Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

The sheer size of this book amazed me, but in spite of the large number of pages, there's hardly one that is not important to the story or just plain interesting. When I thought one chapter couldn't be topped, I was proved wrong. Except for some parts (very few!) everything just flowed. We find out more about old friends and acquaintances, meet yet *another* D.A.D.A teacher, and as ever, there are some surprise developments -- not always happy ones though. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is definitely a must-read. The Harry Potter story has just gotten much more intense. The young characters are growing up and things are going to be harder for everyone. Now the wait for Book 5 -- which seems to promise a reunion of "the old crowd", as Dumbledore calls them, so it looks like another of my favorite characters is returning! Yes!

I'm not usually moved by books but....

Book title: The Cross : Kristin Lavransdatter, Vol. 3 (Vintage)

The Cross : Kristin Lavransdatter, Vol. 3 (Vintage) - book cover picture

...this one brought me to tears in more than one place. If you're reading "The Cross," or considering purchasing it, you've probably already read the first two books in the series and are caught up in the story. Is this book worth it? Yes. It's not an uplifting read by any means, but it brings the Kristin story to a logical -- though heartbreaking -- conclusion. I am in awe of Undset for her creation of such believable characters, and grateful to her for this glimpse into medieval life. Nunnally's translation is clear and reads smoothly. This, along with "The Wreath" and "The Wife," is one of those books you hate to see end.

Stay Alive All Your Life - book cover picture

Having just read a 1957 copy of this book, it is absolutely amazing how much American life back then is still so applicable today. Dr. Peale's words of wisdom are skillfully set out by experience and example, personal and otherwise. Many of the characters identified in the book are still living. Dr. Peale candidly offers healthy, inspirational and spiritual techniques to heal the wounds of everyday living with class and resolve leaving the reader to truly feel that life is not a problem, but rather that life is a solution.

Quantum Leap: Mirror's Edge (Quantum Leap) - book cover picture

Wow. This book is amazing. I don't know about you, but I usually get right into a book, and this one was no exception. I have been a Quantum Leap fan since I was 11, and I'm 22 now. For 11 years this series has drawn me in, and the books only make it better. This one in paticular brings you deep into the mind of Sam Beckett, and the struggle he has had to endure for the last 5 years. I won't give away the story, but this book will teach you more about Sam, Al, Donna, and even Ziggy than you ever thought you knew!!

How can anyone not see the genius of this novel?

Wuthering Heights - book cover picture

I would never have read this brilliant, fascinating, and whirlwind novel had it not been for my English teacher. I can't believe what I would have missed out on! The narrative is not at all confusing - it's simply 1st person limited. The frame narration is wonderful, it adds to the mystique and ambiguity that surrounds the whole situation. Heathcliff inexorably attracts and repels as does Catherine. It's one long huge piece of poetic prose. It disturbs, it frightens, it causes one to look at a darker side in a new light. The book is amazing, Emily Bronte was a woman way beyond her times. I would reccomend this book to everyone - even those annoyed with the characters etc simply cannot argue with the mastery of the book.

It goes without saying that Harry Bosch is one of the most interesting characters to come along in a long time. Just when you think maybe you have a handle on him-surprise.
I particularly liked this book because of the psychological aspect,we see more of who Harry is and what drives him.
Of course, it goes without saying that the story is never dull or plodding. From the first discovery if never stops-you can't quit reading it.

The Sears Catalogue & Episcopalian Religon did exist in 1895

Under the Dragon's Tail - book cover picture

Maureen Jennings was the recipient of the Heritage Toronto Certificate for Fiction in 1998 for her first novel Except The Dying. Her research and its accuracy are impeccable as she in fact owns an original copy of the Sears catalogue 1895, Canadaian edition. I have laid my eyes on it. As for the Episcopalian Church, it did indeed exist in Toronto during the late 1800's. Not only is Ms. Jennings detail of historic fact completely accurate, but her novels wonderfully bring to life a time that has never been covered in the Canadian Crime Fiction scene. So much so that her books have recently been sold to a Toronto telvision producer. Kudos to Ms. Jennings and her fans look forward to the next installment of William Murdoch's adventures.

I just read some negative reviews online about this book. I am participating in the 40 days Bible study and I think this book is terrific. My husband, who is not familiar with most Bible stories, is totally absorbed with this book. We discuss readings daily! I find myself reflecting on the lessons throughout the day. Bravo for writing a book that helps each one of us discover why we are here!

Ticket to the Opera : Discovering and Exploring 100 Famous Works, History, Lore, and Singers, with Recommended Recordings - book cover picture

This book, by Phil Goulding, is a great book for opera ameatuers and buffs alike. The author chose 100 of the greatest operas today, some well known and some not, and organized them into an easy to follow guide. The intresting facts about the singers, composers, and others are really interesting. The greatest part of the book are the recommended recordings and videos of each of the operas. They are a perfect way to introduce yourself to the operas and the performers, and also to begin a great opera collection. I recently purchased the book, and have begun to purchase the CDs and videos in the book. The author also gives you a guide to many famous singers, from Luciano Pavarotti, to Maria Callas, to Nicolai Ghiaurov (who died on June 2, 2004). This book is a great companion for all opera lovers, espically those who want to build up a collection of CDs and videos.
