Dynamic tension between reality and hyperbole bound me to this book. The relationship between Peggy and James is frought between taboo and pure innocence; James' physical enormity and Peggy's innocuous presence; her righteous pursuit and his quiet resignation. McCracken crafts a far fetched story into a tender reality of heartfelt emotions articulated with envious clarity. Artfully drawn characters and relationships are expressed with fluid intensity that is a pleasure to read and reflect upon.

Excellent, but don't read it on your very first Koontz book

Book title: The Taking
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Taking - book cover picture

The Taking is a bizarre and dark story about the end of the world. The characters are interesting, the horror is incredible and the suspense is entertaining. But a word of caution. If you have never read a Koontz book before and don't know what incredible feats of literature he's capable of, don't read this as your first book. You will probably never read another Koontz again. The Taking is fantastically dark and demented, one of the finest works in the genre (and believe me, I've read most horror stories, including Stephen King and Richard Bachman). A great read, without a doubt.

Fantastic story crafting

Book title: I, Robot
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
I, Robot - book cover picture

Asimov was genius of the first order in sci-fi writing. I Robot displays how adept he was at forming fantastic plots, simply using three little rules. Each story in I Robot has the same theme, there is a complication in a robot or a group of robots due to one of the three laws of robotics, but each story has a definate feel and problem that is taotally and utterly unique.

I Robot shows what real science fiction is and a true sci-fi fan well relish every word of it.

Truly Awesome

Book title: Ship of Magic

Ship of Magic - book cover picture

I am very impressed with Robin Hobb. I read this book on the recomendation of a friend. At first I was a little worried. The book starts out a tad slow. I was a little confused by the chapters pertaining to the serpents and the opening with the mysterious island didn't have me frothing at the bit.

But then you get in the book and you just can't put it down. There are so many good storylines that run through the book. You quickly become engrossed in the actions and well being of the characters who are well rounded with their share of quirks and demons.

The story line has you turning pages at an ungodly rate and when you reach the end you'll probably do what I did and run out and buy book two and three.

But if like me you find yourself having problems getting into the book at first stick with it. It seems to be a trademark of the Robin Hobb books to start slow then explode into action.

Hiking off trail and 'in-the-know'

Book title: Where The Waters Divide : A Walk Across America Along the Continental Divide

Where The Waters Divide : A Walk Across America Along the Continental Divide - book cover picture

Karen Berger and Dan Smith report from their 3,000 mile trek about issues that are near to the heart of any hiker. They discuss issues around cattle on public land, about the use and misuse of water and about the way hikers influence the land and the people around them. The narrative includes information on the history of the American West and historical 'hikes' such as the Lewis and Clark expedition. By mixing these tidbits with a delightful report of the difficulties and wonders of their hiking they create a book that is best read by candle or flashlight in the comfort of your tent. The only problem is that it is too heavy to take on a long-distance hike. Recommended for anyone contemplating the Continental Divide Trail or any other long distance hike.

Unparalleled Horror Writing

Book title: Silence of the Lambs
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Silence of the Lambs - book cover picture

There was a gap of years between my reading "Red Dragon" and "Silence of the Lambs" and, for some reason, I did not immediately connect them. It eventually clicked, partway through "Silence of the Lambs", and I then reread "Red Dragon" after I finished "Silence of the Lambs". I'm not sure horror writing gets any better than either of these. The characters are extremely well-developed (I know these people, which is creepy in Lecter's case), there are no slow spots, the writing itself is of high quality, the plot is intricate but coherent, and the tension created is incredible. Don't read either one in an empty house on a stormy night but, if you like the genre, make sure you read both, preferably consecutively. When it comes to "Hannibal", you can tell it's the same author and many of the ingredients are there, but the flow is too slow (I have reviewed it also if you're interested).

A Journal With Quotations for the Soul - book cover picture

I usually keep my journals in plain spiral notebooks because there's something intimidating about a fancy journal book. I received this journal as a gift and began leafing through it to read the quotations. They were so postitive and thought provoking that I found myself looking forward to writing in it, and writing much deeper and more spiritual thoughts than my usual journal entries. It's one of the best gifts I have received.

Compelling reading...just great.

Book title: Grass Roots
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Grass Roots - book cover picture

I do not think that Stuart Woods has ever disappointed me. "Grassroots" is intricately plotted with absorbing parallel stories that work their way to the same bad guys. Mr. Woods writes in a way that makes the pages fly by. It's easy to pull for the good guys and it is impossible to work up any sympathy for the villains. The protagonist (Senatorial candidate Will Lee) is scheduled to reappear in Mr. Woods' next novel ("The Run"). After reading "Grassroots" I shall be first in line when "The Run" hits the stores sometime in May. Mr. Woods has a most entertaining series currently going with bon vivant lawyer Stone Barrington that I find to be great fun.

The Universal Revelator of Truth

Beyond Belief : The Secret Gospel of Thomas - book cover picture

I have'nt read the book yet, our bookshop don't have it yet but I'll get one. And I know its going to be a great one 'cause I've read The Gospel of Thomas. That was very Enlightening for me, it has given me an extra energy of my faith, and light of why we are here now. I'm Mr. Nobody but I am a happy man.
My big disappoinment after reading these great reviews from all of you people and this has been going on for a while now, is Why IRAQ end up like this? I am not trying to make us feel guilty, it just shows that we have not really embrace the real value of the gospel. Many of us has not found our own truth yet. It will someday. Now my favorite saying is 'LOVE AND AWARENESS IS THE WAY'...its like saying JESUS AND BUDDHA IS THE WAY
Thank you Elaine,
