Never mind Kirkus Reviews--here's a five star author!

Divided Highways : Building the Interstate Highways, Transforming American Life - book cover picture

I would like to note that while Kirkus Reviews claims "Lewis is not always careful with his facts (e.g., the first enclosed shopping mall was built in 1956, not in 1947...)," they themselves begin their review with a blatant falsehood: "Similar to his Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio, Lewis has written a tie-in to a PBS documentary." Neither Empire of the Air nor Divided Highways are "tie-in" books. The films are based on the books, not vice-versa, and Kirkus Reviews should know better. Interestingly enough, the first enclosed shopping mall was actually built in 1947, as Lewis wrote. Two strikes for Kirkus! Buy this book!

Asterix and Obelix All At Sea 35 (Classic Asterix Hardbacks) - book cover picture

I have heard many bad things about this one, but as an avid fan of Asterix and other works of Uderzo (Iznogud, Umpah Pah, ...), I think this is a great story. The art work is superb, Uderzo certainly gets better with each story. The plot is funny, and Spartakis is great! I have some problems with it though, the adventure seems too much for 48 pages. Seems like at times, Uderzo has had to leave the adventure without getting it anywhere. Spartakis and his band could have been given a greater role than just the cab ride from the Armorian Coast to Atlantis!

The Era: 1947-1957, When the Yankees, the Giants, and the Dodgers Ruled the World - book cover picture

Roger Kahn has once again pulled a fresh reading of what could've been a nostalgic mess from a less skilled writer's pen. "The Era 1947-1957: When the Yankees, the Giants, and the Dodgers Ruled the World" is able to tread that fine line between admiration and hagliography, and presents us with an engaging history of the decade during which New York's baseball teams (yes, Brooklyn is technically part of New York City) dominated first place in their leagues. Many of the anecdotes tread familiar paths, but it's worth hearing them again in Kahn's distinct voice. There are some funny, some grim stories that are not so well known. Unlike most baseball books, this one doesn't bog the reader down with buckets of stats which are usually included so that the author can impress you. Kahn is on a different level. Keep this book alongside your copy of "Boys of Summer" for a complete view of New York's baseball dominance during this era.

Excellent Book for Young Readers

If You Lived At The Time Of The Civil War (If You.) - book cover picture

I highly recommend this book for young readers who are first learning about the Civil War, and for parents/adults who want to refresh their knowledge about the Civil War. It uses an easy-to-follow Question/Answer approach. It explains which states seceded, who fought for the northern and southern armies, how the war affected the daily lives of northerners and southerners, who were the famous people from the north, and who were the famous people from the south. I really like the approach of the entire "If You" Series by Scholastic for introducing history to young readers. I highly recommend it for classrooms, home schooling, or pleasure.

Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything - book cover picture

With this type of thinking, Levitt and Dubner might be the best candidates to embark on the next search for the Holy Grail, they might find it. The "Freakonomics" dichotomy on everything from the Ku Klux Klan to the legalization of abortion is amazing. I have yet to read a book that compelled me to begin to reconsider my position on so many issues. The authors completed their research on their topics and presented provocative, yet sound arguments on some of the issues facing our society today. This sort of social commentary is a breath of fresh air.

Sick and twisted

Book title: Seven & 8Mm

Seven & 8Mm - book cover picture

Andrew Kevin Walker has the ability to weave a good, mysterious storyline around the atrocities that are seen every day in the newspaper or on TV. In "Seven" the story centers around a serial killer murdering in a mosaic around the seven deadly sins and in "8MM" a private detective is on the case of a missing runaway involved in the porn/snuff film industry. Walker creates dark and bleak situations and screen villains that are menacing and actually frightening. The protagonistic struggles laid into the story, involving personal choices and morals, are always juicy. Walker's next project, Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow", is supposed to be one of the scariest movies of the decade. From Walker, I would expect it.

Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life - book cover picture

I like this g reat book by Blanchard. It deals with change, the changes that started right around 1993 and escalated after that. Downsizing is amajor problem and u nfortunately, many people don't know how to handle it.I have heard of people who have lost their houses, their families and in some cases, their lives because they didn't know how to handle change. This book helps to deal with that. I also found an interesting website that corresponds and/or helps people deal with change. The website is k you Mr. Johnson and Mr. Blanchard. Great book.

A magical, thought-provoking journey

The Stone Raft - book cover picture

Like the Iberian peninsula of the title, the reader is swept along on an enchanting, mysterious voyage. Saramago's writing (unconventional in that it forgoes most punctuation) is never obtuse, always engrossing and often quite funny. Like all great writers --in my opinion -- he never sacrifices story while at the same time expressing his ideas. What could have easily been a polemic is instead a rich, lovely book. If you've never read Saramago, this is an ideal book with which to start.

A Creative Approach to Music Fundamentals (with CD-ROM) - book cover picture

I hope that no one was scared away by my use of the word theory. Most people seem to fear and laothe music theory but this book offers a simple and easy way to learn the basic elements of theory. William Duckworth has explained everything with the utmost concern for the reader's comprehension of the material. Useful excercises are provided after each lesson. This book is structured like a textbook but it is also a useful learning tool for someone with mere interest.

I was so impressed by the author J. California Cooper. My sister turned me on to this literary wonder. I have read all of her books because I can't get enough of her writing, I suggest them all, even the short stories as must-reads. I was so moved and yet surprised that she's not one of our more popular writers. I have a good feeling about her. I want to give this book 6 stars, it's worth it. Happy Reading!
