Not just good advice, but a new attitude about money.

Everything You Know About Money Is Wrong: Overcome the Financial Myths Keeping You from the Life You Want - book cover picture

This down-to-earth and refreshingly non-prescriptive book helps put the whole money issue in perspective. The author shows you how to question your existing assumptions and separate out common emotional responses to financial decision-making -- some of which may actually be preventing you from accomplishing your most cherished and deeply held goals in life! In addition to the sensible advice, the client stories add a lot of heart and depth. And I particularly appreciated the notion (explained in detail in the second section) that if you understand what your goals are, and clearly understand your spending habits, you'll change your behavior, not because you *should*, but because you *want to*, in order to make your dreams happen. This is a gift. Highly recommended. P.S. This author is a great speaker and if you get a chance to see her in person, jump at it. You'll be entertained and amused, and come away much wiser as well.

Measure Twice, Cut Once : Lessons from a Master Carpenter - book cover picture

When my wife first bought it for me I did not know what to think of it. But once I started reading it I could not put it down. And I kept going back to it. Norm offers a great insight into tools I have used and never really thought much about. One can tell immediately for example when he talks about framing squares (why a quality one is hard to find)that he has the experience you should listen to and heed. Having lost my father a year before his dad passed away, I found a lot in common with his feelings. I did take notes and reread it 8 times. Norm impressed me with how much he really knows about tools. And his experience in using them day after day, year after year taught me how much I have to go inorder to be called a Master Carpenter.

The Duke And I (Avon Romantic Treasure) - book cover picture

The Duke and I was the first book I have read written by Julia Quinn. Let me just tell you guys something, I laughed out loud! It was so funny and refreshing! Being a mother of three and owning my own business, I wasn't able to read it in one setting, but it wasn't because I didn't want too! The Family scenes were great and funny! The love scenes were very nicely done and very sensual! The story was great! It wasn't all hardship stuff that so many stories seem to have (if you read alot of books you know what I mean.) It is more down to earth. The charactors are great people! So, if you want to read a really great book and escape to a different place for this one! After all, I am online right now ordering more of her books!

Enchanters' End Game (The Belgariad, Book 5) - book cover picture

Enjoyed this one as much as the others in the series. This ends the Belgariad series and sets up for the Malloreon. All in all these are good reads. Most of the folks I know have read this series and The Malloreon several times...they are sort of habit forming. If read for what they were written for, light books which should be enjoyed and ones to have fun with, then you will like them. If on the other hand you just graduated from Jr. High and are much, much too mature for them, then you should probably wait until you reach your dotage so that you can appreciate them again. Yes, they are flawed and yes there are endless contradictions (some 233 by my last count), but that is part of the charm of this work. Hey, go out to a oak tree in the woods or in your park, kick back, read and enjoy. Recommend highly.

Rainbow Six - book cover picture

Rainbow Six is the most action packed and exciting book Clancy has ever written. When I read Clear and Present Danger I didn't think Clancy could possibly write a book that good again, but he came extremely close with Rainbow Six. What makes Rainbow so great. First, it contain some of the greatest action sequences of the entire series. Second, we see John Clark enter a new role as an administrator and we see how he struggles with the change. Also, with this book coming so soon after Without Remorse we are startled and intrigued with the contrast between the young and old Clark. Third, we get to see Ding Chavez come into his own as a leader. Fourth, we are introduced to a group of new and intriging characters. Last, but not least, we are treated to one of the finest storylines Clancy has ever written.

The Octopus : A Story of California (Twentieth Century Classics) - book cover picture

A powerful, compelling book ... the image it repeatedly conveys is that of a fire breathing monster disrupting the rural innocence of the San Joaquin Valley. With a novelists eye, he charts the transition and disruption of early California agrarian society, the invasion of the locomotive, the Cyclops, the Leviathan, the Octopus. What a rich read! He also captures the spiritual dimension ... the greed, the lust for power, the primitive forces that drive people. My brother read this book in 10th grade and complained it was boring. So I never bothered. So I went off to Stanford University and put off reading this book until my 25th reunion. I have concluded that the book is probably modeled on Leland Stanford (there is an elderly railroad patriarch figure with a name similar to Stanford)which scares me a bit. Great school but I really hope this was not how he made his money. Every Californian, every Stanford grad, every lover of good literature should read this book.

Lest We Forget: The Passage from Africa to Slavery and Emancipation: A Three-Dimensional Interactive Book with Photographs and Documents from the Black Holocaust Exhibit - book cover picture

Ms. Thomas should be commended for bringing to life the days of the lives of people who were condenmed for being Black. I was also amazed about the research she acquired -- especially the 3D mementos. So many people have heard about these articles, but without attending a museum, have never seen them. Many other people have also heard about them, but don't take them serious, especially if it did not alter their lives in any way. For those of us who do take that time in history seriously, thank you, Ms. Thomas, for showing us and bringing us closer to what our ancestors endured.

Styron is underrated as a great American writer

Book title: Confessions of Nat Turner

Confessions of Nat Turner - book cover picture

The thing about Styron I admire is his astonishing talent for prose and description. I don't get the sense that he is much appreciated for his technical prowess, but he should be. If only critics will realize that great art is first brilliant craftsmanship, I think the quality of literature, in general, would be much higher. The things I liked about this book are the vivid descriptions of plantation and rural life (you could almost smell the soap on Margaret Whitehead's skin), the often hilarious speech, the shocking violence, and the staggering hypocrisy of the people of the American South with regards to chattel slavery. The biggest thing I did not like about this book (also with Sophie's Choice) is the clipped, elliptical narrative. It was often confusing to follow. I believe "The Confessions of Nat Turner" would have been a more powerful book if its storyline had been linear. But in the end, this is a great book. Much better than Sophie's Choice in my opinion.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia : The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse The Disease - book cover picture

I have tried EVERY "cure" possible for fibromyalgia. Herbs didn't help, Rx drugs/antidepressants didn't help, even removing mercury filling from my teeth didn't help. I have only experienced improvement on guaifenesin. It is not an easy journey, but certainly worth every step. I encourage you to read this book and check out the website for further information ( n).

Anne Perry lovers will like this

Book title: Murder on Astor Place (Gaslight Mysteries)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Murder on Astor Place (Gaslight Mysteries) - book cover picture

This is a new historical "amateur sleuth with a hook" book that has real potential as a series. If you read Anne Perry, this is the closest anyone has come to the antagonistic yet attracted relationship in the early Inspector Monk books that I've seen. It's set in turn-of-the-century New York and deals with a midwife and a police detective. The police of that time were horribly corrupt - it's just the way business was done - and our hero works within the rules of his world. The murder story was not as interesting as the glimpses into the society of the time, but the author gives you a well-rounded view of both the top and bottom segments of New York. If the author is able to maintain the detective's conflicted nature in future books, this could be a long-term winner for me.
