream of going to, the magical sport of quidditch one we all wish we could play. the twists in this plot are spectacular. although the original intent of ms rowling may have been for readers 8-12, it has certainly caught enough of my attention. i am not an avid reader, but this book kept me up all night. and i am not, contrary to the beliefs of many paranoid parents, in love with witchcraft. i can seperate fiction from reality in a way that i can enjoy a movie or a book without becoming trapped inside of it. and maybe that is what you "parents standing up for religion" should look at...isn't this all just make-believe?

Greenmantle - book cover picture

I am overjoyed to see this immanent re-release. DeLint has an ability to merge mundane 'reality' and the realm of Faerie that is absolutely unmatched. This novel is one of his best; an amazing tale of fantasy, suspense, magick, and the power of Nature. The story is of a mother and daughter who have just moved into a very rural area of Canada, the man down the road whose past is threatening to catch up with him, an elusive elfin girl, and an ancient horned Mystery in the woods. Note: For Wiccans and Pagans, this is one of the finest explorations of the Horned God bar-none (and DeLint's not even Pagan).
