Not Just a Mystery - Its Literature

A Test of Wills - book cover picture

This novel is one of the most beautifully written mysteries I've ever read! I found the first page captivating. Furthermore, every word of the prologue appears to have been carefully selected to provide clues about the nature of the crime and direct us to the murderer. The main character is believable, interesting, and sympathetic. The reader is drawn into post-WWI England in a powerful way, pointing again to the soul destroying effects of war, and the deeper resentments of the human soul. The characters are relentlessly believable - even the one's who aren't really there!

The life of a child in a migrant family.

Book title: Working Cotton
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Working Cotton - book cover picture

A children's book based on a book of poems by Sherley Anne Williams that first appeared in the mid-1970s. It is about a migrant family (in this case, an African-American family) who are bused from one cotton field to another to pick cotton in which the children have to help. The book is really an indictment against child labor. It shows the hardships of this life, how important the "family" is, how tired and exhausted everyone (especially children) are at the end of the day, and how much children miss playing with other children. Reading the book with other children should lead to some fruitful discussions. It is beautifully written and illustrated. The illustrator was Carole Byard and the book was a 1993 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a book for children.

Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution - book cover picture

If you tend to believe that Darwinian theory is correct but still have questions about its implications for your religious belief, this book is for you. Miller has written a wonderful book. His answer to so-called "intelligent design theory" is the best I have read because Miller understands the temptation these ideas offer to anyone desiring to reconcile evolution and religion. But Miller effectively shows how design theory damages philosophy and religion by invoking design as an alternative to evolution. It does a disservice to God by depicting him as a magician who fumbles over and over trying to perform a trick. So how many different elephants did he have to create in order to finally get a good one? In the last chapter, Miller shows that if God represents truth and knowledge then every step we take to understand the natural universe as it actually exists is a step toward God.

Overall a great way to get your feet wet with MFC

Mfc Programming from the Ground Up - book cover picture

If you know C++ and some Windows basics (what a list box is, for example) and you want to learn about how to program with MFC, then this is the book for you.
It with a very easy to read style and has examples that actually compile the first time!
Don't expect the book to cover everything that you ever wanted to know about every MFC class, it would take volumes to cover it all. It DOES, however, cover the major controls and how to use them and it gives you a good base to go exploring the rest of the MFC world yourself.
I highly recommend this book if you know little or nothing about MFC programming and want an easy to read introduction

Men Are From Mars, Men Are From Venus

Gay Astrology : The Complete Relationship Guide for Gay Men - book cover picture

Overflowing with real-world details describing how each sign acts, this book puts the vagueness of other astrology books to shame. Much of Gay Astrology's delightfully edgey humor comes from its author's wry view of each sign's behavior in settings ranging from the bedroom to the gym to the boardroom to the laundromat. (The best part is "5-faces" where each sign is re-imagined as a Drag Queen, B&D Top, Guppy, Activist, and Gym Bunny. You have to read it to believe it.) In the second half of the book, author Yawney looks at how the signs act within couples using every possible combination. Most books do this these days, but none with the wit and insight this one does. Read this one and you will have fun, but you will learn something about yourself and others, too.

Fingerprints of the Gods : The Evidence of Earth's Lost Civilization - book cover picture

This book is the best book ever written, execpt for Hancock's The Sign and the Seal, and the Hiram Key: Pharohs, Freemasons, and the Discovery of the Secret Scrolls of Jesus. This book makes you think. It seems a little on the farfecthed side, but all author's aren't perfect. If you're interested in the revelation of hidden secrets, and ancient and lost civilzation, and if you arn't, read it! If you read the Sign and the Seal: The Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant, this book is a great sequel!

The New Food Lover's Tiptionary: More Than 6,000 Food and Drink Tips, Secrets, Shortcuts, and Other Things Cookbooks Never Tell You - book cover picture

Well, I got this book for my wife for her birthday, but I think I've referred to it as often as she has (we both like to cook). It has become indispensable for both of us because it always seems to have the answer to some cooking problem that, before, we would have muddled through on our own. There is so much information in this fat, friendly book that, so far, there hasn't been anything we needed to know that we couldn't find an answer to (now we know why our low-calorie muffins and biscuits always taste like hockey pucks--it is because there's no fat in them, and fat tenderizes baked goods.) My wife calls Sharon Tyler Herbst the "Dear Abby" of the kitchen and, as much as I hate to admit that she's right (again), I have to agree with her!

A lesson for all ages

Robinson Crusoe - book cover picture

Lost at sea and then condemned to an island to live out his life is not the only story being told in this classic novel. It is a tale of human reflection that allows the captive and the reader to escape the bondage of life that is dolled out to people from all times in history. It is an uplifting and religious revelation that any self-worth evangelist should read before they venture out on the television to convert lost souls.I found it to be borderline mystical with a brutal self analylization of humanity and what the problems that plague the commonest of men are, and offering a way to escape the island of our own creation of desertion.I highly recommend all ages to read or re-read this classic with a focus, not so much on the technical descriptions of how to survive the island, except maybe a CBS executive, but on the obvious message Defoe wanted to share with his fellow man.

Stop and smell the flowers...

Book title: Story of Ferdinand (Picture Puffin)
Rating: 5/5

Story of Ferdinand (Picture Puffin) - book cover picture

I like this book a lot. It's the story of a bull who would rather stop and smell the flowers than do anything else, unlike the other bulls who spend their time snorting and jumping around. When he accidentally sits on a bumblebee he jumps around like crazy and is taken away to a bullfight where instead of fighting he sits down and admires the flowers worn in the hair of the pretty ladies in the crowd. This book does mention sticking swords into the bulls, so that may be a little disturbing for younger kids. I think that slightly older kids who are like Ferdinand will enjoy this classic story and will be able to relate to his laid back personality.

Chronicle of the Roman Emperors: The Reign-By-Reign Record of the Rulers of Imperial Rome (Chronical Series) - book cover picture

This is the best, single history of the Roman emperors that I have come across. It used to seem to me that they were disembodied names, unrelated to events and time. This work puts the emperors in the context of their times and shows how they succeeded one another and how the social fabric of the empire evolved and disintegrated. The portrait busts add a level of humanity to what would otherwise be a dry and dusty name list. But for the grace of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, there go we.....
