Not a moral monster

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Case Study in Critical Controversy - book cover picture

After reading Huck Finn at age eight, and then reading it again in English class at age fourteen, I found that, though this is a delightful book, it is not the moral monster it is made out to be by English teachers everywhere. I don't believe that it should be banned from libraries or schools, having read it at a young age with no particular evils coming from it, but I also don't believe that it is a book that should be scrutinized as it is now. I think that everyone will take away something different from this book, and that it should be discussed, but while reading this in class everyone came up with the "right" answers, not their own personal opinions and ideas.
An extension of Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn is a book that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

George Washington's War : Saga of the American Revolution, The - book cover picture

This book is excellent. Completely and totally excellent. The author's description of the political climate, the battles, and the men behind the Revolution are very, very well done. He gives a mood to the Revolution that few books do...an urgency that, even though you know how it ends, you find yourself unable to put the book down. It reads like a novel. One of the best points is the focus on the Southern Theater of the war, which is often neglected in other books. This is an excellent book for someone just starting to learn about the revolution, or someone who's immeresed themselves in the subject. Definitely 5 stars!

A 2003 Review

Book title: Trouncing the Dow: A Value-Based Method for Making Huge Profits in the Stock Market

Trouncing the Dow: A Value-Based Method for Making Huge Profits in the Stock Market - book cover picture

The 10 most undervalued stocks selected by benchmark investing (as taught in my book) from the S&P 100 averaged 51.20 percent in 2003 versus 23.84 percent for the index itself. The top five picks performed even better, up an average 80.82 percent. Obviously, 2003 was a good year for stocks. But had you used benchmark investing beginning in 2000 until the end of last year, and bought the 10 most undervalued stocks from the S&P 100 you would have enjoyed a compounded total average return of 8.71 percent. During the same period, the index lost an average of -7.69 percent a year. So, you might want to take a look at benchmark investing in this book. P.S. I do NOT have any web sites on the net, so don't assume I'm involved with any of them.

Nix better than Pullman?

Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy) - book cover picture

One of the best series that I have ever read was Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. But it still couldn't hold a candle to Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen series. Each one got better and better until it ended with the smash novel Abhorsen. When I picked up Sabriel I read until I was finished which took a mere 7 hours, which seemed like 7 minutes as the book was so amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who liked His Dark Materials, you will be astounded!

Interpreter of Maladies: Stories of Bengal, Boston and Beyond - book cover picture

A great read. Each story was surprising in its wisdom and poignant observations of the ordinary. This book took me into people's hearts that I had never thought of and made me feel for them. Every sentence had a purpose and was so well executed--no wonder it won a Pulitzer. A wonderful choice for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of other cultures and/or enjoys beautifully written prose.

Gottlieb's insights are presented in a manner that is rare.

The Boy Who Went Away - book cover picture

Gottlieb writes intimately lletting the reader in all the way. The book goes far deeper than a presentation of various components/people -- it provides a mirror for all who have grown up with a mother who unknowingly abuses the entire family in order to be comfortable with herself -- all under the guise of love. It's a healing experience if you refrain from focusing on the superficial--gottlieb puts the choice in the hands of the reader. The pain is sweet.

Vulnerable - book cover picture

The descriptive writing, the character development, the new twist on a classic theme are all surprising and rarely found in a first time novel. Amy Lane has crafted a universe of her own that is comfortingly familiar and yet new and unexplored. Each of the characters has their own voice, their own personality and yet they are inextricably woven together and dependent upon each other. The story line is great, and is so well written that it often reads like a movie script-you can see the action taking place in your head. The sex is beautiful, well described, but never gratuitous. The book would not be the same without it.
If you can overlook the poor editing (typos and such) you are in for a very good read.
The only question I have is, where is the sequel?????????

The Last Day - book cover picture

Enter only if you dare. Your survival kit should include: 1) An open mind 2) A sense of humor 3) Intelligence. This is not your typical suspense novel. There's a whole lot more to this story than I could imagine. As you get inexorably drawn into this inriguing plot, you will begin to see why this novel has become so controversial. That the religious right despises it should be enough of an endorsement for most intelligent readers, but even if you're not into the satirical elements, it's a hell of a thrilling read. Five stars.

The Red Tent : A Novel - book cover picture

A member of my book club introduced this book to me so it wasn't something I had chosen to read but I am so glad I did.

I really enjoyed The Red Tent. I found it to be very easy to read and hard to put down. Even my husband enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and the events that occurred were written with strong emotion. I found it fascinating to read something about the people of the time and speculate how they may have lived.

I also found it interesting to refer to the Bible once I had finished and see how closely she followed the story. Our book club had a lovely discussion about the book and the loss of the identity of men and women in modern times. I really enjoyed this book.

BCMSN: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks - book cover picture

I was pleased to have passed the BCMSN exam using only this book. Trying to pass cheaply, I only wanted to buy one book. I was not dissapointed. There are a few errors in the text; however, it was apparent those were typos. The CDROM included with the book is badly broken. Other have mentioned the RIP = Rest In Peace problem, that was a clue. I took the clue and started searching. www.osborne.com, under downloads, has the Errata and fix for the CDROM!The text explains all the networking basics and builds up from there. The configuration examples assumes you know the basics (i.e. have passed the CCNA or have related hands-on experience). The book was missing a section that defines all the icons and conventions used; however, a CCNA or cisco web site user will have no trouble.
