Okay, okay, it's not "Garp" or "Owen." But it's VERY funny.

The Water-Method Man - book cover picture

I love to read but I'm not an intellectual, so my review will be brief.

I read this book in college (1984) and have kept it over the years, re-reading it whenever the urge for a little "Bogus" appears. I laughed so hard in my dorm room that my friend (a non-fiction-reading geology major) asked to borrow the book when I was through. Twenty years later, we still reference parts of the book when we're together.

Though I'm not a huge movie buff, I've always wondered why this didn't get made into a motion picture. Of course, John Cusack is too old now to play Bogus, but I've always thought he had a kind of vacancy in his face that would be perfect for the role; he also has the charm, which Bogus obviously must have to attract the women he does.

John Irving writes about flawed men in a way that makes me think he was once a woman, or (surprise) he's a man who's very in touch with his own weaknesses. Being a woman, I appreciate the honesty (and the humor).

Must-read while studying McLuhan

Marshall McLuhan: The Medium and the Messenger - book cover picture

Marchand and Postman do an excellent job with this biography on an unusual media prophet/quack. Reading about McLuhan's childhood, education, and work helped explain a lot about the man and his ideas. The book reads very well, and puts a lot of his ideas in a context that makes them easier to understand. If you're just starting to study McLuhan, this book is a great starting point. Also check out "McLuhan for Beginners" for a very quick and fun overview.

An Unquiet Mind - book cover picture

This book is fantastic! What impresses me most is that Jamison fits so much information into such a short book without overwhleming the reader. I read somewhere that this is meant to be the layperson's guide to biploar. That is definitely is. I found this book information, interesting and inspring. A must read for anyone interested in the mental health arena or anyone looking for a good biography about a strong woman.

This definately was the best book I`ve ever read.As soon as possible I`ve just got to get my hands on The Sevon Songs. I hope that turns out to be as good as the first was! From the beggining to the end of the book I was Thrilled dazzled and amazed! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure, and just plain fun reading! In this book Barron takes the epic story of the master of wizardryand and sheds a light on the childhood of Merlin! When I first bought the book I didn`t think it would be such a great story. But boy was I wrong!!! The characters were great, the story was amazing,I doubt there is a better book in existance, and if there is it must be the sequal to this book!!! 10 on my scale!!!!

The Giver is a wonderful story about a boy named Jonas who becomes a Twelve in his community and gets assigned the job of Receiver of Memory. The rest of the story is about his life at his new job. The is an excellent story that you should really read. I thought it was great and I don't do much reading. So if you like reading and you like fictional stories than I suggest that you read this book.

All the Shah's Men : An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror - book cover picture

The display of ignorance and Shah apologists on this forum is simply appalling. And while many here are pointing out that Kinzer's hypothesis is oversimplification (Ajax-Islamic Revolution-WTC) it really isn't. Imagine a world where the Shah didn't have to be ousted by Khomeini and his followers. Imagine a world where Iran still held the United States in good graces. What exactly did we gain by this coup except the result of the first Islamic Republic, one that was fundamentally opposed to our interests in the region, and in many ways the way we live. Oh, and one more thing. They don't hate us for what we've done and merely who we are? What are you smoking my friend? Do you imagine that our intervention in their homeland is just something they can shrug off, whilst hating us indiscrimantely based on what borders we live inside? Jesus. Anyway. Good book.

Excellent start to an excellent series. I mean, wow! Weis and Hickman just bombard you with amazing new places, characters and ideas. Nothing less that a classic. And to the person who complained about the lack of battles: have you ever considered that "combat" is not part of the definition of fantasy? Go back to your R.A.Salvatore and leave Arianus to people who can appreciate it.

The Way of Solomon: Finding Joy and Contentment in the Wisdom of Ecclesiastes - book cover picture

I am absolutely captured by this book! I stumbled across it at the library doing some research for a college paper. I am not identified with any religion in specific, and tend to consider myself simply "myself." Therefore, it surprised me how meaningful and inspiring this book is...it journey's way beyond any sectarian boundaries...and Rami Shapiro is a wonderful guide. It is truly a look into the "Way Of" life...similar to Celestine Prophecy, and the like. Absolutely beautiful! I'm buying it for several special people in my life...hopefully you, too, will be moved by Rami Shapiro's interpretation of Solomon's Ecclesiastes.

Learning Python, Second Edition - book cover picture

I was recently introduced to Python by the second author, David Ascher (who works at the same Institute as I do). I am really impressed by the power of Python and by the exceptional quality of the reference guides and this book in particular. As a former Professor of Computer Science at Harvard, I wish that all computer science books were written with this amount of clarity and humour. Everybody in my research lab is now learning Python from this book and my chief programmer is even more enthusiastic about it than I am. It has enabled him to write some image processing software in a few weeks that would have required months in other languages (and he knew nothing about Python two months ago). For myself, it has encouraged me to start programming again after a gap of many years. In summary, the Python language is extremely useful for image processing (and many other applications) and this book makes it very easy and enjoyable to learn.
