Book title: Annie John

Annie John - book cover picture

Annie John is about a daughter in the throes of conflict with her mother. She is finding out about mortality and sexuality and that her mother regards her as rival for her father's attention. When a group of high school students read this book in my class eight years ago, the boys in the back row all whined about reading "girl stuff." Presumedly they're older now and would have some interest in the struggles of their mothers, daughters, sisters, and lovers... not to mention themselves. After all, don't we all go through a period of gaining vision and resenting it simultaneously? I was caught with the opening scene, Annie John sees people dressed in black and some in white bobbing in the distance. What is it? she asks her mother, who tells her it must be the funeral of a child since such burials are always held in the morning. "Until then, I had not known that children could die."

Classic storytelling

Paladin of Souls - book cover picture

I'm thrilled to see Bujold branching out from her wildly successful space operas into another sub-genre. That takes a lot of courage, and it is always a temptation to keep writing the same story and characters over and over, knowing that paycheck will be a lot higher than trying something new. It's clear from this series that Bujold is not a "one-trick pony."

Not only a keeper, but buy two, one to read to death now, and one to replace it when the first one falls apart.

Careless Love : The Unmaking of Elvis Presley (Careless Love) - book cover picture

I was able to read "Carless Love" right after I read "Last Train to Memphis", and I have never read a biography that picks up to the second where the first one stops. Peter Guralnick vindicated Elvis for all of us. He gives us an honest look at the man without a whitewash or a smear campaign. I recomend this book to every single Elvis fan or musical scholar. Mr. Guralick, thank you for giving us the two definitive biographies of the most misunderstood singer in the 20th century.

The "Adventure Tale" portion of Churchill's life

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill, Visions of Glory - book cover picture

Before the cigar-chomping, top-hat-wearing portly gentleman hit the scene, there was a young man who nearly flunked out of school, chased war around the world, played polo, participated in the world's last meaningful cavalry charge, was a war correspondent, and escaped imprisonment as a POW in the Boar War. Churchill got around plenty before settling down in Parliament and "Visions of Glory" covers that portion of Churchill's life.

This book takes an exciting life and brings you into it. As good as biography gets.

Blue at the Mizzen - book cover picture

Aubrey and Maturin, Maturin and Aubrey - their lives and fortunes are as convoluted as the plot twists of the latest of Patrick O'Brien's chronicles. Picking up where The 100 Days left off, the pair cross the ocean, engage in middle-aged derring-do, and save the day for the twentieth time, with a spot of unexpected romance thrown in. As always the historical references are accurate; the minor failures of plot in this latest episode are easily overlooked. After all, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are men like no others in modern fiction; they fight, love, drink, indulge in excesses, mourn, spy, and get away with the loot better than anyone. They're a pair of upright Harry Flashmans, ready to rescue the damsel, make off with the gold, and free the oppressed colonials from their decadent rulers. Hornblower never had it this good.

The God of Small Things - book cover picture

I did not want to read this book, but luckily, I was required to. Roy's prose was so lyrical that I had to keep reading until the story itself would not let me stop. In the beginning, the rain is not just coming down, it is "slanting silver ropes slammed into the loose earth, plowing it up like gunfire." Roy's observations of people are so on target, that the reader will understand and know the characters immediately. The twists and turns and how things turn out will leave you thinking about this book for a long time.
