You know how most travel book reviews start with, "I've never been to <insert place name here>, but this book makes me want to see it in person"??

Many people might not say that about this book of Dave Barry's-but it will make you want to go and experience all the good things, all the funny things, and yes even the bad things (as few as they are, according to Dave) for yourself!!
It sure makes me want to visit Japan-and wear a kimono, stay in the tranquil Japanese Inn, or learn-at least try to-Japanese in five minutes!!
This is the book to take along with you on the trip to Japan-Dave makes you look at things a little different, and you'll never be the ugly toursit anymore-not with a Dave Barry Does Japan book in your hands!

The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book) - book cover picture

I read this for my book club and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a creative (but not too far-reaching) story that combines the tenderness of love and the brutality of living in a very realistic way. The characters came to life for me. I thought the author did an amazing job writing all the different time traveling events in a way that I could keep up with. I liked the clever way she gave snippets of the characters'lives - I got a very full picture of what life was like for Clare and Henry in concise snippets of times throughout their lives. Well done. I hope she publishes more fiction novels.

The most important threat in all of human history

High Tide : The Truth About Our Climate Crisis - book cover picture

At last a book that gets beyond the scientific jargon, and focuses on the initial victims of climate change around the world: from Tuvaluans having to vacate their sinking island paradise and way of life, to the demise of glaciers that supply water for a huge portion of the world's population, to super cyclones wreaking havoc, to baking and sinking Alaska, to agricultural lands in China turning into a desert dust bowl, and so on. And if, as naysayers might claim, all this isn't caused by anthropogenic global warming, then we can only expect much worse in the future, a future that may entail mass extinctions from runaway global warming, once nature, having warmed to certain levels by human activity, starts releasing its tremendous amount of stored greenhouse gases. This should motivate everyone to turn off that light not in use, and reduce their greenhouse gases.

Classic western for children and adults

Book title: Shane

Shane - book cover picture

I suspect only an American could have written this book. And
not because it's a Western. It's the style--clean, sparse, simple, without a wasted word. It reminds me somewhat of Hemingway. Although I don't like to use the word, I have to call
this novel a classic (when anyone says the word, "Shane," doesn't everyone know what that means?) Most everyone would enjoy it, whether they're children or adults. It's short enough to be read in one sitting. There's no need to go into the plot; all the rest of the reviews have done that. All I'll say is that I recommend it, and I think nearly everyone will enjoy it.

A Clockwork Book

A Clockwork Orange - book cover picture

Brilliance. Burgess' text will grasp you from the very beginning, from when Alex starts his mystery tour to when he drops you off at the end.You feel attached to the text instantly as Alex and his gang start on their evenings work. Great start to the book, which you can, and will, read over and over again. The slight drop in standard for me was during the third section. Although it is almost compulsory to be there, it seems to drag out slightly. It is nauseous - yet interesting - to know that he gets treated in a rough way, as he may have treated somebody else. Towards the end, somehow the disgust I feel for Alex during the opening chapters, turns to pity through sorrow.A Clockwork Orange has the best ending I have read, to top off the finest book I have ever read.A stunning and original use of languages and an enthralling structure, which describes and educates an extremely a morbid subject.

I was blown away by the excitement and thrills that kept you wanting to turn the page over and over. Tolkien creates a world where you are actually there, amongst the magical creatures that are created with it, his descriptiveness and word use is the best I have read yet. The plot keeps you "on the edge of your seat" and is filled with wonderment. I strongly reccomend this book to all who havent read it yet, it is a must.

The Book Of A Life Time

Holes (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

Holes by Louis Sachar a story of a young boy who gets sent to a camp and is forced to dig holes each day because of a crime he was accused of is a very interesting an mind-filling story. I would definitely recommend this book to many people young and old. This book would be great to fit into schools for students can actually read something interesting and up to date. Holes is a very inspiring story. It even encouraged me to go out and dig holes, that part I don't recommend. Holes demonstrates a good friendship between two friends and how easy it is to get into trouble. I strongly recommend this great book to be read by many.

Plan B Delivers!

Plan B - book cover picture

This book has a great plot device, involving the kidnapping of a movie star by his friends, and the story is moved along by truly witty dialogue between those friends as they deal with all of their fears and worries at turning thirty. Being thirty-two, I related to all of the angst that Ben, the narrator was going through, and the interplay between the friends really reminded me of my own friends.Tropper has a great ear for dialogue, and a fun, unpretentious style that makes you feel like you're listening to a friend of yours tell you a story. I also echo the sentiment of many of the reviews below, that this book would make a great movie for the Matt Damon/ Ben Affleck set. I look forward to that possibility, as well as more books from Mr. Tropper.
