Nostromo (Essential.penguin S.) - book cover picture

Like all of Conrad's works, Nostromo contains a well structured plot, strong well defined characters and a message. No question that Conrad can be as verbose as Henry James but, unlike James, Conrad has something intersting to say. Nostromo is a man of the people who is used by the European aristocracy that rule a South American 'banana republic' to do their dirty work. Nostromo eventually is corrupted by the demands and is eventually undone by it.Most critics beleive that Nostromo is Conrad's best work.

Perfect for Beginning Programmers

KornShell Programming Tutorial (Hewlett-Packard Press Series) - book cover picture

This book contains hundreds of examples. I ran every one of them, and they work just as well on Linux Kornshell as they do on an AIX Kornshell, with very few exceptions. I have gone from knowing literally no Kornshell/Unix scripting to now being able to script almost anything I need to do. The content of the book is written on a level that anyone can understand, and the author's writing style is never boring. It is laid out in a manner that makes it easy to look up anything later. A "Must Have" for anyone wanting to learn Kornshell.

The best of Fuhrman's books...

Murder in Greenwich: Who Killed Martha Moxley? - book cover picture

I loved this book. I found Fuhrman to be quite a competent writer as well as a superb detective. The story was fascinating and I found my jaw dropping on more than one occasion. I was shocked and surprised to find out some of the information revealed in this book. The link to the Kennedy family is just amazing. As someone who gets bored easily, this book was fast reading for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys true crime or just a plain good mystery.

A great book for someone living with a shy person

The Hidden Face of Shyness - book cover picture

I found this book extremely informative, expecially for someone living with a shy person. By reviewing all of the possible causes of anxiety, the authors helped me to realize that there are "explanations" for this problem. As a result, we should not hold the shy person fully responsible for having this condition. Nonetheless, as the authors point out, there is certainly room for improvement!

A View from the Ridge: The Testimony of a Twentieth-Century Christian - book cover picture

Morris West has written a truly challenging testimony as he nears the end of a fine career and eventful life. For me, he summed up how I feel as a Catholic facing the challenges of the Church at the end of the millenium. His candidness and honesty are refreshing. His ideas worth consideration. And his words often inspiring. I am grateful he took the time to tell me so intimately about his own faith journey

The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 1) - book cover picture

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket is miserable, sad, depressing, and of course unfortunate. It tells the sad story of Violt, Kause, and Sunny Baudelaire. However, for such a sad tale it is good!
The story opens on Briny Beach where the children were spending the day. They receive the terrible news about their parents perishing in a fire that burned down their mansion. As if that isn't enough, they have to go live with an evil man who tries to steal their fortune. Lemony Snicket is a marvelous writer. Anyone who enjoys Harry Potter books would like this book.

American Prophecies - A real awakening to the end times

Book title: The American Prophecies: Ancient Scriptures Reveal Our Nation's Future

The American Prophecies: Ancient Scriptures Reveal Our Nation's Future - book cover picture

This book is humbling in it scope. The author begins in the time of our governing fathers - who were not afraid to build the country on Christian principles and embrace the Jews as God's chosen people. It covers entirely how America is leading to its own demise by trying to appease Islamic Fundamentalism while subsidizing it through excessive need for petroleum products. Even liberals who might bash this book as being too Biblical would have to admit that long-term renewable energy sources need to be implemented so as to avoid our economic downfall at the hands of the Middle East.
I am appreciative of Mike Evan's courage in standing up to Yasser Arafat in public, and by exposing the lies of both radical Islamic ideals and liberal indifference to maintaining american values.

My favorite books of all time

Book title: Half Magic
Rating: 5/5

Half Magic - book cover picture

I discovered Edward Eager's books when I was about 7 and fell in love with them. My first quest was to find and read all of his books (unfortunately there are only seven). My second quest, which took me 15 years, was to OWN all of these books. Like the reader above, I have found few people of my age who have read these marvelous books, of which "Half Magic" is the first and which introduces the reader to characters who appear in the other books.
What I liked most about Eager's books were the plays on words (time garden/thyme garden) and the overlapping (a secret in one book is revealed in another book). The children in the books love to read and are always "ordinary" children who happen upon magic. I admit I'm still on the lookout for talking toads, wish-granting turtles, and talismans that look like nickels but aren't.

READ THESE BOOKS. Then follow the threads to the other books (Ivanhoe, A Connecticut Yankee) that Eager introduces you to.
