I need...I need...? I need...What was it? Another Dean Koontz book to read. I've read all of them. In this thriller Koontz "leads us to Stillwater", a pretty normal guy it turns out--for a change, Dean! Great interplay with his family. He winds another "can't put it down story", a very nice audio experience if you are working on the house or driving somewhere, I might add. Again, the villain is incredibly ghastly. Again the detail is a little TOO graphic. These conditions make you scream encouragement to the Stillwaters, "Go Marty, Go!". You are really scared of the villain. I wish I could write stories like this. The work and talent that went into this one must have blown out a few gobstoppers.

Gregor The Overlander (Underland Chronicles) - book cover picture

THIS IS MOST AWESOME! My 10 year olds just got this book and before they could read it, I wanted to check it out (plus, I was bored!) Well, I couldn't put it down! I had it read in 2 days! I just got online to look for the sequel. Apparently, there isn't one yet! BIG BUMMER! I can't wait to hear about the prophecy of Bane and my daughters are fighting over who can read it next!
This book should NOT only receive MANY awards, it SHOULD be viewed as a modern day Alice in Wonderland! Except, NO wimpy characters here! This is an awesome book for Kids and ADULTS!

On Secret Service - book cover picture

From the very first page, John Jakes weaves yet another splendid mix of fact and fiction about our great American past. Jakes' unique understanding of the people and the period depicted in his latest classic make this book perhaps his best to date. Beginning in the bustling metropolis of Chicago(pop. 100,000)and the rumors of the southern states seceding from the Union, the author takes you through the many quandries that faced both the high-minded abolitionists and stubbornly independent south. The land is in turmoil and few have any idea of what is coming. If history had been taught like this in classrooms we would all be historians.

One Hundred Years of Australian Solitude!!

Souls in the Great Machine - book cover picture

It's about time someone in the Sci-Fi community wrote an original and interesting book. This book was a fantastic read, very thought provoking with a great cast of characters. The book is ambitious, and in the hands of a lesser author it might not have worked. But McMullen, unlike many of his Australian counterparts, pulls of this work magnificently. I can't wait to read the second book. Looking at some of the negative reviews here, I imagine that this book is a Love It Or Hate It type novel, so don't feel bad if you didn't get it. The novel is very reminiscent of books such as Destination Road, where the writing style and plot conveyances are not proscribed in a traditional fashion. If I had to compare McMullen's writing style, I would say it most like Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and book has a real, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" feel about it. If you like a good book and are willing to try something a bit different, this book is for you.

One of the best books in years

An Instance of the Fingerpost - book cover picture

A wonderfully compelling novel, where nothing truly is what it seems. It starts off giving you one impression, then gives you a totally different view point, and by the end, everything you thought was true is turned upside down. Not many authors today can weave such a strong, solid, believeable story in four different versions, all completely different, and yet still plausible. Its only virtue is length, which probably would frighten most readers, but it's well worth it.

C++ Primer (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

As a young software developer hungry to learn, I find myself sorting through a large number of computer books to find the well-written ones that are worth investing my time and money in. After reading and using Lippman's C++ Primer, I strongly recommend it as among the best for anyone with programming experience who's interested with improving their understanding of C++. If you're completely new to object-oriented languages, I'd recommend a more introductory text first such as Deitel's C++ How To Program.

The Lion's Game - book cover picture

What a great book! I couldn't put it down from beginning to end. I love the perspective from both sides. Sometimes I forgot who I was hoping would win the game until the end. You really get in the minds of each side and relate to their feelings. I also love the references to DeMille's other books. You have to be a fan to catch them. My favorite thing about the book is DeMille's ability to make me laugh out loud despite the seriousness of the plot or the intensity of the moment. That is a real gift. I only hope the reviewer from Sag Harbor that said he was setting us up for a sequel is right.

One Last Time: A Psychic Medium Speaks to Those We Have Loved and Lost - book cover picture

My girlfriend made me watch "Crossing Over" on TV and at first I didn't know what I was watching. Normally when you see a psychic you feel disapointed so watching John work his magic made me go buy "One Last Time" to find out who this guy was.
The book is mostly about John's childhood, family and how he became a psychic medium. There are so many thing going on in the book, yet one thing always seems to be linked to another. John's uncanny ability to talk to the dead seems both amazing and normal at the same time.
If there is a fault with te book it is that you want to learn to do it yourself, yet he only spends the last chapter of the book talking about visualization.

A Precious Legacy

Book title: Precious Bane
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Precious Bane - book cover picture

This book takes one back to a day when the timeless values were often the subject of literature, and language held beauties we seldom see today. It is a deeply touching evocation of a long ago world as remote as Middle Earth or Narnia. The meaning of the title is not clear to me, whether it is Prue's deformity or the passionate devotion to materialism of her brother, but I rather lean to the latter, since his life is so utterly poisoned by his addiction. Highly recommended.
