The Weigh Down Diet - book cover picture

This book arrived to someone who had given up on ever making another diet work. Well overweight and discouraged. it was like a light in the night, it just made plain common sense and tied in with so much I read in the Bible but had never heard taught. Gwen gets to the heart of the matter! She challenges you to consider the myths around dieting and discover for yourself what is really keeping you FAT! It worked for husband and wife and our children too. In summary she says, eat as often as you are hungry and only eat as long as you are hungry. Listen to your body's feedback which is a God-given gift. She has some revolutionary points of view on all sorts of things - refreshing a and likely to make you think and thin. Get it!

Great Book on the First 30 Years of Animation

Book title: Before Mickey
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Before Mickey - book cover picture

In histories of animation there is usually a very small amount of time devoted to animation that was released before "Steamboat Willie". This book fills this hole quite nicely. The book goes into exhaustive detail on James Stuart Blackton, Winsor McCay, Emile Cohl, Otto Messmer, the Bray Studio, and animation shops that emerged from the Bray Studio. There is one chapter devoted to commercial animation in Europe from this time period. But if you're looking for a more in depth study of early European animators like Ladislas Starewicz and Lotte Reiniger, you might want to check some place else (I'm not sure where). Though one entire chapter IS devoted to Emile Cohl, this mostly deals with American animation. Those looking for information about animation outside of Western society are looking in the wrong place. As its title suggests, this book is basically a history of events leading up to Mickey Mouse.

Daughters of Darkness - book cover picture

Not only is this an amazing book, I believe it is the best book in the series that I have read so far. I am a huge admirer of L. J. Smith, and I can't wait until "Huntress" comes out. I just started reading her books last summer. I have since then tried to read all her books and recruit my friends to get hooked. Ash and Mary-Lynnette are extremely convincing characters, as are all the characters from the book. You can really see Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade from Lisa J.'s descriptions. You can totally understand the characters, and can almost believe they are real! READ THIS BOOK

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day (Oprah's Book Club) - book cover picture

I first read the book then I read the other reviews. Ms. Cleage is making a social commentary not offering solutions. Why should she? When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in '94 my first thoughts were definitely NOT about how little time I had left in which to change the world. I identified so strongly with Ava-and I'm a 43 yr. white woman living in a rural area. That sense of immediacy, regret and poignancy that comes with a diagnosis of terminal illness is recognizable to me. I cried-truly, was caught of guard-when Ava cut Aretha's hair. That touched me more than anything else in the book. It's about becoming and then living who we truly are.

Tom Robbins and his Doberman Pelican

Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates - book cover picture

I had this dream the other night about Tom Robbins. In it, he was a book store owner and he had a pet pelican who had plumage similar in color to a Doberman Pinscher. What does that have to do with this book? Well a book has to be pretty good to affect me that way. Amazon wants me to limit my review to the book's content. That is like asking someone to describe the Grand Canyon in one word or less. Plot is more or less irrelevant. Most dialogue is more internal in nature, and trying to pigeonhole this book is like trying to hug a dust devil. The bottom line is that while I may not be able to adequately describe what the novel is "about," you should read it because, like most of his novels, it will change you in some subtly sublime way. And that is important.

Fresh and balanced look at Lee

Book title: Robert E. Lee: A Biography

Robert E. Lee: A Biography - book cover picture

Professor Thomas's represents a middle position on the Lee assessment scale. He is neither as worshipful as Freeman nor as downwardly revisionist as Connelly. Also, he is not (and does not claim to be) a military historian, so those searching for extremely detailed accounts of the Civil War battles in which General Lee was involved may be disappointed. What this book =is= is an elegantly written and compelling account of the life of one of the most important figures in American history. It is impeccably researched and will stand for many years as an exemplar of historiography.

really enjoyed it

Cravings - book cover picture

All the stories were great. For those who were disappointed with Hamilton's Anita Blake story - heck - I would read that series for the complicated romance alone! - so the story was good for me - also, nice to know more about Damian and Nathaniel's characters, right? The only slightly off-putting thing was the lack of introspection in Wilk's Originally Human story. So I'm a a succubus. And I can change my physical age. There didn't seem to be enough glimpses into the heroine character.

WHAT SMART WOMEN KNOW - book cover picture

What Smart Women know is a must-read for any female. It begins a little slow, but picks up into the middle with some GREAT tips on how to live your own life. It will put things in proper perspective on everything from: getting over a failed relationship, what to expect during the healing process, and most importantly: how a smart woman should conduct herself in future relationships. It also deals with women dating after divorce, a section on how to spot an abusive man, as well as how to talk to your partner about safe sex. It is such a great book and would certainly make a great gift for any young woman.

Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process - book cover picture

The Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process is an excellent resource for anyone working in the entertainment industry. I haven't been able to find another book that so effectively takes you through the nuts and bolts of post production, from scheduling all the way through to delivery. If you are an entertainment executive, a film student, or anywhere in between, this book will be an invaluable resource. I've been working in the film and television industry for twelve years and this book has helped me in jobs at two major television networks and in feature post production at several studios. The new edition provides accurate and up to date information and is the only book I've been able to find that adequately covers the film laboratory. The Guide is the one book I always have at my desk. I strongly recommend it.

For years I have wanted to learn to knit, but I always thought it looked too complicated. A friend recently bought me this book and told me I could knit most of the patterns without any experience. So far so good. This book has complete beginner instructions that are clear and easy to follow. The patterns are great and relatively simple. I made a scarf called "hole-in-one" and it only took me a few days! My friends can't believe it.This book is a must for anyone who has ever wanted to knit beautiful garments but thought it was too hard to do.
