The Angel of Darkness - book cover picture

A much better book than the first (The Alienist), this sequel is well worth checking out! Narrated by Stevie Taggart, Dr. Kreizler's servant and now on his own, owner of a tobacco shop, this story details the kidnap of the daughter of a Spanish diplomat, just as the diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Spain are imploding, leading to the Spanish-American War. The major characters are fully-blown here, oddly human and very real - each has his or her own limitations which are very wellexplored in the novel. The minor characters could use a little more fleshing out - but the murderer is very well explored and there is a great deal more plot to this book than the previous one.

The Forgotten Soldier - book cover picture

Without a doubt this book exemplifies what it is to be in a military unit under the most extreme conditions. It reminds those who have served their countries what it was like to have friendships forged during those conditions. For those who have never served their countries, it spells out the pain and folly of war - that any veteran can see. This book is one of the two books best suited to the task of teaching us, the easy way, that war is folly - the other is "All Quiet on the Western Front

Cliff Sheats' Lean Bodies : The Revolutionary New Approach to Losing Bodyfat by Increasing Calories - book cover picture

I have been on the Lean Bodies plan by Cliff Sheats since March 1 and even allowing myself one night to go off the plan somewhat, I have still lost 20 pounds. I just can't say enough about Lean Bodies.. Its a nutritious plan with very healthy eating. Its also a plan that you can adopt to your needs after the weight is off. I have learned about food combining, which I think is the key. I read another plan by Larry North, but felt that it wasn't realistic and hard to follow

Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home - book cover picture

These two people will live on forever, even long after they're gone. If you've never seen their cooking shows, try to; they are both fabulously entertaining as well as knowledgeable; and without being "cutesy" in the process. The two together, with their different styles and opinions on cooking, show that there isn't necessarily always a right way or a wrong way. And, they appreciate each other's differences. They are so much fun! Together, they are magic! I adore them both! Thank you!

Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons (Plume Books) - book cover picture

Leonard Maltin has a real knowledge of animation and his passion and enthusiasm for cartoons is apparent. The book traces animation from its beginnings at the turn of the century up to modern day. Extensive coverage is provided to all the major cartoon studios and many of the key directors. The illustrations are excellent. Maltin provides a fair amount of detail but not too much to overwhelm the casual fan. Anyone interested in the history of animation or just wants information on which films to see is well advised to pick up this very well written book.

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11) - book cover picture

Hi, I am Andrea May. I read the "The Grim Grotto" over Christmas Break 2004-2005. This is one of the books in the series of unfortunate events. I think it is for ages 8-13. My younger sister also enjoyed the first book but hasn't read this one yet.

In this book the Baudelaire Siblings continue their search for the sugar bowl. They join the crew of a submarine. They go into a cave where Klaus thinks it is. Then they go back to the submarine and one of the Baudelaires comes out with a mushroom in their helmet. Then up comes their least favorite villain, Count Olaf.

I really enjoyed this book but if you think you can't finish this book, I would advise you to keep on reading this book. Will all of the Baudelaires survive? Will Count Olaf triumph? To find out Read "The Grim Grotto."

Cosmic Voyage - book cover picture

I don't have much to add to the other reviews. I would recommend this book to ALIEN investigators and Out OF Body Experiencers (OBE). As for where is his evidence, you need to check it out yourself. He gives several references to begin your remote viewing abilities (OBE). Among these are transcendental meditation and Robert Monroe's books. Whether you label these "energy beings" aliens, angles, yourself, or what ever is up to you. But it is very interesting. Be warned, once you unlock these psychic doorways you can not close them, and that can lead to many unsettling mindsets. Be strong though! Good Luck.

A Companion to James Joyce's Ulysses (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism) - book cover picture

I am still digesting "Ulysses." I read it while walking around Dublin a few years ago. It was marvelous to trace the steps of Leopold and Molly, and to see what they "saw," but the novel remains a distant pleasure to the reader. I must admit it is not the most accessible book ever written, but it gets four stars for its intent ... and that it is better than "Finnegan's Wake." Be warned: This novel is not for the casual reader. This is one of several excellent accompaniments to "Ulysses" and well worth the price and the time to compare against Joyce.

Hyperion - book cover picture

Dan Simmons has created the ultimate in sci-fi epic. Not since Asimov's Foundation series has an author been able to examine the same themes of politics, adventure, and the human psyche. The plot is the story of the Canterbury Tales: A group of pilgrims telling their life-stories. The majority of this book is the tales, and all are poignant, thoughtful, and usually depressing. I prefer the Priest's Tale, but all people have different preferences. Anyway, if you're a fan of Asimov's foundation, or have never been a huge sci-fi fan, pick up Hyperion. It will influence your entire view of science fiction.
